 grin. That?s all I saw before I moved. I imagine the breath escaping that =
mouth smells just as foul as the teeth look. Where I?m sitting now, resting=
, trying to regain some semblance of sanity, I try to recall the detail of =
that awful episode. Chepi is sitting an arm?s length away from me, trying t=
o catch her breath. If it wasn?t for her scream and warning to escape, I th=
ink I might have been in more pain than just my wings and lungs aching righ=
t now. ?What just happened?? I ask. ?What was that thing?? Taking a deep br=
eath, Chepi turns to me and whispers: ?That, Alvy, was the trickster god, L=
oki. And he was making a play for The Book.?
My eyes widen as I try to close my mouth. I can?t help but stare at Chepi. =
We?re both pixies from the Abla tribe. I look like the average Abla boy, po=
inty ears, big green eyes with blonde curly hair, tall in stature and wings=
 to match, a pointy brown hat, and evenly coloured brown shirt and shorts. =
I?m the eldest of my siblings, blessed with an abundance of patience and go=
od sense of humour. Chepi is my best friend and has been since the beginnin=
g of our kindergarten years. We?ve passed through our teenage years stuck t=
o each another?s sides, and now we?re facing the challenging times of puber=
ty together. She?s is a petit little girl, measuring just under 4 inches, w=
ith short autumn-red hair pointing in all directions, long sleek wings the =
colour of silver and a pale green mini-dress made of fairy-silk. She?s also=
 strong willed and very playful, and exactly the reason why I?m in this pre=
dicament. Just two moons ago Chepi and I were playing in the tall grass by =
the lake, up to our usual mischief. There was a cool breeze to alleviate th=
e hot summer weather, cotton wool clouds forming in the magnificent and cle=
ar blue sky. The tall grass rustled in the wind, releasing a soothing sound=
 that carried over the lake, making little ripples on the water. We were in=
 high spirits, teasing and tricking each other, making the other laugh?alwa=
ys our greatest gain. Chepi abruptly stopped her shenanigans and called dow=
n to me, ?Did you hear that Alvy?? I was on the ground busy mixing a concoc=
tion of mud and leaves, intending to put war smudges on my cheeks and could=
n?t hear as clear as Chepi, who was hovering at the top of the tall grass, =
her wings flapping for stability in the breeze. ?No, I didn?t hear anything=
 other than the sounds of nature? I replied. She moved her head to the righ=
t, concentration written in her auburn eyes as she squinted. ?Someone is ca=
lling from the lake!? she gasped. ?Alvy, someone knows we?re here.? I looke=
d up, smiling, ?Of course someone knows where we are, this is the place we =
most often come to play. I?m sure it?s no secret to anyone in the village.?=
 Chepi shook her head, ?No Alvy, this isn?t someone we know, or who knows u=
s. I can feel it. My senses are tingling right now.?
I stopped what I was doing and flew up to Chepi, all the while trying to ca=
tch the sound that she was talking about. Once I reached her, I also heard =
a voice from the lake, calling out to us specifically. ?You?re right Chepi!=
? I said with eyes fixed on the water. ?I can hear it clearly, but I don?t =
see anyone.? She put her finger on her lips for me to be quiet, grabbed my =
arm, and pulled me down into the grass to take cover. ?It sounds like someo=
ne?s in trouble? Chepi whispered. ?We have to be smart about this.? For som=
e reason my heart began to beat faster, sensing that we might be in danger.=
 ?Let?s go back to the village and tell the elders about this? I urged her,=
 thinking that for some reason she would listen to my plea. On cue she shru=
gged her shoulders, pointing her little index finger under my nose, ?Don?t =
always run away from adventure Alvy, let?s go find out why someone is calli=
ng. They might need our help and by the time the elders have decided on the=
 best action to take, it could be too late.?
