It was a sun shining day in April. My o= ldest son's birthday had pasted, and My youngest son's birthday was coming.= Spring my favorite time of the year.Spring always offered a chance at the = new. New beginnings, a fresh start to everything. The birds are slowly arri= ving. The air smells of a crisp freshness. The trees are awaking from their w= inter slumber. A new opportunity to grow a garden, spot different birds, ma= ke new friends with the animal kingdom. I love the area I live in. We are s= ituated in a National Park.

=20

I came from a big city to this area fo= r work. Now after many years, I am almost ready to retire. A grandmother of= six small girls and boys. The spring time offers me a new chance to create= a beautiful outdoor family space. Time with the children. Watching them pl= ay and grow I believe is every grandparents' dream. My old brown eyes scann= ed over the yard from the wooden deck which I was standing upon.Spring a ti= me of work and seeding. I began to really notice the dog poop graveyard, an= d how much work I had in front of me. There were patches of brown grass pee= king through the snow and poop.I took another drag of my cigarette.Blowing = the smoke out with a sigh. That is just about the moment I noticed something= out of the corner of my eye.A dark black circle of soil.Off to the left of= the walking path to my "Fairy garden."A little private space whe= re one could sit and relax. Read a story to the children. Or perhaps, rest = in the hammock and enjoy the sounds of summer along with the sunshine.Yes a= black spot.It was not there last year. I tossed my cigarette into the outd= oor ash tray, proceeded to investigate this new black spot.We have owned th= is property for five years now."Strange," I thought to myself as = I strolled across the yard carefully avoiding any dog poop.A ringing began = in my ears.Loudly along with a hum so strong, it made me fall to my knees r= ight in front of the black spot of soil.It was so painful.I covered my ears= closed my eyes and try to let the feeling pass.A couple of minutes later I= realised I was gripping the soil. The soil was warm, wet, and very dark in = my palms and fingers.Dark like blood black yet red.It was so confusing and = exciting at the same time. The phase "wishing well" kept repeating= in my mind.A smile flashed across my face "what a great idea."I'= ll put a wishing well here. The children will love it.With that I raced back= to the house to retrieve my cell phone googled Pinterest for some ideas of= a wishing well.I grabbed the key to the garage and went back outside with = my two dogs following close behind.

=20

I unlocked the garage door picked up t= he spade. Then headed to the black soil.I was planning in my mind to dig it = up a little.Place some river rocks around it.Put some kind of bucket in the= middle and fix it up over the summer. My husband would see what I started a= nd help beautify the well.My heart and mind were exploding with excitement.= I thrusted the spade into the soft black soil.Everything got loud.It seeme= d as if the ground moaned. There was a gush of liquid bubbling to the top.I = couldn't believe my eyes; It was blood.I reached down and let it run throug= h my fingers.I heard a voice in my mind.Clear.It was sad and desperate.A mi= st began to form right in front of me.A figure of a woman. No face just two = eyes filled with tears. The voice echoed around in my mind words one on top = of the other."You have taken from me now I must take from you" ov= er and over again.I was shooked up. I tried to rise and return to the house= There was nothing except a mist. All around me.Misty figures in a circle al= l crying, all moaning. I gather up all the courage I could find in my soul = and asked the misty figures what it was they wanted."What do you want?= " I whispered. They replied."it's what you want a wishing well.&qu= ot; I was so confused. "Do you want me to make it?"The misty figu= res seemed to move about in agreement with each other."Yes It will fre= e us."The mist moved around me."We will grant all your wishes, and you will give us a membe= r of your family in return."I shook my head in disagreement. In a firm = voice I said " I will not do no such thing!"The mist grew thicker= very quickly closing in all around me."you must, You have already tak= en from us.We must take from you."They continued,"we will give yo= u until the first leaf to fall then we will collect. If you have, not pick a= member of your family then we will take you."I began to cry out t= o them."What have I taken from you?"There was no response and in = a blink the misty figures vanished.I was a complete wreck.Shaking, crying, = in utter disbelief.I was still holding the spade in one hand and the other = hand filled with black soil.I truely had no idea what it was that I had jus= t experienced.I was sure to wipe all the soil back on the spot.I removed th= e spade.I carefully placed all the soil back into it rightful spot. Then co= vered the entire area with= river rocks so none of the spot was visible. My dogs and I returned everyth= ing back to the garage and locked the door. I lighted up a new cigarette an= d took a long drag. I was replaying it over and over in my mind. Asking my = self if it was real or if it was to much wine from the night before. My dog= s did not seem to have noticed any thing different. They were not acting an= y different. This was not something a fifty year old woman could share. They= would have locked me up in a hospital.I was pretty shook up, but not afrai= d.I made a wish over those river rocks to release those spirits from their = black spot.I also promised them never to touch or distrube them again. I cu= t my hand with my garden knife and allowed my blood to drip on the top of t= he river rocks to seal my promise to those sad spirits.I felt a release. The= n heard a soft ringing in my ears. I felt a heaviness leave my body, that t= ingled from head to toe.

