Apple will take a significant step toward disclosing more of its artificial intelligence research this week by becoming a member of a non-profit AI research consortium founded by five of the tech industrys biggest players. Last September, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and IBM publicly announced The Partnership on AI, an organisation established to study and formulate best practices, to advance the publics understanding of AI, and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement about AI and its influences on people and society. Apple is changing the screen technology that goes into its iPhones, and its Asian suppliers are fiercely competing to win the large contracts to build tens of millions of screens. Although recent Apple rumors have surrounded OLED, a next-generation screen technology with deeper blacks, Japan Display, a current Apple supplier, says that its new, competing flexible liquid-crystal-display panel

technology will be ready by 2018. In fact, Apple is looking at the new bendable LCD technology for future iPhone models, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. The bendable LCD technology may be able to be bent or curved around the edges of a phone, like Samsungs Galaxy Edge line of devices, which is a design that Apple is expected to implement in future models. That isnt possible with current LCDs, which requires a piece of glass. Apple is expected to launch a redesigned iPhone this fall that uses a new OLED screen as its centerpiece. Rumors from analysts and media suggest that it will have slim bezels, wireless charging, and its fingerprint sensor integrated under the screen. Samsung won the contract to be Apples sole OLED supplier earlier this year, but its rivals, including Japan Display, are still fighting to build the capacity to supply Apple in 2018 and going forward. That suggests if there arent enough OLED screens, Apple might decide to go with a different technology after the so-called iPhone 8. Aside from Japan Display, Foxconn subsidiary Sharp is also in the running to build iPhone screens. Foxconns chairman talked about building a US display plant in public earlier this week. Sharps CEO has described Apples struggle to secure enough screens as a crisis. We dont know whether Apples OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesnt walk down this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It is a crisis but it is also an opportunity, Sharp President Tai Jeng-Wu said in November.

If you own a pair of AirPods, inevitably, one is going to go missing. Fortunately, Apple is releasing some basic measures to help you find a lost earbud, if not the entire case. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is adding AirPods support to the Find My iPhone app with the release of iOS 10.3, which is supposed to launch to the public in the coming weeks. Inside the app, AirPods owners will be able to see either the current or last known location of their headphones (although it seems like Apple will determine that based on where the case was last seen, not the actual earbuds). That location data is going to be pretty broad, so it’ll really only be good for confirming whether your AirPods are at home or got left behind at work or a coffee shop it’s not granular enough to say where within your home they might be. To help out with the trickier issue of locating missing headphones that have been separated from their case, Apple is able to blast sound out of each earbud (so long as it has some remaining power). That’s by no means an assurance that you’ll find a lost earbud, especially if you drop it outside, but it could be pretty helpful if one goes missing around the house. It’s good to see Apple release something like this, as there was obviously a demand for it. Someone created a “find my AirPods app shortly after the earbuds were released but Apple pulled the app from its App Store for unstated reasons. That app actually went a step further in trying to help you locate a lost earbud, using Bluetooth signal strength to let you know if you’re getting warmer or colder in your search for the missing device. It wasn’t a perfect method either, but it may have been a helpful option if blasting music out of them isn’t working.>bR?>br?