That?s what Chepi always did. She never thought anything through and by the=
 time things didn?t go as planned, she would scrunch up her nose and say, ?=
You live, you learn.? Luckily, no one has ever been seriously hurt because =
of her mantra, though they would often end up with faces full of mud, flour=
, eggs, or whatever was in the mix when Chepi?s tricks went belly-up. And m=
ore times than I can remember, I was stuck with helping her clean up the re=
mains of that trick. I still had reservations about going to investigate th=
e calling. However, I knew that Chepi wouldn?t let it go and I would never =
let her go on her own. As a sigh escaped from my mouth, I started towards t=
he lake, ?C?mon then, we haven?t got all day. But please be careful, and le=
t?s remain together.? With a giggle and a cheer Chepi quickly followed me. =
The calling became louder as we got closer to the lake. We looked around ca=
refully, approaching slowly. And then suddenly there it was, hanging upside=
 down from a majestic Willow?s branch. I didn?t know what to make of the cr=
eature at first, whether it was human or animal, reptile, bird, or fish. It=
 had a peculiar form and even more peculiar was the way in which the colour=
s on its coat seemed to move. Like a whirlpool of shades, from orange to bl=
ue, then yellow to brown to red and purple, all the colours of the rainbow =
flowing then ebbing inwards and outwards. ?Wow? Chepi gasped, ?That?s beaut=
iful.? I caught her eye, ?I agree Chepi, but let?s remain together until we=
 know what it is and what it wants? I once again pleaded. ?Don?t worry your=
 little head Alvy? Chepi said, ?I told you I?d be careful.? With that reass=
urance, she swooped towards this hanging thing. ?Hi there!? she greeted it,=
 ?We heard you calling, is something the matter?? The creature seemed to mo=
ve slightly. ?Oh, thank you so much for answering my call, I?m in need of y=
our help,? it replied. And that?s where it all began. Being stuck in the tr=
ee and hanging upside down as a result of being tricked, the creature had c=
alled out for help. It couldn?t tell us who had tricked it, only how the sp=
ell brought along could be broken. It was up to us whether we wanted to sav=
e the poor creature, or leave it to an unmentionable end. All we had to do =
was dig up an old book, called The Book, bring it to the willow, and read a=
 few lines from a specific passage out loud?.easy enough. I didn?t have to =
look at Chepi to tell she was intrigued, because I was too, to be honest. ?=
Where would we find The Book?? I asked. The creature was quiet for a while,=
 its colours still morphing into other colours. When it spoke, it was with =
a sense of urgency and something that sounded like sadness. ?Dig under the =
big throne in the elders? gathering hall. Look for a white, cotton-weaved p=
ouch wrapped with a red ribbon. But be careful not to do it when the elders=
 are around, and also not at sunrise or sunset.?
Chepi and I were baffled. It was kind of obvious why it had to be done in t=
he absence of any elders, but why the specific times? I wanted to ask, but =
the creature continued, ?I am truly sorry, I cannot divulge why it should b=
e done the way I?ve requested, because it would influence the way I change =
back into my original form. Neither can I answer any more questions about t=
his task. All I can do is to put my trust in your help. Please!?
It was Chepi who answered, ?We?ll do what you ask, but it won?t be easy and=
 might take some time. Will you be alright until we can come back with The =
Book?? ?Don?t worry about me, I?ve been like this since the seasons started=
 to change.? I knew it was a long time, because we were enjoying the last s=
ummer month. ?Hold on tight, we will do our best to help you,? Chepi once a=
gain reassured the creature. As we flew back to the village, the sun began =
to set, placing a golden glow on the valley in which the village lay. Summe=
r was a beautiful time of year but also the busiest. This was the time when=
 all inhabitants of the valley would gather enough food to last during autu=
mn and winter, when the lake would be frozen and flowers lay buried beneath=
 layers of snow. We already had a plan in place, formed during our flight h=
ome. Both of us would arrange with our parents to get up earlier than usual=
 to get a head start with the activities of the day. Since the learning cen=
tre was closed for summer, we didn?t have to attend any school and would be=
 free to look for The Book before our day of gathering food would begin and=
 after it ended. Our parents knew each other and have become family friends=
 as a result of our friendship. They trusted us enough to allow this change=
 in schedule which would ultimately also help the village. For almost the n=
ext two moons Chepi and I got up before sunrise to attempt this task, retur=
ning home only after sunset, exhausted and dirty from tip-toeing around the=
 elders and their gathering hall. Our lucky break came when the elders were=
 called to a council meeting in a village one valley over. It was raining d=
uring the week, causing the elders to pack up and leave just after sunset o=
ne evening. They didn?t dare be late or not show up on account of the weath=
er, so they decided to not travel by air but take a leafy boat on a stream =
flowing past the village where they needed to be. Once all of the elders bo=
