SciMindHave you heard of Sci-Mind™?

Sci-Mind™, the new training product from the ACS Department of Professional Education, is a revolutionary and innovative learning community designed to challenge chemists to continuously invest in their professional scientific development. It combines the best aspects of social networking, knowledge sharing, and blended learning to offer professional scientists an interactive and engaging environment that meets their professional training needs. Through a customized six-week learning solution, learners will set their own training plans and upon conclusion be able to explicitly see which learning objectives and new skills they have achieved. Sci-Mind™ is self-paced and not time-zone sensitive, perfect for an international scientist who wishes to invest in high quality training from the American Chemical Society. The next cohort in Separation Science begins September 4. For more information visit www.ProEd.acs.org.

GCI PhotoInternational Students Attend the ACS Summer School on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Energy

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from across Pan America teamed up as part of the ACS Summer School on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Energy at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, from June 25-July 2. This was the 10th year of the Summer School, which was sponsored by the ACS Petroleum Research Fund. The fifty-five students selected were a cross-section of chemists and chemical engineers already very passionate about green chemistry and engineering and primed for the summer school’s intensive one-week learning experience.

The ACS Summer School on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Energy provides a unique opportunity for students to network beyond their labs and campuses, affording an informal environment for students to discuss their research with their peers, some whom travelled from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Uruguay and Puerto Rico. The opportunity to exchange ideas as part of a global green chemistry community served to enrich the educational and professional experiences of the summer school participants.

Summer school instructors covered topics including chemistry in the 21st century, the principles of sustainable chemistry and engineering, Life Cycle Analysis, bio-inspired nanotechnology, greener solvents, renewable energy, and green chemistry in the pharmaceutical industry. Students also learned about ACS career resources and strategies for writing successful proposals. The majority of summer school students planned on entering industry, followed by academic careers. Many students commented on the summer school’s value in providing real-world green chemistry and engineering applications as well as the accompanying challenges.

Visit ACS' Green Chemistry Institute website to learn more about other opportunities and programs.
