I am quite aware that some= of you, and I hope only a few, are now firmly ensconced at BEA. And f= or those of you who have gone, you have purchased a Hall ticket and no= t taken a very expensive booth.

And just in case y= ou missed my reasoning to be one of the SELLERS:

I am fortunate to have a n= umber of small publishers and lines available for sale. And frankly, a= combination of economic factors and political factors has me quite co= ncerned. And concerned enough that I would like to have ALL of my client sales done by the end of the summer.

What factors? Well, most o= f you don’t want to hear what I am going to discuss… sinc= e somehow I am always being political and should shut up, but I have a= Tax CPA background combined with a solid understanding of internation= al finance and currency… and this IS MY newsle= tter…

Economic factors… I= see three more Fed interest rate hikes this year… at least two= but if things begin to unravel, they will have to hit a third to keep= things somewhat in order. The disarray of the Congress is making not = only insurance companies crazy, but companies in many industries very = concerned with their futures.

Political factors… = I have already discussed my concerns over the possible push to loosen = the libel laws… and to further tighten censorship in the media.= And by the way folks… publishing is one of the media, just in = case you think you will somehow be exempt.

And, as this whole politic= al world is starting to unravel, it not only impacts the governance of= the country, but the confidence of the citizenry that the government = can continue to govern. This has serious implications in terms of gett= ing legislation passed… and it also has severe potential econom= ic circumstances like a weakening of the dollar… which means ov= erseas printing will cost 5%, 20%, or 50% more.

So, in 100 words or less&h= ellip; if you have been thinking of selling a line, or the whole compa= ny… this would be the time. Prices for publishing companies are= almost at full retail… those who are profitable are at full va= lue… The stock market is crazy and is allowing lots of money to= flow… so if I were you, I would be reaching up and grabbing al= l the money I could… putting it away somewhere safe… gol= d, silver, Swiss francs… until the insanity has passed… = and then make your next life move.

And just in case y= ou missed my reasoning to be one of the BUYERS:

Most of us in the U.S. are= getting nervous about our futures. This includes business owners. If = you are OT one of these nervous people, then you get to take advantage= of those who are.

Prices are very reasonable= at least for the current group of companies and lines I am representi= ng. These are mostly people who ARE nervous and are somewhat negotiabl= e as to getting out.

Funding for purchases, and= for some of these, you hardly need it, but funding is still available= for the smaller deals… from your house, from your bank, from c= ash flow.

Three great reasons to mak= e acquisitions, since in my opinion, growth through acquisition is far= superior to growth through publish and pray. You know what you are ge= tting and what it is going to cost you. There are no surprises in acqu= isitions as there are in publish and pray.

1.= Small educational publisher.= I have a small educational publisher who specializes in earl= y reading and math for sale. I have mentioned the company before and t= hey are willing to sell the whole small company at once or sell off th= eir titles individually. The owners want to retire now, and are not re= ally interested in a long term buy out. Just to retire. For the whole = company, under $75,000.

2. Primarily Trave= l Guide Books. I also= have a 25 year old small publisher specializing in travel guide books= … US, Europe, everywhere… about 40 titles… (And t= here are a dozen books in other areas that can be included or separate= d.) The whole company will go right around $200,000…. Could go = in the high 180’s-190’s… if you move quickly.

3. Genealogy Books= . From the company ab= ove, 8-10 titles current. Pricing would be in the $25,000 range. Conta= ct me for more on this.

5. Directory Curre= ntly Dormant. I have = a professional directory that was active for roughly 20 years, with a = premier name in the field that has gone dormant for the last four. Whe= n it was last active, it was sold, and the new owner simply didn&rsquo= ;t have the time and energy to look after it and let it go dormant. Th= ere won’t be much in the way of records or back up… but a= gain, the price, which has been a discussion, would be primarily for t= he goodwill of the name, about 15,000 listings in the directory, a ver= y short buyer list, advertiser list, and other files.

Pricing is $9,500 on closi= ng and 10% of revenues for two years.

6. Nine Book Serie= s Very Similar to Harry Potter. I have a very fascinating series of books… very, ver= y much in the format and writing and style of Harry Potter, except wri= tten to a higher level, well-illustrated, and really a more teen/adult= version based on reading level. This was written in three trilogies&h= ellip; nine books total. Many are now in print, self-pub, and a few ar= e in production phase, ready to print. The author is looking for $45,0= 00 for all including all current inventory of those already in print&h= ellip; plus a downline royalty.

Let me make a comment here= . I missed acquiring the rights to Harry Potter in Canada by about a w= eek back in the day. Of course, were I that smart and snagged those ri= ghts… I would have been a reasonably wealthy man. If I were sti= ll an active publisher with staff and a pipeline… I would take = this series and turn it into a 5% version of Harry Potter… 5% o= f a Billion dollars… $50 Million… so you only need to do= 5% as well as H.P. to make a huge hit. I have had two companies revie= w and hold these books for a while… but neither wanted to make = the commitment. I still don’t get it.

8. Civil War Infor= mation Records Books. And what a treasure trove. The publisher hasn’t yet been able t= o give me a clean count of the total number of titles, records of fami= lies, battles, chronologies, you name it. So far we are up to = about 1,200 titles. ALL physical. This is an opportunity to a= dd to your Civil War line and to create over a thousand eBooks if that= is your thing.

9. Classics Books.= 47 year-old publishe= r of classics in philosophy and metaphysics. Its portfolio is about a = dozen titles by Kant, Descartes, Hobbs, etc. These are titles not= offered by any other publisher and are unique scholarly volumes with = a facsimile of the original (Latin, German, etc.) verso and a= n authoritative English translation-of-that-page recto.

10. Art Reference = Books. 47 year-old sc= holarly art reference book publisher with a list of over 200 art refer= ence books and multi-volume sets in print with a customer list upwards= of 1,000 buyers. They have the authoritative, definitive, 110 title (= so far), pictorial encyclopedia of European master prints.

We have not yet determined= pricing for these two companies… and again, let me know of you= r interest, and as soon as we have final numbers, you will be top of t= he list to make the acquisition. We are confident that #9 will be well= under $100,000., and #10, frankly, will depend on their closing 2016 = and current 2017 numbers.

11. Cyber Security= & Risk Management Books. Not a great deal of concrete info about this publisher, but a= gain, if you have an interest, I will follow up as soon as I have all = the details.

12. MISCELLANEOUS = INDIVIDUAL TITLES. No= rmally, I don’t handle individual titles, but since we are doing= this big promotion, and offering a group of lower priced lines and co= mpanies for sale… I figure why not? Each title is available on = its own… they are NOT related. Each of these titles should sell= for under $5,000 for rights, plus if wanted, inventory. These are neg= otiable.

   =        A) Art Instruction for those who want to draw/paint bu= t have no formal training. Book has decent history and author is willi= ng to update if needed.

    &n= bsp;     B) True Memoir of Hiding in Berli= n During WWII interesting true story of a Jew who has to surv= ive the war stuck in Berlin… currently being put out for movie = rights… and it might just make it.

    &n= bsp;     C) Education of Infants = new methods of instructing very young children to learn, be well advan= ced of other children. Author’s personal experience is quite imp= ressive.

    &n= bsp;     D) Collaborative Project Manageme= nt If you know what this is, then you know this is a new area= of Management and I have a book proposal from a prolific author who i= s looking for a place for this new project to land.
