Martin Foner’s Publishing Newslette= r

A GREAT LIST OF PUBLISHERS FO= R SALE

THIRTEEN UNDER $100,000&helli= p;

SEVEN FROM $100,000 TO A MILL= ION+…

Volume 22, Number 11

Hello, Everyone…

I am quite aware that some= of you, and I hope only a few, are now firmly ensconced on vacation. = And for those of you who have gone, it is well worth your while to rea= d this newsletter.

This quick newsletter will= feature a number of titles, lines, and a few publishers available rig= ht now for UNDER $100,000. And, it will feature some companies over $1= 00,000 and if memory serves, one over a Million dollars. If you are in= the market to expand your list, grow your company, and you’re i= nterested in making money… then take ten minutes and see who fi= ts into your Strategic Plan.

Then, contact me i= mmediately… mfoner@npl= consult.com .

MY REG= ULAR INFORMATIONAL NEWSLETTER WILL BE SENT NEXT WEEK… SO DON&rs= quo;T MISS IT!

And just in case y= ou missed my reasoning to be one of the SELLERS:

I am fortunate to have a n= umber of publishers and lines available for sale. And frankly, a combi= nation of economic factors and political factors has me quite concerne= d. And concerned enough that I would like to have ALL= of my client sales done by the end of the summer, or at worst into th= e fall.

What factors? Well, most o= f you don’t want to hear what I am going to discuss… sinc= e somehow I am always being political and should shut up, but I have a= Tax CPA background combined with a solid understanding of internation= al finance and currency… and this IS MY newsle= tter…

Economic factors… I= see two more Fed interest rate hikes this year… we just got on= e… so we are on schedule for this smack in the head reality. Th= e disarray of the Congress is making not only insurance companies craz= y, but companies in many industries very concerned with their own futu= res. The stock market might be way up, but unless yours is a listed co= mpany… you have potential issues of survival.

Political factors… = I have already discussed my concerns over the possible push to loosen = the libel laws… and to further tighten censorship in the media.= And by the way folks… publishing is one of the media, just in = case you think you will somehow be exempt.

And, as this whole politic= al world is starting to unravel, it not only impacts the governance of= the country, but the confidence of the citizenry that the government = can continue to govern. This has serious implications in terms of gett= ing legislation passed… (notice it yet?) AND it also has severe= potential economic circumstances like a weakening of the dollar&helli= p; which means overseas printing will cost 5%, 20%, or 50% more. Just = in the last 3-4 weeks, the US/Canadian dollar spread has reduced in U.= S. dollar value by almost 6%.

So, in 100 words or less&h= ellip; if you have been thinking of selling a line, or the whole compa= ny… this would be the time. Prices for publishing companies are= almost at full retail… those who are profitable are at full va= lue… The stock market is crazy and is allowing lots of money to= flow… so if I were you, I would be reaching up and grabbing al= l the money I could… putting it away somewhere safe… gol= d, silver, Swiss francs… until the insanity has passed… = and then make your next life move.

So, if you have thought ab= out selling, OR, are interested in buying… contact me at mfoner@nplconsult.com= and I will ask a few questions and provide you a complimentary &ldquo= ;ballpark” value for your line or company. If you like the numbe= r range, or can live with it, then we can represent you in the marketp= lace.

Newsletters, targeted emai= l to my list of private buyers, and to ‘interested buyers’= , advertisements in publishing venues, and maybe even something in the= NYT or LAT… Pub Mktplace or PW… depending on how quickl= y the lines and companies sell.

And just in case y= ou missed my reasoning to be one of the BUYERS:

Most of us in the U.S. are= getting nervous about our futures. This includes business owners. If = you are NOT one of these nervous people, then you get to take advantag= e of those who are.

Prices are very reasonable= at least for the current group of companies and lines I am representi= ng and what I am seeing in the marketplace. While some are ready to re= tire or liquidate what they have, others are well priced and just feel= the time is right. But, there are lots of great deals nonetheless.

There is some owner financ= ing available on the larger sales. However, if you can’t handle = $25,000… then you should wait for the next newsletter on becomi= ng more profitable, and skip the buying for now.

