Fort= Lauderdale could be without water until Friday due to water main break, of= ficials say Dakin Andone byline By Tina Burnside and Dakin Andone, CNN Upda= ted 4:32 PM ET, Thu July 18, 2019 A sign in Fort Lauderdale alerts the publ= ic of a water main break and to prepare to be without water service. (CNN)T= he residents of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, could be without water service un= til Friday morning, thanks to a water main break, according to a news relea= se from the city. The service outage also impacts surrounding municipalitie= s that receive their water through the city, including Lauderdale-by-the-Se= a, Oakland Park, Wilton Manors and sections of Davie and Tamarac, according= to the city's Twitter page. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said in a= news conference that a 42-inch water main was damaged Wednesday by a subco= ntractor working to repair electric lines near the city's Executive Airport= for Florida Power & Light. Crews responded immediately, but as they we= re working, the damaged pipe collapsed, forcing the city to turn off the wa= ter flow, Trantalis said. "City crews are working as fast as they can = to restore service," Trantalis said. "If everything goes well, we= could have service restored by this evening." Shoppers look at empty = shelves as large jugs of water are sold out at a supermarket after the wate= r main break in Fort Lauderdale. The water main delivered water from the ci= ty's wellfields to the Fiveash Water Treatment Plant, the mayor said. Anoth= er water treatment plant is still producing water but at a much lower capac= ity with a limited ability to serve the city and its residents, Deputy City= Manager Rob Hernandez told reporters. Officials are working simultaneously= on three different solutions to restore water service, the mayor added, bu= t city officials want residents to be prepared. Emergency procedures have b= een set up in the meantime, Trantalis said, and there are three set locatio= ns for residents in need to receive bottled water: the Beach Community Cent= er on 33rd Avenue, Mills Pond Park on Northwest 9th Avenue and Riverland Pa= rk on Southwest 27th Avenue. Crews work the scene of a water main break nea= r the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Authorities have already conducted= a rapid assessment of critical areas like hospitals and nursing homes and = were told they are OK for the time being, Trantalis said. But the city is p= repared to take action if it is necessary. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said o= n Twitter that his office is offering any assistance that the city needs. C= ity of Fort Lauderdale spokesman Chaz Adams told CNN that some residents ma= y still have water because of the water that remained in the system at the = time the flow was turned off. A boil water advisory has been put in place a= nd will remain so until water service has been fully restored and bacteriol= ogical testing can be done, Adams said. CORRECTION: An earlier version of t= his story gave an incorrect address for a bottled water pickup.
