   Tara was ranting, rushing from room to room grabbing tee shirts
   and shorts and shoving them into her already overstuffed knapsack. it wa=

   truth was, it was only free because Karla was afraid to do the
   whole nude beach thing alone.    Tara and Braydon were roommates, but mo=
reover were best friends
   since kindergarten and have been inseparable since. There was no awkward=
ness
   about nudity, theirs, or anyone else's. they were naturally adventurous,
   unabashed people and that's why Karla asked them to join her.    Tara! B=
raydon quipped, why are you packing all those clothes? it?s
   a nude beach, Dork!
   I know piped Tara, But I still got to have my swag, she said as
   she was now un-stuffing her knapsack.    I'm ready. Let?s blow this pop =
stand! I'm Driving! you're riding
   shotgun, joked Braydon as he ran out the door with the keys to his Jeep.=
    Tara loved riding in Braydon's Jeep. The top was off for the summer,
   and it was the perfect of vehicle for road trips.    Tara threw her knap=
sack in the back and hopped in, excited about
   the gnarly adventure ahead.    Take the 405 to San Diego, said Tara, it =
will get us there the
   quickest. Okeydokey Braydon laughed as he pulled out of the driveway and=
 on to
   the adventure trail.    The resort was in San Diego just off the infamou=
s Blacks Beach.    Tara was excited. She liked Karla and the two of them wo=
uld no doubt be each
   other?s security blanket over the weekend.    Karla had a body that woul=
d not quit, Tara was sure that Karla
   only wanted her there in comparison. Tara was a classic beauty tall and =
thin
   with a natural air about her no fuss, no frills just a pretty tomboy, mo=

   comfortable fishing or running barefoot through the grass than attending=
 dress
   up parties or shoe shopping. but that's what Karla liked about her. she =
was not
   afraid to be who she was, and she made no apologies about it.    Braydon=
 was all arms and legs, at six feet two inches he filled
   any space he was in; Blond, tanned, and muscular with a million-watt smi=
le, and
   a laugh that was contagious. Braydon worked as a roofer, and it made for
   interesting tan lines on his body. He never wore a shirt while working s=
o his
   face and torso were so brown that he looked alien, while his legs were s=
o white,
   they glowed.    I can?t believe you're wearing board shorts, laughed Tar=
a, you look like a reverse zebra! cover up them legs before I go blind! Tar=
a said, laughing a little too hard at Braydon's expense. Braydon chirped, a=
t least I am wearing matching shoes!
   Tara looked at her feet and gasped. Oh My God Braydon! why
   didn't you tell me my shoes don't match? Now we?ve got to stop so I can =
buy new
   ones!
   No, we don?t. Braydon replied. I packed both partners of the
   shoes you have on. I was just wondering how long it would take for you t=
o
   notice.    Tara Laughed and slugged Braydon in the arm. Jerk! she quippe=
d,
   as she smiled and settled into the seat for the trip. you know me too we=
ll.    I know you better than you know yourself, said Braydon.    find us s=
ome travelling tunes and let?s get this show on the
   road.    The signpost read San Diego 120 miles.    Tara was searching th=
rough the radio stations when the announcer stated that the 405 was closed =
due to a serious accident just outside of San Diego and all drivers must fi=
nd an alternate route.    Tara panicked a little, oh no! what are we going =
to do Braydon? I don?t want to miss this weekend.    Chill out Tara, Braydo=
n replied calmly, I know San Diego like the back of my hand I know where to=
 get off, don?t worry, I?ll get you to the beach on time.    I know you wil=
l. said Tara.    SOS by Rihanna was playing on the radio, Tara pushed the v=
olume to max and started singing and dancing along with the music, Braydon =
looked at Tara with all the love one person could have for another and join=
ed in the gaiety.    Traffic was moving along freely; Tara was relishing in=
 the feeling of wind rushing through her hair and over her bare arms. She w=
as feeling as free as a bird.    ?SOS please someone help me, it?s not heal=
thy for me to feel this way? Tara was animated, singing at the top of her l=
ungs bouncing up and down in the seat waving her arms and shaking her head =
like a lunatic.    A California Highway Motorcycle Patrolman pulled alongsi=
de the Jeep and Gestured for Braydon to pull over.=20
   Braydon, immediately put on his hazard lights and began making his way t=
o the right shoulder of the freeway.    See what you did! Braydon said thro=
ugh clenched teeth. Every single time! We can?t go nowhere without you gett=
ing us into trouble!
   Tara reached for the radio knob and turned it off as the Officer approac=
hed the vehicle.    Tara pulled down the visor to check herself in the mirr=
or and laughed when she saw her reflection. Her hair was a mess, windblown =
and wild, her freckled face was red from the sun and from the voracity of h=
er bellowing?s.    The Patrolman reached the driver side window and asked, =

