The common skin growth called a skin tag, or acrochordon, usually develops in folds of skin and causes little to no harm. Still, these growths can be irritating, and doctors can easily remove them. Skin tags can appear smooth or irregular, and may attach to the skin by a short, narrow stalk called a "peduncle." Doctors don't know for certain what causes tags, but skin rubbing against skin may play a role, since the growths usually occur among skin folds — in the armpits, neck and groin, and sometimes on eyelids. Some studies show an association between skin tags and low-risk forms of of human papilloma virus (HPV), so those viruses may help cause the growths. Additionally, the condition seems to run in families, so doctors suspect a genetic component. Skin tags appear commonly, affecting about 45 percent of the population. They tend to happen more frequently among older people, women, the overweight and those with diabetes. Because tags are benign, they usually don't require treatment. However, patients may find the growths irritating when they rub against clothes, or simply dislike their appearance. In those cases, doctors can remove the tags with a surgical knife, or through freezing or burning (cauterization). How are lentigines treated? There are several methods for treating lentigines:
Cryotherapy (freezing it off) Laser surgery Creams that are applied to the skin (These include retinoids and bleaching agents.) Can lentigines be prevented? The best way to prevent lentigines is to stay out of the sun as much as possible. Use sunscreen when outdoors, and avoid using a tanning bed to get a suntan.
What are freckles? Freckles are small brown spots usually found on the face and arms. Freckles are extremely common and are not a health threat. They are more often seen in the summer, especially among lighter-skinned people and people with light or red hair. However, freckles can occur in anyone, and appear as darker brown spots in people with darker skin. Both men and women get freckles at an equal rate. What causes freckles? Causes of freckles include genetics, diseases (such as xeroderma pigmentosum, a rare disease that causes an increased sensitivity to ultraviolet light, such as the sun), and exposure to the sun.
What is the treatment for freckles? Since freckles are almost always harmless, there really is no need to treat them. As with many skin conditions, it’s best to avoid the sun as much as possible, or use a sunscreen. This is especially important because people who freckle easily (such as lighter-skinned people) are more likely to develop skin cancer. If you feel that your freckles are a problem or you don’t like the way they look, you can cover them up with makeup. What are seborrheic keratoses? Seborrheic keratoses are brown or black growths usually found on the chest and back, as well as on the head. They originate from cells called keratinocytes. As they develop, seborrheic keratoses take on a warty appearance. What causes seborrheic keratoses? The cause of seborrheic keratoses is unknown. They are seen more often as people get older. They do not lead to skin cancer. How are seborrheic keratoses treated? Seborrheic keratoses are benign and are not contagious. Therefore, they don’t need to be treated. If you decide to have seborrheic keratoses removed because you don’t like the way they look, or because they are chronically irritated by clothing, methods for removing them include cutting them off, cryotherapy, and electrosurgery. Can seborrheic keratoses be prevented? Seborrheic keratoses can’t be prevented. During the holiday season, we love seeing gift tags on presents both sent and received. Skin tags, though? Not so much. Which is why we’re breaking down what causes them and how to best (and safely!) remove them. a dermatologist and the director of Mohs Micrographic Surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, tells Allure that what we call skin tags are really just benign skin lesions composed of normal skin tissue. Adds Joshua Zeichner, dermatologist in New York City, skin tags, comprised of extra skin and fat, can happen to anyone, though there is a genetic component to them as well, and people whose parents had them are more likely to get them themselves.

But most importantly, Nguyen emphasizes, “They are not dangerous.” Nguyen explains that skin tags can turn up on any area of the skin that’s heavy on the friction—from eyelids to underarms and from the neck to the groin. She adds that genetic disposition, obesity, and pregnancy all might cause the development of the skin cases, though in rare cases, they can also be caused by diabetes. (Which is why if in doubt, have a doctor check it out.) How Do You Get Rid Of Them? Zeichner makes clear that your friendly skin tags can be removed in just a few simple steps at your dermatologist’s office: First comes the numbing, usually in the form of a tiny needle prick’s worth of lidocaine Next, the spot is either snipped off with a medical grade scissor And last but not least, a chemical or cautery device (aka, an electric buzzer) will be used to stop any bleeding Alternately, some docs might take the following course of action: A topical numbing cream will be applied first Liquid nitrogen will be applied to the tag to freeze it off And sometimes, you might see some combination or variation on all of the above, with cautery being used to burn off spots directly, after topical or injected numbing is first applied. How Do You Prevent Them? Reducing skin friction—like, not wearing necklaces that can rub on the skin—can help keep new tags from developing, says Nguyen, who adds that removed skin tags don’t typically grow back, though new ones may grow in the same general area where tags have previously popped up. Zeichner recommends that you not try to remove skin tags at home yourself since they can bleed upon removal and become infected without proper precaution and explains that at-home treatments are not very effective at treating large tags and can cause significant irritation. And while removal of tags in a doctor’s office is often not covered by insurance, and can cost between $200 to $500 to remove them, Zeichner says he advises to discuss any skin tags with a board-certified dermatologist to come up with a removal plan that works for you. The good news? A healthy diet and lifestyle can help keep blood sugar level low, which can help prevent skin tags from forming.
