MARTIN FONER'S PUBLISHING NEWSLETTER
Either You're Serious About Success in Publishing... Or You're Not
A 'PUBLISHERS FOR SALE' ISSUE
Hello, Everyone...
A regular newsletter of important and interesting information for publ=
ishers is coming at the end of the week.
Meanwhile, publishers are going quickly not only in my universe, but i=
f you get other more general newsletters, you will see some non-profit=
'names' and some mid-sized companies on the block and sold.
So, I decided another "For Sale" issue would be appropriate.
As well, with only 90 days left in the year, any year end acquisitions=
need to be started NOW.
If you have an interest in buying but you don't see what you are looki=
ng for here, let me know... I have 4 or 5 new Sellers who aren't quite=
ready yet to be in the marketplace, and more every month.
If you have an interest in selling, contact me confidentially to deter=
mine a ballpark value for your company, and we can start the process.
Contact me on the above or the below: mfoner@nplconsult.com mailto:mfo=
ner@nplconsult.com .
Martin
1.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Midwest US Monthly Regional Magazine... With a re=
ligious bend but not overly deep... more community than overtly religi=
ous. In business over 20 years and very profitable. Advertising revenu=
es of $200,000... Nets $80K+... Asking $200,000. Excellent opportunity=
to branch out for a religious publisher, a Midwest publisher, newspap=
er, or newsletter company, or anyone wanting to create a strong net pr=
ofit stream from a minimal investment.
2.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Mid Sized Non-Fiction focused in Business, Self-I=
mprovement, Health & Wellness... Very strong front and back list, over=
450 titles, and strong pipeline for new titles... over 75 in the pipe=
, and 35 more in negotiation/development. Ten year old company... grow=
th every year, profits growing. 2017 will do over $600K and net $300K.=
Asking $1,450,000... but will wait til 3Q figures out to confirm and =
sell. Could be done in $1.2 - $1.3MM zone if quick and cash. Seller wi=
ll finance up to 1/3 of price for three years max. In Calif, but can r=
elocate anywhere. Minimal staff, all freelance, minimal inventory, mos=
tly digital and rest is primarily POD. A one person management operati=
on.
3.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Civil War Information Records Books. And what a t=
reasure trove this is. The publisher was finally able to give me a rea=
sonably clean count of the total number of titles, records of families=
, battles, chronologies, you name it. So far we are up to about 1,500+=
titles. Most digital and a few physical. This is an opportunity to ad=
d to your Civil War line and to create/market over 1,500 eBooks if tha=
t is your thing. Or, create and market over 1,500 physical. Bonus one =
is there are roughly 300 titles waiting to be 'produced' by primary au=
thor, putting this deal at over 1,800 titles! Revenues are around $30K=
, net around $25K. Inventory is close to $70K. Asking on this one incl=
udes the value of having over 1,500 titles in Civil War information an=
d the potential inherent in physical and eBooks... Asking $249,000.
4.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Primarily Travel Guide Books... I have a 25 year =
old small publisher specializing in travel guide books... US, Europe, =
everywhere... about 40 titles... (And there are a dozen books in other=
areas that can be included or separated, see #5 and #6.) The whole co=
mpany could go in the $100K range... if you move quickly. Or, just pur=
chase the travel related books for about $75,000 clean.
5.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Genealogy Books... From the company above, 8-10 t=
itles current. Pricing would be in the $25,000 range.
6.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Career Search Books... From the company above, 4 =
titles in job search. Pricing would be in the $15,000 range.
7.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Media Planning... university texts and field guid=
es, in biz for 20+ years... strong repeat sales by edition. Net for on=
e man show is historically $43K... now up in 2016 and 2017 to mid $50'=
s. Three titles, basic inventory, long customer list... asking $195,00=
0.
8.=C2=A0 =C2=A08. Green Construction... text and field book for 'green=
' construction, very current, 2016 Copyright. Publisher can't seem to =
gain traction and needs a new home where it will fit the line of the p=
ublisher better. Inventory of roughly 3,500 units and rights to title,=
asking $10,000.
