The IRS has launched a new program that will enabl= e many employers, including tax-exempt employers, to resolve past worker = classification issues and come back into compliance by making a minimal p= ayment covering past payroll tax obligations rather than waiting for an I= RS audit. 

To be eligible for the new Voluntary Classification Settlement Pr= ogram an applicant must:

  • Consistently have treated the workers as nonemployees in the past
  • Filed all required Forms 1099 for the workers for the previous three = years
  • Not currently be under audit by the IRS, Department of Labor or = a state agency concerning the classification of these workers.

The Political Organization Filing and Discl= osure application will be unavailable from 8:00 am EST on Saturd= ay, October 8, 2011 through Monday, October 10, 2011, at 12:00 pm (noon) = EST.  The POFD login and search functions will not be operational du= ring the shutdown, which is necessary in order to install routine patches= and make firewall upgrades.

Attention return preparers! Don't forget to renew your PTIN on time. <= a href=3D"http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-11-80.pdf" target=3D"_blank">= Notice 2011-80 provides that PTINs must now be renewed on a calendar = year basis.  All PTIN holders must renew their numbers using the onl= ine PTIN application or paper Form W-12 and pay the required fee ($64.25 = for 2012) after October 15 and before January 1 annually.
