[smile] So when DD was asked to audition for the team, I asked lots of stupid questions from the more experienced moms and a few mentioned that DD would probably compete in a different section because it would be her first year competing. From what I have been able to read here, as well as on the websites for the various competitions, I assume they meant the "novice" category. The thing is, yes this is going to be DDs very first season competing, BUT she has been dancing for a long time (since she was 3, she just turned 13). Now, she did classical ballet until last semester when we moved to this studio, so she is "behind" on all the tricks etc (never did gymnastics or anything like that). So "novice" hardly seems appropriate... I don't care about the trophy or anything, but for her self esteem, it sure would be a bonus if she had even a remote chance of placing. She's a lovely dancer, but this style of dancing is new to her and although she has performed before (in ballet productions) she has never competed and certainly never had a solo part in anything before.. I don't want to put her up against amazing 13yo comp kids who have done this since they were 3, lol I'm sure DT will let us know later on, and I will certainly ask her when I get a chance, I just wanted to see what the consensus is here... Would you compete someone with adequate dance training but ZERO comp experience as a novice? Thanks for all input That said, novice categories at the comps we went to always had very few entries, sometimes from only 1 or 2 of the 15-20+ studios in attendance. And when they were performing, they were mixed in w/the other competitors, no separate time or room w/separate judging. I can't say that they were ever at the bottom of the barrel, talent wise. Which really just made it harder to justify why it was necessary imo... if it wasn't for the increased chance at winning.