arded the boat, Chepi and I made a beeline for the gathering hall. We would=
n?t get this opportunity again. Digging with the tools we had retrieved fro=
m where they were buried in close proximity to the hall, our veins were pum=
ped up with frustration and energy, our hearts beating fast as we tried to =
do it in silence. It was more difficult than we had initially thought. The =
big throne stood on ground that was there since the village was built. It w=
as like digging into stone, but when we made the first dent, there was no s=
topping. It had to be done that night. After hours of digging we found the =
pouch containing The Book. It looked old and thick, its pages yellow staine=
d from age. The book itself was covered in dark brown leather and the inscr=
iption on the front looked ominous and was unreadable. It was only then tha=
t saw the damage we?ve done to the surrounding earth. If we didn?t want to =
get into trouble, as we both knew we would if we were discovered, we had to=
 leave the place as we found it. Another couple of hours went by as we star=
ted with reparations. Finally, drenched in our own sweat and probably some =
tears, we went home for a well deserved rest. We agreed to meet at sunrise =
the following day to get to the willow by the lake. ?Good morning Alvy,? Ch=
epi greeted. ?I hope you had a good night?s rest!? I eyed Chepi with a body=
 full of aches. ?Mornin? Chepi, I could?ve done with some more,? I replied.=
 She laughed, teasing me, ?You?ll be so happy once we?ve helped the creatur=
e, you wouldn?t feel the hurt anymore!? And with that, we set of to keep ou=
r word to the creature. When we arrived, the creature was still hanging on =
the branch, just as we had left it two moons ago. ?Hello there,? Chepi gree=
ted. The creature stirred and answered in a low and tired voice, ?Greetings=
 to you my friends. It is nice to see you again.? I didn?t feel the need to=
 greet and slightly nodded my head, ?Let?s get down to business shall we. I=
?m sure you don?t want to be stuck in the tree longer than need be.?
Chepi took The Book from the pouch, opening it very carefully as the pages =
seemed stuck to each other from all those years just lying buried in the gr=
ound. Before she could turn to a specific page the creature had moved acros=
s the branch and lunged towards us. The sudden movement startled us and wit=
h a cry we jumped back. Then the creature changed shape, becoming something=
 with more substance, becoming human-like. The last thing I saw before we f=
led from it was a wide grin, displaying its teeth?horrible, horrible teeth.=
 It laughed in a way that chilled the blood in my veins, sending a ringing =
through my ears. I saw Chepi flying off with The Book and went after her. W=
e moved until we were sure nothing was following us anymore and came to a h=
alt at an old tree covered with bright green moss. Gasping for air, I cast =
an eye towards Chepi, ?Are you okay, did he hurt you anywhere?? Chepi?s eye=
s are big and frightened, ?I?m fine, are you okay?? I nod my head, too out =
of breath to really answer, too tired and scared to let myself enjoy the cl=
ean fresh air filling my lungs. Chepi points at The Book, ?I had a look at =
it last night, after I got home. It?s not an average book and I now underst=
and why it was buried underneath the big throne in the elders? gathering ha=
ll. It?s a book with magic spells, especially useful to a trickster god. It=
 was buried to protect our tribe.? I knew something was up the moment we sa=
w the creature! ?Why didn?t you say something this morning?? I ask Chepi wi=
th an angry voice. I was really terrified and too tired to hide it from her=
 ?I honestly thought we were doing something good? she whispers, her brigh=
t green eyes filling with tears. As I take The Book from Chepi and start tu=
rning the pages, cautious not to make a sound, it all begins to make sense.=
 The creature hanging on the branch was the trickster god, Loki. Loki knew =
the book contained magic spells and with him being a trickster, it would ha=
ve been detrimental if we had lost it. At least, that is what I can deduct =
from notes scribbled in the margins of some of the pages. Luckily, in our h=
aste to escape, Chepi clenched The Book under her arm and fled to where we =
are now. I close The Book and glance at Chepi, ?I hope you?ve learnt your l=
esson young lady. Loki tricked us into believing that he was a helpless cre=
ature in need of our help.? Chepi giggles and gives her signature shrug aga=
in, followed by the words so familiar to me, ?You live, you learn.? I can?t=
 imagine what our fate would?ve been, had Loki been able to snatch the book=
 from us. But for now, we still live to trick another day.--->

Looking up at Abigail, with very big eyes, was Emma. Adorable in her green =
pointed hat, dancing and twirling in front of Abigail. She couldn't stand s=
till. "Has the cat got your tongue, young lady?" Emma carried on. Abigail c=
ould not grasp what was going on. Am I dreaming? Am I really seeing this? H=
earing this?
"I'm sorry, I didn't see you. My name is Abigail." she felt silly and looke=
d around to see if anyone was watching. "No problem. Just be careful. I'm g=
oing to gather a few more friends to teach them a new dance. What are you d=
oing in the woods today, shouldn't you be in school?"