 Tara piped, I?m sorry for acting crazy, we?re just having fun.    Where ar=
e you headed? Oh, San Diego, Said Braydon as he handed his license and insu=
rance papers to the officer.    Wait one moment and I will be back to you. =
Please stay inside of your vehicle. Said the Officer.    The Patrolman went=
 to his Motorcycle to run Braydon?s information.    Tara said, I?m sorry Br=
ay Bray, don?t be mad at me. At least you weren?t speeding, this time.    Y=
ou?re lucky I wasn?t. said Braydon. I can?t afford another ticket on my ins=
urance.    The Patrolman returned to the Jeep and handed Braydon his items =
back.    Okay, everything looks fine here, please try to keep your body ins=
ide of the vehicle for the rest of your trip. The patrolman said, directing=
 his stare at Tara.    I will Sir, sorry. Tara said, shrinking back into he=
r seat and fastening her seatbelt.    On the road again, Braydon sang as he=
 pulled safely back onto the freeway.    The signpost read San Diego 60 mil=
es.    Halfway there, Tara sang delightedly. Are you scared Braydon? Are yo=
u okay with being naked around a bunch random of people?
   I think I?ll be okay, Braydon said. I don?t know anyone there and they d=
on?t know me. Good, bad, or indifferent its only for two days and I will pr=
obably never see any of them again except you and Karla, and I?ve already s=
een the both of you naked, so no worries.    Are you scared? Braydon asked =
coyly.    Well, said Tara hesitantly, I am a little. Why? Asked Braydon.   =
 I don?t know, said Tara. All of a sudden, I got goosebumps in my stomach! =
Braydon laughed. You get butterflies in your stomach goof ball! You get goo=
se bumps on your skin.    Well, I have goose bumps in my stomach! Tara insi=
sted.  I hope I can do this.    What are you afraid of? Asked Braydon.    I=
 don?t know, Tara said. I guess I?m afraid of the unknown.    Well, that?s =
just plain dumb. Braydon said matter of factly. You are an amazing person, =
and you are beautiful, never forget that. And you aren?t in competition wit=

he San Diego valley. Ten minutes later after winding through side streets a=

   Free from her life at the hospital, Zayah walked along the edge of the a=

   She leaned over the side, her hazel colored hair flowing out in the wind=
 as she watched the land thousands of feet below. Fields of crops looked li=
ke floor tiles. The ocean, a bright blue in the summer morning, looked vast=
 and endless, just how she imagined it to be. Her vision fogged as the Smok=
e-Stream rode through another set of clouds, droplets of water forming on h=

   Crew members passed behind. One counted barrels of stock, another went t=
o climb to the eagle?s nest with a spyglass in hand and lunch in the other.=
 Zayah turned and craned her neck. The top of the airship always left her i=
n awe?she had read about them, but to see one in person! The sails, tilted =
flat instead of sideways like it would be on a boat, shaded the airship and=
 fluttered with the wind. Wooden poles laced with metals supported the sail=
s, and the elegant design of smoke trails led up the wood in snaking patter=
ns. Zayah looked to the eagle?s nest, which rested high in the clouds.    =

   ?Hey,? a sky-sailor called out to the one climbing the ladder, ?watch fo=
r the bird!?
   A black bird with white wings, as big as a pigeon, swooped in and grabbe=
d at the man?s sandwich. He reached out to swat the bird?a failed attempt, =
it sped away from him?and promptly lost his balance on the ladder. He fell =
to the deck with a thud.    Other sky-sailors laughed as he stood up, brush=
ing himself off and laughing with them. Zayah rushed over. The man?s right =
arm had scraped against the deck and left a small reddened wound most would=
n?t catch or would just ignore. Zayah raised both her hands in front of her=
 and channeled her power, her eyes glowing white, her fingertips emitting t=
angible streams of a silver light that reached out to the cut, sealing it. =
It restored the patch of skin to its natural color.    =20
   The crew and ship, apart from the mechanisms groaning beneath, fell sile=
nt.    =20
   ?Woah, kid, I?m fine,? he said, turning to her. The sky-sailor looked to=
 his arm in confusion, then spotted the silver light as it drifted off from=
 his skin. ?It was nothing more than a scratch. We don?t need a divine for =

