Why do so many people turn a blind eye to what is about to happen to our nation? It's because we have grown to accept that the future is going to be a scary place. And we are not ready for it.

Most of the roads in these featurettes were just waypoints to  destinations, but in this segment the star is the road itself: the newly completed Pennsylvania Turnpike. Did it really add "new zest to your driving " as this short suggests? In 1951 it probably did.

Among the "vacation thrills" visited by the on-screen family along the Turnpike is a mysterious bubbling lake (Tipster "Wednesday Addams" points out that this is probably Boiling Springs near Carlisle), a statue of Revolutionary War heroine Molly Pitcher, and the obscure Fort Necessity. No mention of the Giant Coffee Pot in Bedford, or any other Roadside-y attraction that superhighways like the Turnpike were built to bypass.

This is a beautiful state park just outside of the shopping area. If you need to escape the madness of LL Bean, head over to the park for an easy 2.25 mile hike around the park. Pass through pine forest and beautiful, rocky Maine coastline. The park ranger was so so so nice, too. Totally worth the small entry
