Martin Foner’s Publishing Newslette= r

Because You’re Serious = About Success… or You’re Not

Volume 23, Number 1

WELCOME TO 2018… ARE Y= OU READY FOR SUCCESS?

HERE ARE A DOZEN PUBLISHERS F= OR SALE, MOST AT A DISCOUNT TO VALUE, TO BE SOLD BY THE END OF MARCH, = 2018

Hello, Everyone&he= llip;

Welcome to my 23rd year of publishing this newsletter. It is an honor to still be wri= ting and having readers reach out after every issue… and it mus= t be a testament to the quality of the information I work very hard to= include in my newsletters.

THE NEXT REGULAR N= EWSLETTER WILL BE SENT JANUARY 30TH.

This will be a short and 1= 00% selling newsletter… that is, I am representing a number of = publishing businesses that should have been sold at the end of 2017&he= llip; but are still available in January of 2018.

Please take a serious look= … a number are almost dormant and the almost free pricing is re= flective of that. You can pick up a dozen or two dozen current titles = for less than the cost of production. Others were in negotiations at t= he end of the year and somehow fell out, and are excellent buys&hellip= ; a couple have been priced reduced.

All but one company is UNDER $250,000. The more expensive one has been price re= duced by almost $500,000! Really… quick inspections, quick clos= ings, and most importantly, quick recovery of investment!

Why not commit to moving f= orward in 2018 by making a very tiny, or a medium sized, acquisition t= hat will help to boost your revenues for 2018? All of these companies = can be ‘closed’ before March 31, offering you at least NIN= E selling months in 2018. Don’t miss the boat!

As always, if you are inte= rested, email me IMMEDIATELY at mfoner@nplconsult.com. I will send you an NDA to complete. When= I get it back, we will be ready to go to work on the publisher for sa= le.

#1= Mid Sized Non-Fiction= focused in Business, Self-Improvement, Health & Wellness… = Very strong front and back list, over 450 titles, approaching= 500 titles… and strong pipeline for new titles… over 75= in the pipe, and 35 more in negotiation/development. Ten year old com= pany… growth every year, profits growing.

2017 did over $600K and ne= tted right at $400K. Asking $995,000… Could be= done at a little less if quick and cash. Otherwise, Seller will finan= ce up to 1/3 of price for three years max. In California, but can relo= cate anywhere. Minimal staff of two… all freelance, minimal inv= entory, mostly digital and rest is primarily POD. A one person managem= ent operation. Seller is moving on for personal reasons.

This will sell at 2.5X&hel= lip; for a growing revenue and profit company in business 10 years, th= is is a bargain. Simply, the Seller has said he feels the need to move= on and will sell for this figure for a Spring sale.

#2.  Busy, bu= t Slowing Down 40+ Year Old Publisher in the Animal Field… Dogs= and Horses… H= as been around since the late 1970s… well known for a few very = strong titles… one has sold over 400,000 copies in five edition= s over the years! Other backlist has sold 20,000 to 60,000 copies hist= orically, and others less, but makes for solid backlist revenue.

Profits have been (last fo= ur years) average $65K a year… the Seller, not realizing the gr= eat opportunity to sell the company, decided to close the company in J= uly of 2017 and started to liquidate inventory and not do marketing. I= recently came on board to help salvage a good publisher from the ashe= s of closing.

Revenue for fiscal year is= $100K… net profit is $30K.

Asking $125,000. <= /span>4X profits, even reduc= ed profits, is reasonable for a 40 year track record and a number of s= olid backlists and one amazing backlist title.

Inventory is being rapidly= depleted and Seller is doing short runs to keep stock… not a w= ay to run a company… so a quick sale here is a bonus for both p= arties to keep the order flow going and revenues flowing in. This one = needs to close by March 31st, and at $125K, it won’t = be on the market very long. Brand new listing for me and I expect it t= o go fast!

#3.  <= /strong>Civil War Information= Records Books. And w= hat a treasure trove this is. The publisher was finally able to give m= e a reasonably clean count of the total number of titles, records of f= amilies, battles, chronologies, you name it. So far we are up = to over 1,500 titles. Most digital and a few dozen physical. =

This is an amazing opportu= nity to add to your Civil War line and to create/market over 1,500 eBo= oks if that is your thing. Or, create and market over 1,500 physical. = Bonus is there are roughly 300 titles waiting to be ‘produced&rs= quo; by primary author, putting this deal at over 1,800 titles! Revenu= es are around $30K, net around $25K. Inventory is close to $70K. Askin= g on this one includes the value of having over 1,500 titles in Civil = War information and the potential inherent in physical and eBooks&hell= ip; Asking $249,000.

I admit the excellent orde= rliness of a normal publisher isn’t here, but the titles are and= the revenues are and will be once they are up on Amazon and marketed,= and someone in Civil War or Genealogy of the times or History of the = South… will make a sh*tload of money with a little bit of organ= ization. (Hey, if 45 can say it, so can I.)

#4. Travel Guide B= ooks…Almost Dormant… BUT the BIG DEAL here is if you acquire= this company you get distribution through Simon & Schuster for th= ese and any other titles you may have. Is this a big deal? It made thi= s travel line work well for many years.

