Searching for jobs is an arduous task that can take a lot of time, however there are ways of shortening that effort. The majority of job hunters underestimate how useful their network of contacts can be and how they can use this network to extend their search to increase the chances of finding a job. With the development of online social networks, your personal collection of contacts is considerably larger than those of job hunters 10 years ago and should be fully utilized in your search for work. Understanding Your Network Each and every one of us has a large network of contacts, however most of us don't realize this. For instance, did you know that according to the Pew Research Center, the average American has approximately 634 contacts?

A strong professional network can introduce you to potential future employers, potential clients, trusted service providers and more. Need a new bookkeeper for your business? Turn to your network! (I just did this recently.) Want to get a job at Google but don't know where to start? Turn to your network! Who do you know at? Or who knows someone who knows someone at Google? Chances are pretty good that you're no more than two or three degrees of separation from any company you want to be a part of. The All-Important &ldquo;Know, Like and Trust&rdquo; Factor Again, I want to stress the critically important role of the &ldquo;know, like and trust&rdquo; factor in all of this. The only way you'll reap the rewards offered by your network is if the people in it truly know, like and trust you.

For instance, before I met with Prime Minister Abbott of Australia, I discovered that he is a fitness fanatic and closely follows Olympic swimming. This unique information helped me break the ice by inviting him to train with me and a few friends &ndash; including a close friend of mine who swam for Australia's Olympic team. After the small talk, the rest of the meeting went smoothly and we did indeed hit the gym the next morning (and, as an aside, the PM can do an impressive 10 pull-ups unassisted). Networking is not transactional, but too often it's approached in such a way. Play the long game and build the network for the sake of building the network. Early in my career, I offered to review a peer's business plan without any expectations about a job, compensation or even a cup of coffee in return. This encounter eventually landed me the position of CFO for this well-funded technology startup. Often times people miss opportunities to network because they feel intimidated, particularly if the other person is more senior. However, there is very little downside when aiming high, other than a bruised ego from time-to-time. The worst that can happen is they say &ldquo;no&rdquo; or ignore you. At that point, it is onward and upward