=20

I decided to keep it to myself until now. Twenty years after my = encounter. There is still no wishing well. The river rocks are all in place.T= he misty figures have never reappeared to collect a member of my family or = me yet.

?Ladies and gentlemen, welcome onboard Emirates Flight EK 652 to= Male? has been announced as I sip my glass of cold bubbly champagne in the= comfortable business class seat. Goodness gracious, I need to pinch myself= Is this a dream?

=20

=20

=20

=20

-Cheers, my friend!

=20

=20

=20

=20

My friend Alina turns to me with a wide smile, fastens her seatb= elt and we take off to a dream vacation.

I arrived to Dubai in 2004 with a few hundred dollars in my pock= et. Two years later I was lucky to join the real estate industry right when= it was booming. My first deal brought me $ 2,000 in commission. I will alw= ays remember a lovely Danish couple, who purchased their holiday home from = our agency. I was devoted to my work, enjoying every bit of it. Meeting peo= ple from around the globe, great income and unique experience. Our manageme= nt awarded my diligence and achievements with a gift -a business class trip= and 3 nights stay at a fancy resort in the Maldives for two.=20

?For two?.Maldives, yeah right?? I murmured to myself. ?Who is c= oming with me?!? I freaked out. I was absolutely boyfriendless, not even a male friend who deserved to be with me on that plane.

=20

=20

=20

=20

Hey, Alina, how are you?

=20

=20

=20

=20

I am good, showing the apartment to a client. Anythin= g urgent?

=20

=20

=20

=20

Errm, not really. Do you want to come to the Maldives= with me? All paid.

=20

=20

=20

=20

What?! Maldives with you? Isn?t it a romantic destina= tion for couples and honeymooners? Are you sure?

=20

=20

=20

=20

Yep, I know. So are you coming or not?

=20

=20

=20

=20

Of course! Talk to you late= r.

=20

=20

=20

=20

I knew it was pathetic. Going to a rom= antic getaway with a friend, but hey, who cares?! That trip was well deserv= ed.

=20

=20

=20

=20

I am sure it was obvious to the cabin = crew we were for the first time in the business class. A charming South Afr= ican flight attendant was making our experience truly memorable. Cocktails,= caviar canapés, fine food, you name it.

=20

=20

=20

=20

Oh my God, Alina! Look at t= his! This is stunning!

=20

=20

=20

=20

I am shaking my friend who dozed off. = Tiny islands look like cute paper crafts floating in the vast ocean. As we = are waiting to board another smaller propeller plane from Male to Maamingil= i island, I have to rub my eyes which are not yet used to so intense azure = colors. Let the fun begin!

=20

=20

=20

=20

Do you know what people do when they g= o to the Maldives? They have super romantic lobster dinner on the beach, so= did we.

=20

=20

=20

=20

The beach, the stars, the sound of the= ocean. Alina and I are sitting at the table, surrounded by torches and sof= t white sand. As our grilled lobster has been served, I burst into laughter= Stare at my friend with a thought: ?A hot handsome guy should have been s= itting in your place, damn it!?

=20

=20

=20

=20

Intrusive ?Enjooooooooy? with cheesy s= mile from the waiter killed me even more. Sri Lankan servant must have thou= ght that we were an LGBT couple on our romantic getaway. This ?Enjoooooooy?= was haunting us throughout the whole stay, making me burst into laughter e= ach time I heard it. ?Thaaaaaaaaank youuuuuuuuu!? I replied choking from la= ughter.

