I fully understand that the LLG membership should be small and focused, but I feel that this informal policy may be perceived as being at odds with the LLG Bylaws Article 2 Section 1 (Purpose) if an individual exceptionally exhibits some of the skills outlaid in the LLG's Purpose. I opine that we should not be dissuading people from joining IFF they have shown some kind of continuing active interest in the organization/business aspects of the project. This would be indicated by a) actively working on some project over an extended period of time, especially a language project that involves coordinating with other Lojbanists, such as Pierre's effort, and byfy work for Robin. (This indicates both longevity of interest and organizational interest). The following also show organizational interest: a1) Assumption of responsibility for any of the multitudinous non-language chores that come up (Robin seems to have several of these related to website maintenance). a2) especial activity in recruiting or promoting Lojban to the outside world. Usually this will involve representation at a science fiction convention, or teaching a Lojban class. b) having read the bylaws, preferably before the meeting, and themselves asking to join (as opposed to being proposed by another - others can urge them, but they should have the initiative to speak up for themselves. b1) someone who sits through a meeting, perhaps opining on discussion topics even though they don't have a vote, and who then asks to be a member afterwards has shown similar interest. What we don't want are people who sign up, possibly attend one meeting, and never show any interest in organizational matters again. Probably around 1/4 to 1/3 of the people who have been members fit this category, though it has gotten better since we went to online meetings (travelling to Virginia for an annual meeting was certainly a difficulty that caused many to sign up and then disappear). Another 1/3 have served for 2-3 years and then stopped being involved. Quorum is somewhat of an issue, but not a severe one if we keep our numbers in the 2 dozen or so range. We approached 3 dozen a few years ago, and had more trouble with quorum, but I am not sure how much the number was significant as opposed to our having a *very* inclusive concept of membership in those days. lojbab -- Bob LeChevalier lojbab@lojban.org www.lojban.org President and Founder, The Logical Language Group, Inc. _______________________________________________ Llg-members mailing list Llg-members@lojban.org http://mail.lojban.org/mailman/listinfo/llg-members
