My beloved sister
My sister, Mary Venus, and I were born in a small jungle village in Tampico=
-Alto Veracruz, Mexico. In 1941, World War II broke out. My father, a docto=
r with his small clinic, was doing humanitarian work medically helping the =
Natives in the burg. With an amazing surprise to the villagers, a German su=
bmarine had embarked in the town and started investigating the surrounding =
area. Finding out my father's profession visited him with a wounded, dying =
German soldier, and a gun pointed at his head. This became troublesome for =
my dad concerning his young children's safety and months after, brought my =
sister and me into the United States to the town of Mercedes, Texas. We liv=
ed with our grandparents until my mother was able to come into the United S=
tates. It took years and by the end of World War II; we reunited with our m=
other again. We became a family in Mercedes, Texas, and by 1958 had four si=
sters and brothers ? a family of eight children. Mary Venus being the oldes=
t became indifferent as we grew up; she was five years older than me, quiet=
 and reserved, contrary to me that was robust, loud, and dim-witted. Myster=
iously, I had inherited a monkey's gene in my system and acted like one. I =
enjoyed doing acrobatic on outdoors clotheslines; standing on top of the ro=
oftops doing flip-flops and climbing the mesquite trees. It was not uncommo=
n to tear my skirts and pig-tails untangled without my colored ribbons lose=
 However, Mary Venus, being old-fashioned and ladylike, found my ostentati=
on ways disgusting. All eight children went to the only public segregated s=
chools with racial indifferences. It was before the Civil Rights Law came i=
nto effect in public schools. We all endured and suffered discrimination th=
roughout our growing school years, which made Mary Venus bitter. In her jun=
ior year, Mary Venus got a job working after school for the bus station and=
 met a military man named John Boop staying at Harlingen Air Force Base. Af=
ter she graduated from school, they married and left to live in Germany. I =
never heard from her until years later. By the sixties, I had graduated fro=
m high school and lived in Denver, Colorado. I got married and moved to the=
 west side of the state, a small community for raising children. After maki=
ng my residence, I lost contact with Mary Venus, as I was busy being a home=
maker and a mother. I was very much involved with my sister Francis, a year=
 younger than me, living in Dallas, and Lydia our youngest sister that live=
d in Detroit, Michigan. It was during this time a dark domed cloud threaten=
ed the family with news of Vietnam not sparing us from the devastating hard=
ships of the war. All three of my brothers went to war, except Danny, my yo=
ungest brother in our family. The Air Force shipped John and my sister Mary=
 Venus to Guam. One of my brothers went to Vietnam, later to Cambodia, and =
came back wounded, and by the grace of God, all of my brothers survived. Af=
ter Vietnam, my brothers and two sisters would get together, enjoying vacat=
ions, enjoying the beautiful Colorado mountainous scenes. We all enjoyed fa=
mily reunions during the summer months, traveling to Branson, Missouri enjo=
ying the shows and reminiscence on in our daily lives, since we all lived s=
tates away; but never with Mary Venus. In 2009, the family found out that m=
y sister Francis had a terminal disease, and after several years of treatme=
nts later died. Two years after my other sister Lydia, living in Michigan, =
found out she had terminal cancer and within four years passed. It left Mar=
y Venus and me, the surviving sisters and the two oldest of the clan. Losin=
g Francis and Lydia emotionally destroyed me, realizing the importance's of=
 life and the critical obligation of taking care of our bodies. Returning f=
rom Guam, John and Mary Venus moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to be with her=
 two daughters already living there; making it closer to see each other. I =
seldom heard from her, and we never communicated. There was always the secr=
et of dead silence. Living in Riverton, Utah was several hours to travel fr=
om where I lived. On my first exciting trip to Utah, it surprised me to see=
 my sister happy and hospitable. We were able to communicate: I understood =
her resentments. Not seeing my sister in so many years was surprising. My s=
ister short in stature reminded me of my mother's loyal trades: of making q=
uilts, cooking, gardening, and doing genealogy. She had an eye for putting =
colors together for crafts. I had finally found my sister being so kind and=
 generous. From the very beginning of our lives was meant for us to be toge=
ther. She took me shopping in beautiful Salt Lake City's discount stores an=
d many of the factories where you could buy dry can goods for storage. We a=
lso escaped into Wendover, Nevada's Casinos, and had fun. Soon after, she w=
ould surprise me by driving and coming to stay with me in Colorado and goin=
g to yard sales and different markets; looking for cloth pieces to finish h=
er quilts.=20
During the years, the remaining family with nieces and nephews got together=
 and enjoy spending Christmas in Hawaii and viewing the enormous whales out=
 in the ocean. On other occasions, we all have enjoyed during the fall mont=
hs in Cancun, Mexico, buying their colorful crafts and viewing the ancient =
Aztec temples. As time processed, Mary Venus and I became inseparable, all =
those years of not realizing the wonderful memories we could have had, but =
faith had made it possible. I did not realize what a beautiful treasure she=
 was; not realizing she was like a hidden pearl along the ocean's edge. As =
Mary Venus got older and looked like my mother, it comforted me in being wi=
th her. She taught me different ways of saving money through canning and fr=
eezing, using coupons, and buying cases of can goods to keep us nourished f=
rom the winter storms. I realized how truly blessed I was. Getting older an=
d in our golden years, I realized we started in life together from the very=
 beginning and will probably go out together, holding hands the same way.--=

