No Sandy damage (a tree fell on the house my son in living in, but no one was hurt). Health issues and the election are more distracting. But maybe we can get moving now. *** Roll Call I count 15 people responding to the quorum call, out of the 19 listed as members on the LLG site, so I will rule that we have a quorum Missing from the meeting are Mark Shoulson, Stephen Weeks, Jay Kominek, Pierre Abbat. With no minutes or meeting summary up for last year, I had to dig through a lot of old emails to find that we removed Jay Kominek last year. Someone please delete him from the members list on the LLG web page. I think that Pierre said he would be out of town for a short while, but he should be back by now. No idea of the status of the others. If you are here, please speak up. Stephen Weeks and Mark Shoulson were also missing last year. I don't know the status of either, but Mark has sometimes drifted away in the past, and I suspect that he doesn't watch LLG traffic very closely. I don't think Steven has been at the last several meetings (my last email from him seems to be 2007), and a motion for his removal is in order. I rule that we have a quorum for regular business. *** Meeting Notice While I did indicate the meeting was upcoming a month before I started it, I don't think that qualifies as a meeting notice as specified in the Bylaws (which is supposed to be from the Secretary and should be rather more definite than my note was), and not everyone is present, so I believe that bylaw changes are out of order. *** Minutes So minutes or meeting summary from last year has been submitted, and none is up on the website. Anyone? *** Reports Robin has submitted a treasurer's report to the list. I don't have any thing specific to report as President except regarding the 25th anniversary celebration (and not much there), which will be covered under New Business. I will note that we sold just over a hundred copies of CLL during the last 12 months, a record now achievable in part because Amazon is doing most of our fulfillment. We have approximately 2-3 years supply remaining of the current edition at that sales rate, and hopefully a new edition will be ready before then. I seem to be missing the most recent Lightning Source reports (or probably misfiled them), but sales of the intro book for 10 months of the last year were about 86 (1/4 of them last December), so probably a bit short of 100. Nothing has been submitted from any committees. It would be useful to know the status of the byfy work. Robin? Pierre last year made a report on his committee regarding Lojban proficiency. If he is present, is there anything new to report? Anyone else? *** New Members No non-members have indicated their presence at the meeting, but that is not disqualifying. Does anyone wish to propose someone who has not indicated their presence? (Please be sure that they want to be a member, and urge them to arrange with Robin to be on the list). I will note that Ali Sajid Imami has been active in promoting the 25th anniversary celebration (and contacting me regarding same), but I cannot attest to his overall involvement, or whether he would want to be a member. Lojban List emails indicate that there is a fair amount of activity involving people not in the formal membership, but again I don't feel qualified to propose anyone. Here is what I said last year. Robin is on record more actively discouraging new members but I will let him speak for himself: > I opine that we should not be dissuading people from joining IFF they have shown some kind of continuing active interest in the organization/business aspects of the project. > > This would be indicated by > a) actively working on some project over an extended period of time, especially a language project that involves coordinating with other Lojbanists, such as Pierre's effort, and byfy work for Robin. (This indicates both longevity of interest and organizational interest). > The following also show organizational interest: > a1) Assumption of responsibility for any of the multitudinous non-language chores that come up (Robin seems to have several of these related to website maintenance). > a2) especial activity in recruiting or promoting Lojban to the outside world. Usually this will involve representation at a science fiction convention, or teaching a Lojban class. > > b) having read the bylaws, preferably before the meeting, and themselves asking to join (as opposed to being proposed by another - others can urge them, but they should have the initiative to speak up for themselves. > b1) someone who sits through a meeting, perhaps opining on discussion topics even though they don't have a vote, and who then asks to be a member afterwards has shown similar interest. > > What we don't want are people who sign up, possibly attend one meeting, and never show any interest in organizational matters again. Probably around 1/4 to 1/3 of the people who have been members fit this category, though it has gotten better since we went to online meetings (travelling to Virginia for an annual meeting was certainly a difficulty that caused many to sign up and then disappear). Another 1/3 have served for 2-3 years and then stopped being involved. I will allow until the end of Thursday UT for new member proposals, and then another 3 days for objections to adding anyone proposed, and then we will have the Board elections (thus starting either Friday or Monday, depending on whether new members are proposed.) To keep things moving, nominations for the Board may be made starting immediately. The current directors are: LeChevalier, Robert (also serving ex officio as Virginia State representative) Vilva, Veijo Powell, Robin Lee Johansen, Arnt Richard Paulssen, Timo If any of the current Board members is NOT seeking reelection, please speak up. If anyone not on the Board wants to serve, please speak up. If there is objection to voting on the Board as a slate (thus requiring individual voting), please speak up. (If there are more candidates than slots, this will happen anyway.) The first three are serving as officers. Officers are elected by the Board in a separate meeting once the Board are elected. lojbab -- Bob LeChevalier lojbab@lojban.org www.lojban.org President and Founder, The Logical Language Group, Inc. _______________________________________________ Llg-members mailing list Llg-members@lojban.org http://mail.lojban.org/mailman/listinfo/llg-members
