CNN president tells Trump 'words matter' after suspected mail bomb found

=9D wasn=E2=80=99t faking its outrage Wednesday over what appeared to be an=
 attempted pipe bomb attack on the network.=20
Hours after what the Secret Service described as =E2=80=9Ca potentially exp=
losive package=E2=80=9D was recovered at CNN=E2=80=99s New York offices, si=
milar to the ones sent to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and George Soros, t=
he head of the network released a statement that pointed the finger at Pres=
ident Trump and his administration.=20
=E2=80=9CThere is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White H=
ouse about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media,=E2=80=
=9D CNN president Jeff Zucker said in a statement released Wednesday aftern=
oon.  =E2=80=9CThe President, and especially the White House Press Secretar=
y should understand their words matter.  Thus far, they have shown no compr=
ehension of that. =E2=80=9D
The package sent to CNN was found in the mailroom of the Time Warner Center=
 in New York City, and it triggered an evacuation of the building that last=
ed several hours.  It was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, a =
commentator on MSNBC =E2=80=94 not CNN =E2=80=94 who is frequently critical=
 of Trump.=20
No one was injured by the devices.=20
Trump, who often sums up CNN=E2=80=99s coverage of his administration as =
=E2=80=9Cfake news,=E2=80=9D addressed the discovery of the string of suspi=
cious packages during a White House event Wednesday on opioid addiction.=20
=E2=80=9CThe safety of the American people is my highest and absolute prior=
ity,=E2=80=9D the president said.  =E2=80=9CIn these times, we have to unif=
y.  We have to come together and send one very clear, strong unmistakable m=
essage: that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no plac=
e in the United States of America. =E2=80=9D
The chant =E2=80=9CCNN sucks!=E2=80=9D has become a staple of Trump=E2=80=
=99s campaign rallies, perhaps second only to the =E2=80=9CLock her up!=E2=
=80=9D chant directed at his former presidential rival, Hillary Clinton, wh=
ose home with former President Bill Clinton also received a suspicious pack=
age Wednesday.=20
Hatred of CNN has become a rallying cry for many of the president=E2=80=99s=
 supporters.  Earlier in the day, Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale apol=
ogized for a fundraising email attacking the media that went out two hours =
after the news broke of the suspicious packages.  Sent under Lara Trump=E2=
=80=99s name, the email said =E2=80=9Cit=E2=80=99s time for us to give the =
media another wake-up call from the American people. =E2=80=9D
=E2=80=9CThe email went out today unfortunately was a pre-programmed, autom=
ated message that was not caught before the news broke,=E2=80=9D Parscale s=
aid in his statement.  =E2=80=9CWe apologize for this.  We in no way condon=
e violence against anyone who works for CNN, or anywhere else. =E2=80=9D
In the wake of an (apparently nonpolitical) shooting that killed five emplo=
yees of the Annapolis, Md. , Capital Gazette in June, CNN anchor Jim Acosta=
 has repeatedly clashed with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, dem=
anding that she renounce the president=E2=80=99s characterization of the pr=
ess as the =E2=80=9Cenemy of the people. =E2=80=9D
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Sch=
umer, also frequent Trump targets, issued a joint statement Wednesday decry=
