A new caffeinated gum may have gone too far.The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that it will investigate the safety of added caffeine and its effects on children and adolescents. The agency made the announcement just as Wrigley was rolling out Alert Energy Gum, a new product that includes as much caffeine as a half a cup of coffee in one piece and promises "the right energy, right now."Michael Taylor, FDA's deputy commissioner of foods, indicated that the proliferation of new foods with caffeine added -- especially the gum, which he equates to "four cups of coffee in your pocket" -- may even prompt the FDA to look closer at the way all food ingredients are regulated. The agency is already investigating the safety of energy drinks and energy shots, prompted by consumer reports of illness and death.Taylor said Monday that the only time FDA explicitly approved the added use of caffeine in a food or drink was in the 1950s for colas. The current proliferation of caffeine added to foods is "beyond anything FDA envisioned," Taylor said."It is disturbing," Taylor told The Associated Press. "We're concerned about whether they have been adequately evaluated."Caffeine has the regulatory classification of "generally recognized as safe," or GRAS, which means manufacturers can add it to products and then determine on their own whether th ised Watt as a first-rate selection. Both were classmates at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bowles, the Democrat in a debt-tackling partnership with former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming, said Watt brings "a bright mind, great work habits and an understanding of how Washington works to the job."Hugh McColl, former Bank of America chairman and CEO, also welcomed Watt's nomination. McColl said he has known Watt for four decades, first meeting him through his brother-in-law, former Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., who attended Yale Law School at the same time as Watt."What he brings to everything, doesn't matter the subject, is an open mind," McColl said. "He has clarity of thought."Charlotte is a major banking center, and the top donors to Watt's political campaigns over the years have been bank political action committees and bank officials and employees. His nomination comes nearly a year after DeMarco, who has been acting director, stood by a decision to bar Fannie and Freddie from reducing principal for borrowers at risk of foreclosure, resisting pressure from the administration. DeMarco long has opposed allowing the mortgage giants to offer principal reduction. In March, attorneys general from nine states, led by Democrats Eric Schneiderman of New York and Martha Coakley of Massachusetts, sent Obama a letter saying that Fannie and Freddie under DeMarco have been a "direct impediment to our economic recovery." ------=Part.625.7631.1389040154 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii

CAIRO Egypt's state news agency says a hard-line Islamist preacher has been arrested for slandering a famous actress by accusing her of "practicing prostitution."In December, Abdullah Badr was sentenced to a year in prison and fined for his remarks about Elham Chahine on el-Hafiz TV, which is associated with the ultraconservative Salafi movement.MENA says his appeal was rejected earlier this week and police arrested him Wednesday in the Delta Sharqia province after he failed to turn himself in.Chahine sued Badr after he accused her on his show of "practicing prostitution" and teaching Egyptian women how to "be immoral and commit adultery." His remarks came after she criticized radical Islamists for their view of the arts.Chahine's lawyer complained the actress had been exposed to "insults, cursing and humiliation." HARARE, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe's official media says the nation's generals and police commanders won't meet with the prime minister and other "malcontents" trying to undermine their powers. The state-owned Herald newspaper, controlled by President Robert Mugabe's party, reported Wednesday the country's police chief warned critics of the army and police that they risked being arrested if they continued demanding reforms in the security forces and "peddling lies" on the role of the armed services ahead of crucial elections later this year.Security chiefs "will neither meet or engage" with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the paper quoted police chief Augustine Chihuri saying.Zimbabwe's security chiefs "have no business talking to individuals of no substance," Chihuri said.Tsvangirai's party has called for an overhaul of the police and military blamed for openly supporting Mugabe.
