The fact that the story is a barebones= ?kill these guys on your naughty list? bounty-hunting premise certainly do= esn't help to draw one in. The campaign centers around a powerful evil shar= d that has caused the good guys' enemies to rally together to claim it. Nat= urally, you've gotta get them to cut it out by killing them all so that vir= tue can reign supreme, or whatever. It's awesome that some of the most icon= ic and well-known D&D characters, like Drizzt Do'Urden the dark elf, ta= ke center stage as playable characters for Dark Alliance, but it's deflatin= g that they aren't used well at all. Each of the four protagonists will hav= e short dialogue exchanges with one another as you adventure, but with almo= st no additional time given to fleshing out character motivations or person= alities for those who don't already know them, the story is largely a nothi= ngburger. You just check targets off of your checklist, then call it a day = and go home ? that's a pretty poor use of the Forgotten Realms' decades-lon= g history of worldbuilding.

I never found myself struggling with= the difficulty. There's no option to play in "hard" mode, but on= the flip side you can turn off the encounters entirely if you'd rather jus= t wander around the gorgeous hand-drawn world and take in all the scenery. = But once I'd figured out the rhythm of battles and the awesome power of the= Counterstrike move, it felt pretty easy. On the rare occasion when I did f= all in battle, Legend of Mana started me right back at the start of the act= ion, so there was no need to retread half a dungeon just to get back into t= he thick of things. That's surprising for a game from that era of JRPGs, an= d I definitely appreciated that approach.

The Legend of Mana of 2021 is as close = to the original version as you could hope for while still bringing this cla= ssic original PlayStation JRPG into the modern era. The sprite work is time= less, and the newly redrawn widescreen backgrounds are just perfect. Legend= of Mana is a game I just want to look at and absorb into my eyes as much a= s I want to play it? maybe even moreso, because while combat holds up, the = old-school structure of its story makes it a little tougher to recommend un= less you're going to play with a walkthrough guide open on your phone the w= hole time. I enjoyed my time with Legend of Mana, don't get me wrong, but w= andering through its world from one unconnected quest to the next makes rea= ching the end feel like a very long guessing game ? and there's little or n= othing that can be done to remedy that without fundamentally altering the D= NA of Legend of Mana.

As a lifelong game master of tableto= p RPGs, there are few things more exciting than the promise of a high-quali= ty, dungeon-delving co-op action game taking place in the iconic Forgotten = Realms. After all, it's hard to beat the storytelling, worldbuilding, or high-fantasy badassery o= f the original d20-rolling pastime that is Dungeons & Dragons. But in a= ll my years, I've seldom seen anyone roll a critical failure quite like&nbs= p;Dungeons & Dragons: = Dark Alliance, which manages to take all that potential and turn it int= o a joyless labor that's mind-numbingly repetitive, deeply lacking in story= telling, and absolutely overflowing with bugs. And that just breaks this ne= rd's heart more than a group of PCs deciding to split the party.

Dark Alliance is a by-the-numbers four-player co-op action= brawler that's all about hacking, slashing, and blasting your way through = all manner of beasts and monsters in typical dungeon-delving fashion... tha= t's about as deep as it ever gets. Once you've played for 10 minutes, you'v= e beheld pretty much everything Dark Alliance has to offer ? something I can confirm after spendi= ng a dozen hours getting to the credits of an adventure that got stale duri= ng the second level, and then a dozen more trudging through a painful solo run.