  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">A steak of lightning bolted across the=
 sky. Kathy screeched and dropped to the ground, her best friend Barb landi=
ng on top of her. The afternoon sky had darkened considerably since the two=
 arrived at the dock of the Washington Ferry. Their plans were to take the =
ferry from the tip of Door County across the, sometimes treacherous water, =
to Washington Island. From there, a ferry would take them to Rock Island. C=
ars were welcome on Washington Island, but tiny Rock Island was strictly fo=
r pedestrians. Leaving Barb's car on the bigger Island, they watched as the=
 ferry docked. Two people stepped off the platform. &nbsp;</span></p>=20
  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">?I've been wanting to go over to Rock =
Island,? Barb confessed. ?There's a couple of old cemeteries over there. It=
'd be fun to find one of them, don't you think??</span></p>=20
  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">Kathy nodded, ?Ya, sure. Let's do it.?=
</span></p>=20
  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">The clouds continued to gather, lightn=
ing occasionally sliced through the darkening sky, but the girls were not a=
bout to change their minds. They hopped on the small ferry. The trip across=
 the water was quick, but unpleasant. Choppy waves bounced off the ferry, a=
nd rain pelted down on the passengers.</span></p>=20
  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">Kathy wondered if they had made the ri=
ght decision. She hoped that the rain would stop before they began the walk=
 to the other side of the island. ?I sure hope that this lets up,? she said=
 ?It won't be any fun if we have to trek 6 miles in the rain.?</span></p>=

  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">?And back again,? Barb added.</span></=

  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">?Do you know what Death's Door is?? Ba=
rb asked.</span></p>=20
  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">?Ya, I do.? Kathy laughed, as they ste=
pped under a flimsy awning. ?We just passed through it, back there on the l=
ast ferry. Evidently, when the Native Americans lived in the area, warriors=
 from two tribes fought a rough battle. I think it was between the Ho Chunk=
?that's what the Winnebago originally called themselves?and the Pottawatomi=
 The weather changed, high winds developed, and both sides perished. The W=
innebago believed the disaster was a sign that they should never attempt to=
 cross the straight again; they called it a doorway to death.?</span></p>=

  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">?Wow!? That is pretty interesting. Do =
you think as long as we made it over that stretch of water, the rest of the=
 day will be a piece of cake??</span></p>=20

ey learned that the building was completed in 1929, with most of the materi=
al coming from the island. The exterior, as well as the interior is made fr=
om blue limestone collected from the island. The lower level can house two =
50 ft. yachts. The upper level reaches 65 ft from the water. Three sides ar=
e lined with towering windows. A balcony stretches from wall to wall and ov=
erlooks the beautiful furnishings and polished floors of the hall. An outsi=
de balcony overlooks the water.</a></span></p>=20