"I should be but now that the Covid virus is around we only have school on =
certain days," Abigail answered. "by the way, I'm Abigail. "Oh poppycock, c=
hildren should be in school. This virus nonsense is an excuse. It is essent=
ial to study and be with your friends!" huffed Emma. "I do miss my friends =
very much," Abigail sighed as she thought how lonely she had been since sch=
ool days were cut back. "I have to go now Emma, will you be here tomorrow?
"This is my favourite spot where I can relax in the sun. I'll be here. Woul=
d you like to join me and the gang practice our new dance tomorrow?"
"Sure I'll be here," Abigail skipped off home. As she pushed the back door =
open she wondered what her Mum would say if she told her what had just happ=
ened in the woods. I won't tell. Mum will just tell me my imagination is ru=
nning away with me again. The next day Abigail returned to the spot where s=
he had left Emma but there was no one there. "Emma, Emma!" she called, but =
the woods were silent. I'm sure this was the spot. Abigail kept calling and=
 searching for Emma but all in vain. Maybe I did imagine Emma, silly me, Mu=
m does say my imagination is over the top. "Why so quiet tonight Abby?" Mum=
 asked. "You spent the entire day in the woods, what were you doing?"
"Nothing in particular. I'm going to spend the day there again tomorrow. Go=
odnight Mum."
At the crack of dawn Abigail was up and dressed. She had to make sure she w=
asn't imagining things. Emma had been so real. Their conversation had been =
so real. Again she called "Emma, Emma!"
"Oh shush Abigail, you will have the entire village out here with all that =
noise!"
"Emma, I'm so glad to see you. I thought you might not come back."
"Right young lady are you ready to learn to dance like a pixie should," Emm=
a clapped her hands and pixies started appearing from behind bushes and ski=
pped down the path to the clearing. There was singing and music the rest of=
 the day. Emma was quite the real driving force behind the scenes. Correcti=
ng fumbled steps or making sure how to properly execute a pirouette. She ch=
ecked that hands were an extension of the arms. "Relax the hands!" she woul=
d remind her troupe. Day after day Abigail arrived at the clearing and twir=
led in the sun with her friends, learning all the steps. "Emma, my days wit=
h you are magical. I can't wait to get up in the morning to get out here."
"I am sure your Mum and friends would not believe you If you told them what=
 was happening out here in the forest Abigail. Or could I call you Abby?"
"Sure you can Emma."
"Abby, I have some bad news. Tomorrow we all move on, we have stayed here f=
ar too long. I do hope you will still join us for tomorrow for one more day=

Abigail slowly trudged home. Devastated. She didn't close an eye that night=
 and at breakfast she looked out the window. The weather outside was like h=
er heart, she thought. Overcast and dark. No sunshine today. "Are you sure =
about going into the woods today Abby, you could get caught in a rain storm=
 "I have to go Mum"
What's so important to this child of mine that she has to go to the woods e=
ach day thought Mum. "Be back for tea this afternoon Abby."
"Okey dokey Mum. Promise!" Abbey blew her Mum a kiss as she peddled her bik=
e hard to get to the woods quick as possible. Arriving at the clearing Abig=
ail found herself alone. Not a friend in sight. The skies were dull as Abig=
ail's heart. I would have loved just one more day with the Pixies and at le=
ast say goodbye. Sitting a a rock, she waited. They might still pitch. She =
was hoping they might just be a bit late but as the day dragged by, she res=
ided herself to the fact that they had left. Her heart broken, she pushed h=
er bike home. "I'm not hungry Mum. I'll bath and go to bed."
"What's wrong Abby, I've never seen you so despondent. Talk to me."
"Maybe later, Mum." Abigail was off to her room. She lay on her bed thinkin=
g back about this past week. She had been so happy. Nothing like this had e=
ver happened to her. Thunder and lightning filled her room and she heard th=
e rain on the windows. Abigail tossed and turned but could not get to sleep=
 Eventually the moon peeked through the window and ..... Am I imagining it=
 - I am sure that is music outside.=20

dancing and twirling in the moonlight. Emma was directing as usual, at the =
end of the dance she looked up at the window and waved at Abigail, blew a k=

bye Emma," said Abigail as she stared at the troupe departing. Waving at th=
em. "Abigail, love, are you alright. Who are you talking to?" Mum stood nex=
t to her at the window. "They came to say goodbye, Mum."