   He patted her shoulder and returned to climbing the ladder.=20

   Why wouldn?t she help him? Wounds as small as scratches didn?t tire her =
out, and the nurses had always scolded her if she missed them. She walked b=

   What would it take to convince the captain to land?

   As far as Zayah could tell from the books she had read?and she had read =
a lot, being cooped up in the hospital?the lands below belonged to the race=
 known as the Noceous. They perished in a territory war ages ago, and their=
 buildings were left as a sign of respect from the opposing side. They rema=
ined guarded everyday to prevent bandits and anyone could visit the ruins a=
nd look through the buildings without a cost. Wouldn?t that be a sight? She=
 wouldn?t have to imagine it from the words of a textbook anymore if she co=
uld walk along the ruins and take in the archeology.    =20
   She climbed up the steps to where the Smoke-Steam?s captain, Pax, leaned=
 over a steering wheel as she read a map. Pax?s one eye, the other hidden b=
ehind a black eye-patch, studied the map closely. A long scar twisted down =
from her silver hair, to under her eye-patch, and then below her ear and al=
l the way to her neck.    =20
   ?You?re a real pirate. Of the skies,? Zayah said, smiling. Other sky-sai=
lors at the bow backed up at her words. Pax turned with one hand leaning on=
 the steering wheel, and a crew member rushed up to take the map from her. =

   ?You have the eye-patch, and the hat, and everything, Pax. Just like the=
 pirates in the stories I?ve read.?

   Pax stared at her, confused, then turned back to the steering wheel. Bir=
ds of all kinds flew around them, flapping their wings and cawing to one an=
other. The steel clunk of a harpoon fired somewhere further down, rope unwi=
nding rapidly, the shot ultimately hitting nothing.    =20
   ?Captain?? Zayah asked.    =20
   ?It ain?t a story I usually tell. An? no. I barely feel it now. Lost my =
eye some time ago to raiders. Missed a parry and took a blade down my foreh=
ead.? She twisted her neck to give Zayah the full view of the scar. It ende=
d just above her shoulder blade.    =20
   ?It would?ve split my skull in two if I didn?t dodge back in time. Aye, =
but we lost too many men that day for the story to be about me. It ain?t so=

ly flooding with light and glowing as bright as shining pearls. Translucent=
 silver streams drifted out from her fingertips and up into the air and Pax=
 laughed. Crew mates down on the deck stopped as if startled by the noises.=

   The streams of light couldn?t find any purchase on Pax?s skin. Zayah tri=
ed to guide it up to her eye, but the light drifted off in the wind. Pax le=
aned back over the steering wheel and waved for someone to bring her the ma=

   Why did she have to ask Emile? Sure, she owed him everything. He had fre=
ed her from the hospital and given her a name after all, but some days he t=
reated her coldly, others the opposite. Either he would tell her to go both=
er somebody else or ask her of her day. She walked slow and dragged her fee=

   ?Your grace,? Taelo called to her as she passed by the sky harpoon. ?I g=
ot a few cuts on my hand from reloading this damned harpoon. To think the s=
ailors here don?t carry something as simple as gloves.?

   She approached and let her divinity take over. She guided streams of lig=
ht toward his open palm, sinking them into the nicks and cuts that swarmed =
his hands. Small wounds to her felt like pouring a glass of water into the =
ocean?it barely cost her any energy with how much practice she had. Taelo t=
hanked her, then snapped his fingers. The air around his palm distorted. A =
cool trick. She had read about distortion magic, but never witnessed it in =
person. When Emile asked Taelo to come along, he had been distorting the in=
k off of playing cards. That had been fun to watch.    =20
   ?Have you ever sky fished?? Taelo asked.    =20
   ?I?ve never left the hospital before last week.?

