While many have lost jobs, others had to take pay cuts, and countless others had to rearrange their home spaces to serve as offices. With working from home becoming the norm for most employees, the boundaries between work and home have become blurred, and many an employee finds themselves working much longer hours, because "leaving work" is just so much more difficult. All these changes, including the current economic climate, have created conditions that contribute to job uncertainty, financial stress and a reduction in employee well-being and productivity. Generally, employers are cost-cutting and demanding more from fewer employees. They want high levels of productivity and performance. Employers want resilient employees who can navigate through uncertainty and ambiguity, can handle change and pressure, and have personal coping strategies that mean they can manage their personal stress levels. Business leaders who are good role models understand that employee health, wellbeing and engagement are a competitive advantage. Economic downturns do not last forever. However, constant change and uncertainty are here to stay. Whilst resilience is often thought of as something that individuals are born with (i.e. you either have it or you don’t), research shows that there is much that can be done to help individuals to improve their personal resilience levels.
