Martin Foner’s Publishing Newslette= r

Red Flags & Open Up Your = Eyes… for 2019

Volume 23, Number 17

Hello, Everyone&he= llip;

Normally, I wouldn’t= send out a newsletter this close to the end of the year when people r= eally don’t want to read deep thoughts. BUT… this year, a= nd particularly the way it is ending economically, sends up red flag, = rings all the bells, and has large groups of economists, business peop= le, and rational thinking political people (yes there are still a few = of those… mostly hidden in corners out of sight of stable geniu= ses) all speaking in the same chorus.

This is rare. Even rarer, = in the middle of what is supposed to a relatively stable economy.

I have a few comments base= d on facts, stats, and my conversations with hundreds of business peop= le in the industry lately. Listen if you wish, but trash at your own p= eril. The last time I rang these bells of danger, gold went up 50% and= many readers did very well… thank you very much!!!

So, let’s be brief a= nd look at some FACTS:

  1. The Fed seems to know something we don’t or it w= ouldn’t have raised interest rates last week. No, we are not in = a recession, but they are making sure if/when it hits, THEY are not to= blame.

  1. As a prior financial and tax specialist, I know these = market gyrations are not just unusual, but well outside both norms and= realities for a market of this length of positivity. And bear markets= don’t just pop up one day and knock 2,500 points of the Dow for= the entertainment value without an ‘event’. Again, the ma= rket apparently has some event in mind.

  1. The current administration does not have a clue as to = how economics work, and frankly from some comments, doesn’t care= what happens beyond November of 2020. If we are to go by his gut, the= n a safe bet would be to buy McDonald’s stock. I am going to mak= e a statement here that has been echoed by many much smarter economist= s than myself… “This President has no clue how any financ= ial markets, economics, or mechanisms work, nor does he care.”

  1. And I am going to make one more statement some might n= ot like. Pinning all your hopes and futures on a man who has been bank= rupt FOUR TIMES in an industry whose accurate mantra is “The Hou= se Always Wins” is so far beyond accepting the facts as they are= put out in front of you that it is ‘shame on you’, not &l= squo;shame on him’.

Now onto the more serious = facts as they relate to the Publishing Industry… read carefully= … ignore at your own peril.

  1. I am getting roughly a half dozen calls per week askin= g me how quickly I can sell this or that company, and for cash, and ho= w much of a discount would they have to take to get out by the end of = the first quarter of 2019. Unfortunately, this is very much like the l= evel and tenor of calls I was getting in 2001 and again, 2008. This ti= me it seems that owners (sellers) have a feel for what is about to hap= pen and want to get out in front of the tsunami.

  1. And well they should. In 2001, the damage was not at g= reat, and I will explain shortly why. But in 2008, discounts on publis= hers for sale ran from 15% for really excellent companies to 40% for a= verage companies, and “unsaleable” for any company that wa= sn’t exactly up to par. You read those numbers correctly. I do n= ot partake in bullshit. If your company was worth $500,000 in 2008, it= is possible you would get anywhere from $300,000 to $450,000 for it&h= ellip; much of it financed BY YOU! If memory serves, = one third was about average. And the problem was companies selling for= between 250K and 750K, see below for why. Great for buyers, bad for s= ellers.

  1. Why? 2008’s economic issue was mortgages. They w= ere no longer available during/after the crisis. Buyers were using the= equity in homes and buildings to finance acquisitions. Without this s= ource of available funding, deals in this price range dried up. And fo= r a couple of years while the economy was doing tumbles.

  1. No, we don’t know exactly what will trigger a do= wnturn, recession, or problem. We can pretty well guess it will be som= e gross mis-understanding of economics by the government… wheth= er that is tariffs, budget deficits created from bad tax cuts, trying = to micromanage the Fed into doing the wrong thing, or Lord knows, some= thing else.

  1. Ok, so what else tells me? The number of printers goin= g out of business. The number of distributors and wholesalers either g= oing out of business or merging/being acquired BEFORE going out of bus= iness. And of course, the number of phone calls and emails I am gettin= g and I am just one (of a small group left) of Publishing Consultants = and Brokers.

SO, you have two choices f= or 2019 and beyond. Work to sell out if that is a short or even medium= term (2 to 4 year) goal. Or…

Work like hell to GROW you= r company, survive the downturn, and become a bigger player going forw= ard.

It is long past time for you to make a decision.

I have rung the bells and = waved the red flags and spoken my piece.

If you have decided to GRO= W in 2019 and beyond… contact me… we will help with Stra= tegic, Marketing, Bulk & Custom Selling, and acquisitions of speci= fic lines and companies to supercharge your growth.

If you have decided to SEL= L in 2019 and beyond… contact me… we will determine your= value in the marketplace, put the steps in place to do an immediate s= ale or set you up to be sold later in 2019 (I wouldn’t wait) wit= h programs and plans.

Either way… you sho= uld be acting NOW, even before the end of the year. Or make it your FI= RST 2019 New Years Resolution.