The district he lives in was known for the brutal lifestyle. It is no place=
 for the weak, the rules that built the area were meant only for the fit, t=
he ones who can't adapt to the atmosphere around there suffer what?s worse =
than death, and that affected Irk?an?s life. He was not only the youngest a=
mong his brothers; he was scrawny and pale with a weak body that can't resi=
st the slightest change in the world around him, even though he was the wea=
k and vulnerable link in the family, that can bring harm to his father?s na=
me and reputation, he was the loved one to his parents and brothers too. Wh=
at he didn?t have in his body from strength and size, he replaced with know=
ledge, being a quick learner, and having a powerful memory that none of the=
 family ever had. He was able to learn all stored wisdom in full volumes wi=
th his first read-through. His father was feeding him all that he ever need=
s to know about the lands they live in, and the politics and history, tryin=
g to get a knowledgeable and wise leader out of him, that can free the land=
 from its current situation. His mother kept on praising and spoiling him, =
convincing him that he will lead this land to the light, and furthermore to=
 the height that no one before him could ever dream of reaching. With the h=
elp of his powerful brothers, who never leave his back open to any stray an=
d harmful wind. He was home taught, never in need to attend any school, for=
 those having nothing to give him more than what he actually has already. H=
e was friendly to all people around him, making friends with the workers an=
d maids, and with his lovable personality every single person he meets, he =
makes a friend with. Years went by, and when he reached the age of twenty s=
ummers, he started leaving the district and traveling the land trying to ac=
cumulate all the knowledge and skill that the other districts lock up in th=
eir libraries. In one of his travels, and when he was crossing the main bri=
dge up in the north district, his eyes caught sight of two ladies by the ri=
ver underneath them, he usually ignores the sight and continues in his way,=
 but this time he asked the driver to stop the vehicle.=20
The driver obeyed and turned to him to confirm the reason for them to stop;=
 it is a first for the young master to stop the car in the middle of the ro=
ad thought the driver, knowing he is strict when it comes to timing. The dr=
iver noticed the immediate change in the mood, a bliss wrapped his master w=
ith a smile covering his pale face, and turning to the side he was looking =
at the driver realized the reason. =20
?Sir,? said the driver ?do you want me to go ask and for them,? holding a s=
mile on and trying to look professional when he was excited for his master =
is finally showing a genuine interest in the other sex, after all these yea=
rs of him avoiding this type of situations and conversations. ?Ehhh,? said =
Irk?an looking all bashful, ?what should I say to them?? and for the first =
time in this driver?s whole working career for him, he saw his master looki=
ng baffled and out of words. ?You just have to be polite sir.? Adding ?they=
?ll appreciate a compliment from a gentleman.? Irk?an answered, ?you are ri=
ght I?ll just pass by them and wish them the best for the day ahead.?
?Yeah, you can start with that for this time, for we have a meeting to atte=
nd, and you can drop by after,? the driver said that to release some of the=
 stress the young master was holding. ?You are right, Yeah, Yeah,? said Irk=
?an, and with a deep sigh, he exited from the car, heading toward the girl,=
 when his driver stood near the car watching over him. ?Morning, ladies,? s=
aid Irk?an with a smile on his face.=20
?Who you calling ladies, boy,? answered the bronzed girl, and the one next =
to her, the one that caught his eye grinned with a beaming smile, that made=
 her face shine even more. ?Eh,? mumbled Irk?an, ?I?m sorry, I thought you =
are, eh, ladies.? added with timid looks on his face. The bronzed girl burs=
t out laughing, saying ?you are a funny kid.?=20
And with a smack on the back of her head, she stops. ?You look different. Y=
ou are not from here, or anywhere near this land, huh?? The redhead added. =
?and you look rich,? while looking at the vehicle, ?it seems like you shoul=
dn't be here too.?=20
?I saw you both sitting here alone, and I thought to myself let me pass by =
and drop a greeting, and maybe get to know these beautiful ladies.? After s=
aying that, Irk?an thought to himself what have I said? They?ll make fun of=
 me, he didn't finish that thought to be interrupted, ?Hey kid you are luck=
y, Merna said you can come tomorrow. You will find us here early in the mor=
ning, and since we don't plan on training, you can tag along.?
His face glowed with a bright smile and ?YES? he said, ?I will be here. Tha=
nks for inviting me,? He looked over her shoulder to thank the other girl b=
ut she was already gone. Standing next to her white horse and waving goodby=
e to him, he waved back. And, on his way back the bronzed girl shouted ?you=
 forgot to ask for our names.? He froze in his place for a second, then tur=
ned slowly mumbling ?yes.?=20
She laughed and said to him ?her name is Merna, I bet you missed it earlier=
, and Im her friend Aliyah.? waving him goodbye. ?Till tomorrow, don?t be l=