   ?It?s very difficult. Whenever you think you?re about to nail one of the=
se birds, they jerk out of the way at the last second. And don?t get me sta=
rted on the machinery,? he tapped his hand against the metal handles of the=
 harpoon. The surface of the material twisted and churned as if it were loo=
se paper in the wind, then snapped back to normal. Like an optical illusion=

   ?It?s far too slow even for the biggest of prey,? he continued, ?we?ll b=
e starving if we ever have to rely on it.?

the harpoon. He settled on one of the black and white birds gliding alongsi=
de the ship, but held off on the trigger. ?If I asked them for help, the my=
stery of how to work this dreaded thing would be gone. I wouldn?t feel as a=
ccomplished as if I did it myself, your grace. Surely you can understand, a=
s you wouldn?t go ask somebody else to speak to Emile for you.?

   Zayah crossed her arms. Taelo fired off the harpoon again, and the bird =
dashed down wards, avoiding the spike entirely. It then flew back into plac=
e as if taunting him. Taelo cursed and turned back to her.    =20

   Her face reddened. ?You know what I mean. I?m not of royal descent. I li=
ved the last fifteen years in a hospital and maybe, if I was lucky, I would=
?ve been sold to a castle. Even then I wouldn?t be royalty.?

wind the rope back up. ?Divines were worshiped in the past before being sla=

   He couldn?t be older than twenty-five, Zayah guessed. Was this what was =
meant by being able to distort time? Few books she read mentioned it, and s=
he thought it to be a myth. Now she couldn?t help but feel awe around the m=
an. How long had he lived? What had he seen and learned in that time?

   He smiled. ?That?s a story for another time, your grace. Go on now, befo=
re Pax gets impatient. Even I fear that woman.? He reached for the harpoon =
to reload it, and Zayah waited to see if he?d cut his hands again. Once the=
 harpoon clunked back into place she walked on forward. She passed by the s=
ky-sailor scribbling inventory as he counted the insides of a barrel, and o=
thers taking breaks to lean over the edge and eat.    =20
   Emile sat on top of the bulwark. He looked?thoughtful. Sad even.    =20
   ?Emile?? she asked from a respectful distance. She didn?t want to startl=
e him and cause him to fall?even if he could survive it. He turned his head=
 to her. His unbuttoned shirt hung open in the wind, revealing scars litter=
ing his chest. She had done the best she could to heal him, but could not e=
rase the look of the lacerations.    ?Go bother somebody else.?

   ?The captain wanted to know if we are okay to land, that?s all, I?ll lea=
ve right after you answer-?

   He jumped off from the bulwark and onto the ship, leaning himself agains=
t the wall. ?This isn?t some road trip, you know. I?m wanted in the capital=
, and they?ll be out looking for you as well. The longer we stay here, the =
longer we risk them catching up. We?ll land at Duskbraith in two days time.=

   ?We?ll be fine. The captain lets us on this ship because the trinket wil=
l be hers once we?re done. She?ll starve everyone for those riches. Once sh=
e has it, and I?m done dealing with the cult, you?re free to explore all th=
e ruins you?d like. Go.?

   The trinket. Emile had spoken little of it, but from what she could gath=
er, a cult had massacred his village in search of some holy trinket. And he=
 didn?t care to retrieve it, but rather to deal with the cult that had take=
n it. She would help him see it through. He had given her a name when she h=
ad just been a number?she owed him as much as she could.    =20
   ?Okay,? she whispered. ?I?ll tell her.?

   She slouched and turned towards the captain?s deck.    =20
   ?Ah, damn it. Wait, Zayah. I?ll go with you. I?ll tell her to land.? Emi=
le sighed, then caught up with her. ?You remind me right of my sister at ti=
mes. I hated seeing her like that.?

   ?The cult didn?t leave a survivor. I was caught up with a hunting group =
that night and missed it. It?s nothing you?d want to hear about.? Emile ran=
 a hand through his hair. The cold look he usually donned seemed to clash w=
ith the thoughtful, sad one. ?We?re not staying down there for more than a =
day. Hear me? We?ll be back in the skies by tomorrow night. And you?re not =
going anywhere without a guard. I can?t afford to lose my divine.?

   He seemed to struggle with his words. Was he sick? Zayah let her eyes gl=

p. She watched the land pass slowly below?free at last, thanks to Emile, fr=