=20

=20

=20

=20

Alina, listen, I am not goi= ng to lie down here like a lazy seal. We need to explore the island.

=20

=20

=20

=20

I know that my travel mate would have = preferred a "lazy seal?option, but she knows I don?t take ?No!? for an= answer, she gives in and we go looking for an adventure. 15 minutes later = we are sailing on a small catamaran. Our captain, a very young Maldivian cu= rly guy, stares at us, trying to guess about our relationship roles.=

=20

=20

=20

=20

She is my friend, we are on= a vacation gifted by my employer, we are not a couple.

=20

=20

=20

=20

I interrupt his fantasy before he is c= arried away in his imagination. The guy nods with a suspicious smirk. He is= kind enough to take us to a small uninhabited island, a place where locals= like to hang out and chill.

=20

=20

=20

=20

We docked by the beautiful beach of a = very tiny island. I guess our captain was totally distracted by our presenc= e. Two young attractive ladies on the boat would distract anyone.=20

=20

=20

=20

And this sailor forgets to drop the an= chor. We jump off the boat and go for a swim, watching small cute sharks an= d stingrays. Total bliss?

=20

=20

=20

=20

Oh, no! The boat! Its drift= ing away!

=20

=20

=20

=20

We scream to alert our captain.=

=20

=20

=20

=20

Don?t worry, girls. I will = catch it.

=20

=20

=20

=20

He assures us. We get stranded on the = island with no phone, sun lotion, water, without anyone knowing we are here=

=20

=20

=20

=20

First hour was still entertaining. We = were swimming, exploring the island and joking. Our male companion even dar= ed to offer us to spend time on the island in a more interesting way. We declined his offer swearing = at him mentioning all his family and relatives. It was about noon time. The= heat of the sun began to burn our skin. Cooling off in a water was a short= relief making things worse later on. We had big hopes that someone would f= ind us before we turn into red boiled crabs. No help was coming, because no= one knew we were out there.

=20

=20

=20

=20

5 hours later a boat appeared on a horizon. Like Tom Hanks in ?C= astaway?, we were jumping, waving and screaming to draw the attention.<= /span>

=20

=20

=20

=20

Suddenly Alina and I froze in horror with darkest scenarios on o= ur mind. A small boat with about a dozen of young men was approaching our i= sland.

=20

=20

=20

=20

?This is it? we will die here, and no = one will know. They will rape us and kill us here?? these thoughts were rac= ing through my head. ?At least I die on a beautiful island? an optimistic p= art of me was trying to cheer me up.

=20

=20

=20

=20

-Shit, Nastya, we are going to die= ! They will kill us!

=20

=20

=20

=20

My beautiful blond friend was repeatin= g herself.

=20

=20

=20

=20

-Hey, have no fear my friend! We a= re Ukrainians, we don?t give up easily. Grab that spiky sea shell and we wo= n?t make it easy for them to get us, we will bloody fight them.=

=20

=20

=20

=20

(pffff, brave Ukrainian warriors with sea shells, how pathetic)<= /a>

=20

=20

=20

=20

I stepped closer to my friend and sque= ezed beautiful pink conch in my hand, preparing for the worse.

= =20

=20

=20

=20

Saying good bye to my family and prayi= ng to God.

=20

=20

=20

=20

It was our lucky day. Staff from our hotel decided to go play fo= otball on this island. They were very kind and friendly. They shared with u= s water and some snacks. We watched fascinating sunset. A skyline splashed = with the most beautiful colors I have ever seen on the horizon. The boat ow= ner arrived and brought us back to the hotel, before it got dark. A full re= fund was offered as a compensation for the trip that went terribly wrong. I= nstead we left some tips for him and his ?genius? captain, thanking for the= adventure. A life memory added to my collection.

=20

=20

=20

=20

It was time to return back to Dubai. Buttered with Aloe Vera coo= ling gel, we got cosy in the business class seats. For days dry burned skin= (that was peeling off like snake scale) would remind us of the unforgettab= le experience on Maaminglii.

=20

=20

=20

=20

I would love to get stranded again on an island, but this time w= ith a handsome Robinson Crusoe instead.