9.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Gambling Publisher, dormant... Not active for a w=
hile, owns seven titles plus distributed about 25 titles. Inventory, w=
hich is old, is main asset, is over $50,000 at print or discounted dis=
tributor cost. Also about 15,000 copies of a gambling newsletter, and =
a few domain names. Asking $19,000., negotiable.
10.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Romanc=
e/Erotic Fiction Publisher, almost dormant... Still doing some busines=
s... expected to close up at end of 2016 and returned rights to many t=
itles but still holds rights to dozens of titles, plus domain names, s=
o doing small biz in 2017. Even not promoting, expected 2017 revenues =
at $7,500 and net at $5,000. Some physical inventory, about $3K, but a=
ll have been done as eBooks. Some future title commitments and some bo=
oks could be resurrected. Asking $24,000., negotiable.
11.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Classi=
cs Books... 47 year-old publisher of classics in philosophy and metaph=
ysics. Its portfolio is about a dozen titles by Kant, Descartes, Hobbs=
, etc. These are titles=C2=A0not offered by any other publisher and ar=
e unique scholarly volumes with a facsimile of the original (Latin, Ge=
rman, etc.) verso and an authoritative English translation-of-that-pag=
e recto. Asking $95,000, but somewhat negotiable.
12.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Art Re=
ference Books... 47 year-old scholarly art reference book publisher wi=
th a list of over 200 art reference books and multi-volume sets in pri=
nt with a standing order customer list upwards of 300, and a mailing l=
ist of 1,000 buyers. They have the authoritative, definitive, 110 titl=
e (so far), reference and pictorial encyclopedia of European master ar=
tists. Asking $299,000 based on $70K average net. Inventory of $500K a=
t cost will be sold separately from this deal, but could be purchased =
for $150K cash, or 5 years of payments at $40K.
13.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Small =
educational publisher. I have a small educational publisher who specia=
lizes in remedial at high school reading and math for sale. I have men=
tioned the company before and they are willing to sell the whole small=
company at once or sell off their titles individually. The owners wan=
t to retire now, and are not really interested in a long term buy out.=
Just to retire. For the whole company, asking $55,000. They are willi=
ng to sell off individual titles, so request a list of them.
14.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Disast=
er Prevention & Recovery Directory, Dormant. I have a professional dir=
ectory that was active for roughly 20 years, with a premier name in th=
e field that has gone dormant for the last four. When it was last acti=
ve, it was sold, and the new owner simply didn't have the time and ene=
rgy to look after it and let it go dormant. There won't be much in the=
way of records or back up... but again, the price, which has been a d=
iscussion, would be primarily for the goodwill of the name, about 15,0=
00 listings in the directory, a very short buyer list, advertiser list=
, and other files. Asking is $9,500 on closing and 10% of revenues for=
two years.
15.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Nine B=
ook Series Very Similar to Harry Potter. I have a very fascinating ser=
ies of books... very, very much in the format and writing and style of=
Harry Potter, except written to a higher level, well-illustrated, and=
really a more teen/adult version based on reading level. This was wri=
tten in three trilogies... nine books total. Many are now in print, se=
lf-pub, and a few are in production phase, ready to print. The author =
is asking $45,000 for all including all current inventory of those alr=
eady in print... plus a downline royalty.
16.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Myster=
y & Thriller Books, mostly. I also have an interesting company, in bus=
iness for a few years, with almost 150 titles, many in thriller, myste=
ry, some western, and a smattering of non-fiction. Most are in ebook f=
ormat and some are dual, ebook and physical. Sales are increasing towa=
rd 100K. Profits are, obviously, strong on this but this company's pri=
mary interest is in selecting books for filmmaking, as they option and=
make the films. They are happy to consider an arrangement where they =
keep bringing titles to the new owner as long as they can work the fil=
m rights. They are asking roughly $295,000 plus a downline percentage/=
royalty to be determined.
17.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Art In=
struction-Individual Title for those who want to draw/paint but have n=
o formal training. Book has decent history and author is willing to up=
date if needed. Asking $5,000 plus downline royalties.
18.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 True M=
emoir of Hiding in Berlin During WWII-Individual Title interesting tru=
e story of a Jew who has to survive the war stuck in Berlin... current=
ly being put out for movie rights... and it might just make it. Asking=
$5,000 plus downline royalties, no film rights.
Well, for the moment, this is the list.