Three great reasons to mak= e acquisitions, since in my opinion, 1) growth through acquisition is = far superior to growth through publish and pray, 2) you know what you = are getting and what it is going to cost you, and 3) there are no surp= rises in acquisitions as there are in publish and pray circumstances.<= /span>

I won’t repe= at it with every listing, but do contact me asap if you have an intere= st… these listings often go quickly and silently.

I closed two deals= at the end of June that never even hit the market... they were privat= ely handled sales and done in ten days to two weeks.

I am working on a = deal now, ready to close… it was on the ‘market’ fo= r about a week, maybe, and the first inquiry became the Buyer… = so don’t wait.

If you have an int= erest… Contact me at m= foner@nplconsult.com today!

1. Midwest US Mont= hly Regional Magazine… With a religious bend but not overly deep… more commun= ity than overly religious. In business over 20 years and profitable. A= dvertising revenues of $200,000… Nets $80K+… Ask= ing $200,000. Excellent opportunity to branch out for a relig= ious publisher, a Midwest publisher, or anyone wanting to create a str= ong net profit stream from a minimal investment. This will go very qui= ckly, I predict.

2. Mid Sized Non-F= iction focused in Business, Self-Improvement, Health & Wellness&he= llip; Very strong fro= nt and back list, over 450 titles, and strong pipeline for new titles&= hellip; over 75 in the pipe. Ten year old company… growth every= year, profits growing. 2017 will do over $600K and net $300K. Asking $1,450,000… but will wait til 3Q figures out t= o confirm and sell. Could be done in $1.2 - $1.3MM zone if quick and c= ash. Seller will finance up to 1/3 of price for three years max.

3. Civil War Infor= mation Records Books. And what a treasure trove this is. The publisher was finally able to = give me a reasonably clean count of the total number of titles, record= s of families, battles, chronologies, you name it. So far we a= re up to about 1,500+ titles. ALL physical. This is an opport= unity to add to your Civil War line and to create over 1,500 eBooks if= that is your thing as there are ZERO at present. Revenues are around = $30K, net around $25K. Inventory is close to $70K. Asking on this one = includes the value of having over 1,500 titles in Civil War informatio= n and the potential inherent in eBooks… Asking $249,000= .

4. Primarily Trave= l Guide Books… I have a 25 year old small publisher specializing in travel guide boo= ks… US, Europe, everywhere… about 40 titles… (And= there are a dozen books in other areas that can be included or separa= ted, see #5 and #6.) The whole company could go in the high 130’= s to mid 140’s… if you move quickly. Or, just purchase th= e travel related books for about $100,000 clean.

5. Genealogy Books= … From the com= pany above, 8-10 titles current. Pricing would be in the $25,0= 00 range.

6. Career Search B= ooks… From the= company above, 4 titles in job search. Pricing would be in the $15,000 range.

7. Media Planning&= hellip; texts and fie= ld guides, in biz for 20+ years… strong repeat sales by edition= . Net for one man show is historically $43K… now up in 2016 and= 2017 to mid 50’sK. Three titles, basic inventory, long customer= list… asking $195,000.

8. Children’= s Publisher, almost dormant… last three years no activity except order taking on sit= e. Roughly 35 solid, beautifully done children’s titles from wel= l-known children’s publisher name. Still waiting on actual reven= ues and cost of inventory, but taking names for interest in acquiring.= If as I believe, likely to sell in the $50,000 range= .

9. Green Construct= ion… text and = field book for ‘green’ construction, very current, 2016 &c= opy;. Publisher can’t seem to gain traction and needs a new home= where it will fit the line of the publisher better. Inventory of roug= hly 3,500 units and rights to title, asking $10,000.<= /span>

10. Gambling Publi= sher, dormant… Not active for a while, owns seven titles plus distributed about 25 t= itles. Inventory, which is old, is main asset, is over $50,000 at prin= t or discounted distributor cost. Also about 15,000 copies of a gambli= ng newsletter, and a few domain names. Asking $19,000., negoti= able.

