It could= be a life saving act. TWO MORE WAYS TO LEAVE AMAZON Ok, this issue I will cover ways that you can Bulk and Custom sell you= r books and also since it is a cousin to Bulk & Custom, briefly, appro= aching book clubs. Bulk & Custom Sales I speak a lot about Bulk Selling... I have been very fortunate in my l= engthy career to have learned about them early and taken advantage of = this selling method to the tune of somewhere between $30 Million and $= 40 Million for myself and clients. In simplest terms, Bulk Selling is when you market a title specificall= y to sell more than one copy at a time. While bookstores and distribut= ors are considered "trade" sales, they are also actually Bulk Sales. Most often, Bulk Sales refer to making sales of ten or more copies to = sources outside the trade... individual customers who can use multiple= copies, all the way to large corporations and organizations who give = out your title in the tens of thousands. The primary key to these sales is, obviously, finding customers who wi= ll purchase 25, or 100, or 1,000 of your title. So you need to determi= ne who they are and pitch them hard. The two other keys and without a = lot of detail, are the discount you offer, and how the customer benefi= ts by buying your book. If you do this correctly, you should do very n= icely. Often, a company or organization will buy a quantity of a title to use= for promotional or educational purposes. And when that is done, they = will often turn a Bulk Sale onto a Custom Sale. Discounting is the other key. You may expect to discount 33% to upward= s of 70-75% if you really want to be successful at Bulk selling. Clear= ly, POD books need to be then printed by a real printer in order to ge= t the unit cost down so that a 70% discount isn't zeroed out by a high= print cost. I have heard the argument that selling in Bulk cheapens the title. I h= ave been selling in Bulk now for almost 35 years and have never had th= at happen to me. That is, a future customer doesn't buy in because the= y believe the title has been cheapened by others buying in Bulk. The B= ulk buyer buys because s/he needs the book for some specific reason an= d is oblivious to any outside forces. And they are quite aware they ar= e getting a substantial discount for their quantity purchase and that = logic makes perfect sense to them. A Custom Sale is a bulk sale but with some information placed on or in= the book for the benefit of the customer. It is often just a new/diff= erent cover with the name of the company or organization on it. It mig= ht be adding location information to the back of the book. It is any a= lternation to the original physical book for the benefit of the custom= er. My largest Bulk Sales was a Custom Sales of 250,000 units of one title= to the State of California a while back. The State wanted to add a le= tter from the Governor, the location of relevant offices of the State = in a list in the back, and a glossary of terms also in the back. Selling is the same...find customers who can utilize your title for th= eir personalized use...and find a price that makes them want to sign u= p. Book Clubs You can find lists of book clubs in many directory based publications = and even through associations focusing on book clubs. In our meaning, = a book club is a company or organization who sells a specific book or = five books each month to a group of members/customers, at a very deep = discounted price or even free as part of a subscription program. Most clubs will contract with you to print a specific quantity of thei= r own for a set price. I have worked with many of them over the years = and have found them to be reliable. Barnes & Noble while not a book club, operates in much the same way wh= en they publish 'classics' or 'remainder' titles. They will buy the ri= ghts to print, say, 10,000 copies of your book for $10,000 for two yea= rs. You have basically earned a royalty on this sale and will share wi= th your author as with any other sale (unless you have a specific righ= ts clause that gives the author 50%). While this isn't the most profitable way of selling books, it does pro= vide a profit for you, wide distribution of your title, and a link to = a future potential bulk customer of this (repeat) and other titles. As with Bulk and Custom Sales, find the customer for your title, pitch= like hell, and sell! *=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2= =A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 *=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0= =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 * Ok, enough for this short newsletter. = 50 WAYS (AND WHYS) TO LEAVE AMAZON – PART THREE

= (A Six Part Seri= es on Publishing Success)

=

Hi, Everyone…

Another short newsletter focusing on the issue of the 800 pound= elephant in the room… AMAZON. Publishers say = they can’t live with them and they can’t live without them= .

I asked you to read this article in the last two issues. I know= hundreds of you did just that (happy that so many of you were so appr= eciative) and I applaud you! I strongly recommend you read it if you h= aven’t, AND APPARENTLY A NUMBER OF THOUSANDS OF YOU STIL= L HAVENT!, and re-read it before going on to the next part of= the newsletter.

Read This… Very Critical

Read the latest Amazon crime blotter from the NY Times: = https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/23/tech= nology/amazon-domination-bookstore-books.html

And from reader Nate Butler… this article about just how= much can be earned on Amazon before someone discovers you are selling= fakes:

= https://www.christianitytoday.com/news/2019/july/am= azon-counterfeit-ivp-tish-harrison-warren-liturgy-ordinar.html<= /a>

And if you are looking for Amazon’s response to any of th= is…they have done this so far and just maybe it will help in so= me small way… nothing about counterfeiting, nothing about buyin= g the BUY box, nothing about protecting copyright… but some sma= ll move and the impact on you:

= https://www.webr= etailer.com/lean-commerce/amazon-end-dropshipping-arbitrage/

And if you think just because you are a nice guy, follow the ru= les, and all will be well with Amazon… WRONG… here is a NYT story that should curl whatever hair you have lef= t:

= https://www.msn.= com/en-us/money/companies/amazons-updated-suspension-policy-still-has-= sellers-worried-about-getting-inexplicably-booted/ar-AAECtsV?li=3DBBnb= fcN

I am really, really tired of making my case about Amazon but co= ntinue to feel compelled to keep my readers aware of ALL that affects = us in the business..