I have a 25 year old small publis= her specializing in travel guide books… US, Europe, everywhere&= hellip; about 40 titles… a few were updated and revised in 2017= , but the Seller assumed a closing that didn’t take place and go= t complacent. The back list is pretty far ranging… and even tho= ugh no marketing was done in 2017… Gross revenues were almost $= 60K, Net revenues were $30K and profits were over $20,000.

Asking originally was clos= e to $100K. We are now into 2018… 2.5X Net plus reasonably curr= ent inventory supports an Asking $75,000 … BUT… = I believe a quick cash sale could be done at $60,000.<= /p>

#5. Midwest US Bi-Monthly Commu= nity Religious Magazine… With a religious bend but foc= using more community than being overtly religious. In business over 20= years and very profitable. Advertising revenues of $200,000… N= ets $80K+… Asking $249,000. Excellent opportun= ity to branch out for a religious publisher, a Midwest publisher, news= paper, or newsletter company, or anyone wanting to create a strong net= profit stream from a minimal investment.

The publication for many y= ears was monthly… and its profit was OVER $100,000 a year! Sell= er has had medical issues and reduced it to bi-monthly and is still ma= king a great margin and net. For company in business this long with a = solid history, 3X is a bargain! And for those doing the math as a func= tion of gross advertising sales, the actual number is a bit over $210,= 000… so the Seller would consider an offer in the $210K range. =

This company may be under = contract in the next week, but until then, it is available to anyone w= ho can see the numbers, and might be willing to go back to a monthly p= rogram and drive the multiple down to 2X !

#6. Romance/Erotic= Fiction Publisher, Almost Dormant… Still doing business… another Seller who = had no idea of the value of the company for sale, and expected to clos= e up at end of 2016. Dozens of titles, plus domain names, doing small = business in 2017. Not doing any marketing, 2017 revenues were $10,000 = and netted at $5,000. Some physical inventory, about $3K, but all have= been done as eBooks. Some future title commitments and some books cou= ld be easily resurrected. Erotic fiction is a strong genre, as always&= hellip; Asking $24,000., negotiable.

#7.  <= /strong>Art Reference Books&h= ellip; 47 year-old sc= holarly art reference book publisher with THE NAME in= the field since the 1960s… a list of over 200 art reference bo= oks and multi-volume sets in print with a standing order customer list= upwards of 300, and a mailing list of 1,000 buyers. They have the aut= horitative, definitive, 110 title (so far), reference and pic= torial encyclopedia of European master artists. Asking $249,00= 0 based on $70K average net… 3.5X net. Inventory of $5= 00K at cost will be sold separately from this deal, but could be purch= ased as part of the main deal for $150K cash, or 5 years of payments a= t $40K.

If you know about the art = world, you know the name of this reference series as it is used worldw= ide in museums, galleries, universities, collectors, and anywhere the = need to know serious art is found.

An amazing opportunity to = acquire the name and reputation of the publication for a very excellen= t price. Seller is retiring and will be pleased to pass this stellar r= eputation along to a new buyer.

#8. Small Educational Publisher= .. Almost Dormant I h= ave a small educational publisher who specializes in remedial at high = school reading and math for sale. I have mentioned the company before = and they are willing to sell the whole small company at once or sell o= ff their titles individually. The owners want to retire now, and are n= ot really interested in a long term buy out. Just to retire. For the w= hole company, Asking $55,000.

We have two interested par= ties and see a closing by the end of February, but, as always, nothing= is set in stone until it is set in stone. This is an excellent opport= unity to acquire a nice remedial program full of titles and inventory = for virtually nothing.

The rest of these = are simply listed without much description… if you are interest= ed, let me know. Lengthy descriptions are becoming too much to have to= read at this point.

#9. Classics Books… Dorm= ant… 47 year-o= ld publisher of classics in philosophy and metaphysics. Its portfolio = is about a dozen titles by Kant, Descartes, Hobbs, etc. These are titl= es not offered by any other publisher and are unique scholarly vo= lumes with a facsimile of the original (Latin, German, etc.) verso= and an authoritative English translation-of-that-page recto<= /em>. No revenues in a few years, not promoted. Asking $49,000= , but somewhat negotiable… for the rights and titles. = A unique opportunity.

#10. Genealogy Tit= les… Almost Dormant… About 10 titles, very small revenues, not promoted at al= l… but reasonably current and saleable. Asking $15,000.=

#11. Career Titles= … Almost Dormant… A half dozen titles, small revenues, not promoted at all bu= t current and saleable. Asking $20,000.

#12. Mystery &= Thriller Books, mostly. I also have an interesting company, with almost 150 titles, many i= n thriller, mystery, some western, and a smattering of non-fiction. Mo= st are in ebook format. Sales are at $100K. Profits are about $50K.

But… this company&r= squo;s primary interest is in selecting books for filmmaking, as they = option and make the films. They are happy to consider an arrangement w= here they keep bringing titles to the new owner as long as they can wo= rk the film rights. They are asking roughly $249,000 = plus a downline percentage/royalty to be determined.

That’s all t= here is for now!