11. Romance Publis= her, almost dormant… Still doing some business… expected to close up at end o= f 2016, returned rights to many titles but still holds rights to dozen= s of titles, plus domain names. Even not promoting, expected 2017 reve= nues at $7,500 and net at $5,000. Some physical inventory, about $3K, = but all have been done as eBooks. Some future title commitments and so= me books could be resurrected. Asking $24,000., negotiable.

12. Classics Books= … 47 year-old = publisher of classics in philosophy and metaphysics. Its portfolio is = about a dozen titles by Kant, Descartes, Hobbs, etc. These are titles&= nbsp;not offered by any other publisher and are unique scholarly volum= es with a facsimile of the original (Latin, German, etc.) verso and an authoritative English translation-of-that-page recto. Asking $95,000, but somewhat negotiable.

13. Art Reference = Books… 47 year= -old scholarly art reference book publisher with a list of over 200 ar= t reference books and multi-volume sets in print with a customer list = upwards of 1,000 buyers. They have the authoritative, definitive, 110 = title (so far), pictorial encyclopedia of European master pri= nts. Asking $199,000 primarily inventory based but re= asonable revenues.

14. Small educational publisher= . I have a small educational publisher who specializes in ear= ly reading and math for sale. I have mentioned the company before and = they are willing to sell the whole small company at once or sell off t= heir titles individually. The owners want to retire now, and are not r= eally interested in a long term buy out. Just to retire. For the whole= company, asking $55,000.

They are willing to sell o= ff individual titles, so request a list of them.

15. Directory, Dor= mant. I have a profes= sional directory that was active for roughly 20 years, with a premier = name in the field that has gone dormant for the last four. When it was= last active, it was sold, and the new owner simply didn’t have = the time and energy to look after it and let it go dormant. There won&= rsquo;t be much in the way of records or back up… but again, th= e price, which has been a discussion, would be primarily for the goodw= ill of the name, about 15,000 listings in the directory, a very short = buyer list, advertiser list, and other files.

Asking is $9,500 on closing and 10% of = revenues for two years.

16. Nine Book Seri= es Very Similar to Harry Potter. I have a very fascinating series of books… very, ve= ry much in the format and writing and style of Harry Potter, except wr= itten to a higher level, well-illustrated, and really a more teen/adul= t version based on reading level. This was written in three trilogies&= hellip; nine books total. Many are now in print, self-pub, and a few a= re in production phase, ready to print. The author is asking $= 45,000 for all including all current inventory of those alrea= dy in print… plus a downline royalty.

17. Mystery & = Thriller Books, mostly. I also have an interesting company, in business for a few years, wi= th almost 150 titles, many in thriller, mystery, some western, and a s= mattering of non-fiction. Most are in ebook format and some are dual, = ebook and physical. Sales are increasing toward 100K. Profits are, obv= iously, strong on this but this company’s primary interest is in= selecting books for filmmaking. They are happy to consider an arrange= ment where they keep bringing titles to the new owner as long as they = can work the film rights. They are asking roughly $295,000 plus a downline percentage/royalty to be determined.

MISCELLANEOUS INDI= VIDUAL TITLES. Normal= ly, I don’t handle individual titles, but since we are doing thi= s big promotion, and offering a group of lower priced lines and compan= ies for sale… I figure why not? Each title is available on its = own… they are NOT related. Each of these titles should = sell for under $5,000 for rights, plus if wanted, inventory. = These are negotiable.

18. Art Instructio= n for those who want = to draw/paint but have no formal training. Book has decent history and= author is willing to update if needed.

19. True Memoir of= Hiding in Berlin During WWII interesting true story of a Jew who has to survive the war st= uck in Berlin… currently being put out for movie rights…= and it might just make it.

20. Collaborative = Project Management If= you know what this is, then you know this is a new area of Management= and I have a book proposal from a prolific author who is looking for = a place for this new project to land.

Well, for the mome= nt, this is the list.

If you have intere= st in any of these or in other topics, let me know at = mfoner@nplconsult.com, and I will keep my eyes and ears open for yo= ur requirements.
