Blake Bortles benched for bad ballgame

The Jacksonville Jaguars have spent the past few years as one of the NFL=E2=
=80=99s great =E2=80=9Cyeah, but=E2=80=A6=E2=80=9D teams, as in =E2=80=9Cye=
ah, they=E2=80=99re great, but they=E2=80=99ve got Blake Bortles at quarter=
back. =E2=80=9D As of Sunday, that=E2=80=99s not the case.=20

Following Bortles=E2=80=99 second fumble of the game against Houston, a mis=
cue that gave the Texans an easy touchdown for a 20-0 lead, the Jaguars ben=
ched Bortles and brought in backup Cody Kessler.  Bortles had completed six=
 of 12 passes for 61 yards and, obviously, no touchdowns.  On the year, Bor=
tles has nine touchdowns, eight interceptions and five fumbles as the Jagua=
rs have struggled.  Kessler finished 21 of 30 for 156 yards with one touchd=
own and an interception in a 20-7 loss that dropped Jacksonville to 3-4.=20

After the game, which ended up a 20-7 Jags loss, Jacksonville coach Doug Ma=
rrone offered up his thoughts on why he benched Bortles: =E2=80=9CThought p=
rocess was you can take all 11 out, [but then] you don=E2=80=99t have enou=
gh people to put in.  Thought process: =E2=80=98Hey listen, I=E2=80=99m goi=
ng to take the quarterback out. =E2=80=99 Not like he had he played worse a=
nyone out there.  He had two fumbles.  I just literally did it to try and g=
et a damn spark from this football team to put everyone on notice.  They ha=
ve to focus and go out there and play better.  At points in second half the=
y did it.  That=E2=80=99s not fair to the QB, but that=E2=80=99s how the bu=
siness is. =E2=80=9D

Bortles, for his part, said he had =E2=80=9Cno idea=E2=80=9D if he=E2=80=99=
d be starting next week.  =E2=80=9CI=E2=80=99ll do the same thing I=E2=80=
=99ve always done =E2=80=94 show up, work, prepare and get ready to go and =
work as hard as I can,=E2=80=9D Bortles said after the game.  =E2=80=9CIf I=
 play, I play.  If not, then I=E2=80=99ll do whatever I can to help this te=
am. =E2=80=9D

The Jaguars have gone from Super Bowl hopeful to afterthought, and Bortles =
has been a significant reason for the decline.  It=E2=80=99ll be fascinatin=
g to see if this team gets its swagger back with Bortles on the sideline.=