ly old.? The girls examined each stone. &nbsp;</a></span></p>=20

e girls decided to straighten it. With Barb on one side, Kathy on the other=
, they grabbed hold and pushed. As the tombstone moved, an opening came int=
o view. A big, long, vicious looking snake slithered out. The two women scr=
eamed to high heaven, jumped over the fence onto the path. For several minu=
tes, they hopped and screeched thinking that they had met their doom. The s=
nake disappeared into the unknown, while the damsels kept screaming. The th=
ing was as big around as their arm and probably four feet long. Its color w=
as black with wide orange bands. A demon for sure, the two finally went on =
their way, a bit more aware of their surroundings. Later, they looked up&nb=
sp;<em>Snakes of Wisconsin</em>. They couldn't find anything that matched t=
he snake that attempted to take them down.</a></span></p>=20

kers very long to reach the Light House at the northern corner of the islan=
d. It was closed. They trekked on, stopping to examine a tree, or a flower,=
 being careful not to disturb any wildlife, being snakes. The day turned in=
to a lovely afternoon, with partly cloudy skies, and thankfully, no rain.</=

darkening again. It began to rain. ?Oh no!? Kathy cried. She pulled her rai=
n gear out and wrapped herself up in it. A crack of thunder startled the tw=

e in. There was none. They finally found a huge tree with thick foliage han=
ging over the trail. The huddled against the old tree, exhausted, cold, and=
 lost. At least they felt lost, the ferry was only a few yards beyond them.=

ocked waiting for them. A moment later, and they were on board, again laugh=
ing at what had happened to them on this peaceful, beautiful, quiet little =
island. Not far behind them, the three young men appeared.</a></span></p>=

h laughter again, each wondering how the ride from Washington Island to the=
 mainland would be tomorrow. Dared they even murmur the name Porte des Mort=
es--doorway to death.</a></span></p>=20

d as her and her brother, Kyle, sprinted to lose the shop owner in the crow=
d. This was the exhilaration she lived for, that rush of adrenaline from ca=
using a disturbance and completing a job. In her hand, she clutched their f=
irst real hope of making it out of this town and being free to do whatever =
they wanted. Kyle and Kaya had landed on Winor Island when they were seven.=
 Their parents had wanted a better life for them than what Zyra, their home=
 country, could give them. They scraped up enough pennies to finally book p=
assage on a ship heading toward the coast of Etheria; the promised land of =
opportunities and hopefully a better life for their kids.&nbsp;</a></span><=

und in the water, screaming ?Mom! Dad!? at the top of her lungs. She dipped=
 lower and lower, swallowing mouthfuls of salty water through her screams. =
Finally she felt a hand loop around her and tug her toward a large piece of=
 wood to float on. She looked up into Kyle's face, her twin had found her. =
He smiled and said ?We're going to be okay, we just need to keep kicking. W=
e can do that?. And kick they did, for hours and hours until they finally s=
potted shore. They swam all the way up to the sandy beach and collapsed. Tr=
aders eventually found the children and brought them to the only orphanage =
on Winor. And that's where they had grown up, relying constantly on each ot=
her.</a></span></p>=20

 He smiled and relief flooded through Kaya's body. ?Come ON!? he yelled, gr=
abbing her wrist and dragging her through a doorway that hadn't been there =
before. Hidden in the dark passageway, he shut the door behind them, sealin=
g it back into the wall with no trace. He looked at her again grinning and =
said ?Told you I knew a shortcut?. She shoved him playfully and started wal=
king down the passage.</span></p>=20
  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">?What is this place?? she grabbed the =
wall to make sure she was walking straight. The darkness was deep and her e=
yes were having trouble adjusting.&nbsp;</span></p>=20
  <p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">?The client showed this to me, we can =
make the sale and leave quickly and quietly. And then we can go wherever we=
 want to, just you and me.? He grabbed her hand and she couldn't see it, bu=
t could feel his smile wash over her. Kyle's smiles were the only thing tha=
t had kept her sane for so many years. The orphanage was less than idyllic =
for growing up. Mrs. Finnigan basically ran her own pe<a style=3D"color: #f=