And just in case you STILL think Amazon is honorable… he= re is a teaser on what I will cover in the next newsletter about these= fine folks and doing business with them. Amazon acquired Audible a ye= ar or two ago and is remaking it in its own image:

= https://www.publ= ishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/audio-books/article/80722-a= udible-s-captions-program-stirs-copyright-fears-in-lit-community.html<= /span>

It is too bad, and I have a number of clients wanting to get in= to audio books, one of the strongest categories of sales for 2017, 201= 8, and so far, 2019. But… looks like Amazon is not going to ask= permission or follow any contractual obligations, or anything like th= at…

You are really going to have to find other ways top sell your b= ooks… YES, REALLY!

I will be covering a few more ways to leave Amazon and sell els= ewhere… read on.

Of course, if you would prefer to ‘skip ahead’ and = learn all about the 50 ways to sell outside Amazon, in a comprehensive= , methodical, and profitable way, I am available to consult, advise, w= ork with, or do the promoting for you for your title/s or entire publi= shing company. Ok… before I move on to more ways to sell outside Amazon= , I truly have to take a page or so and ring the alarm bell for many o= f you. Remember, if you haven’t been reading my newsletters for = years, I tend to speak loud and clear about things that impact us as p= ublishers, and in some ways persoanlly… that affect our lives, = our making a living, and frankly, staying alive during hard times.

We are about to approach one of those now and I must ring the a= larm bell. If you don’t happen to like what I am about to speak = about, go stick your head back in the sand and ignore it. Six million = people in the 1930s ignored numerous almost identical warnings about their own fate and never survived to talk about it. Ju= st saying…

You are already being told DAILY that you are = worth nothing to this country… and for many of you… that= you should be going back to where you came from…as long as tha= t isn’t anywhere in the United States. That you live in squalor = irrespective if your home or neighborhood is far better than living in= the middle of crime infested, air polluted, wall to wall person crowd= ed, noise filled, Fifth Avenue in New York.

Keep in mind that this administration screams about the rule of= law… that they are the party of law…yet, DAILY<= /strong> he/they continue to flout and break the law. Promises made to= coal miners, steel workers, farmers, and others are broken. I don&rsq= uo;t want to get into the politics here, but one law after another&hel= lip;.

= TWO MORE= WAYS TO LEAVE AMAZON

=

Ok, this issue I will cover ways that you can Bulk and Custom s= ell your books and also since it is a cousin to Bulk & Custom, bri= efly, approaching book clubs.

Bulk & Custom Sales

I speak a lot about Bulk Selling… I have been very fortu= nate in my lengthy career to have learned about them early and taken a= dvantage of this selling method to the tune of somewhere between $30 M= illion and $40 Million for myself and clients.

In simplest terms, Bulk Selling is when you market a title spec= ifically to sell more than one copy at a time. While bookstores and di= stributors are considered “trade” sales, they are also act= ually Bulk Sales.

Most often, Bulk Sales refer to making sales of ten or more cop= ies to sources outside the trade… individual customers who can = use multiple copies, all the way to large corporations and organizatio= ns who give out your title in the tens of thousands.

The primary key to these sales is, obviously, finding customers= who will purchase 25, or 100, or 1,000 of your title. So you need to = determine who they are and pitch them hard. The two other keys and wit= hout a lot of detail, are the discount you offer, and how the customer= benefits by buying your book. If you do this correctly, you should do= very nicely.

Often, a company or organization will buy a quantity of a title= to use for promotional or educational purposes. And when that is done= , they will often turn a Bulk Sale onto a Custom Sale.

Discounting is the other key. You may expect to discount 33% to= upwards of 70-75% if you really want to be successful at Bulk selling= . Clearly, POD books need to be then printed by a real printer in orde= r to get the unit cost down so that a 70% discount isn’t zeroed = out by a high print cost.

I have heard the argument that selling in Bulk cheapens the tit= le. I have been selling in Bulk now for almost 35 years and have never= had that happen to me. That is, a future customer doesn’t buy i= n because they believe the title has been cheapened by others buying i= n Bulk. The Bulk buyer buys because s/he needs the book for some speci= fic reason and is oblivious to any outside forces. And they are quite = aware they are getting a substantial discount for their quantity purch= ase and that logic makes perfect sense to them.

A Custom Sale is a bulk sale but with some information placed o= n or in the book for the benefit of the customer. It is often just a n= ew/different cover with the name of the company or organization on it.= It might be adding location information to the back of the book. It i= s any alternation to the original physical book for the benefit of the= customer.

My largest Bulk Sales was a Custom Sales of 250,000 units of on= e title to the State of California a while back. The State wanted to a= dd a letter from the Governor, the location of relevant offices of the= State in a list in the back, and a glossary of terms also in the back= .

Selling is the same…find customers who can utilize your = title for their personalized use…and find a price that makes th= em want to sign up.

Book Clubs

You can find lists of book clubs in many directory based public= ations and even through associations focusing on book clubs. In our me= aning, a book club is a company or organization who sells a specific b= ook or five books each month to a group of members/customers, at a ver= y deep discounted price or even free as part of a subscription program= .

Most clubs will contract with you to print a specific quantity = of their own for a set price. I have worked with many of them over the= years and have found them to be reliable.

Barnes & Noble while not a book club, operates in much the = same way when they publish ‘classics’ or ‘remainder&= rsquo; titles. They will buy the rights to print, say, 10,000 copies o= f your book for $10,000 for two years. You have basically earned a roy= alty on this sale and will share with your author as with any other sa= le (unless you have a specific rights clause that gives the author 50%= ).

While this isn’t the most profitable way of selling books= , it does provide a profit for you, wide distribution of your title, a= nd a link to a future potential bulk customer of this (repeat) and oth= er titles.

As with Bulk and Custom Sales, find the customer for your title= , pitch like hell, and sell!
