on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly
about the matter, said there are no credible or specific threats against
the London Marathon. The London race's chief executive, Nick Bitel, said
marathon officials contacted the police to discuss security plans "as soon

about the situation in Boston, saying "it is a very sad day
for athletics and for our friends in marathon running."

Anne Smedinghoff, 25, was killed Saturday, April 6, 2013 in
southern Afghanistan , the first American diplomat to die on the job
since last year's attack on the U.S. diplomatic installation in Benghazi,
Libya. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Tom Smedinghoff)The Associated PressU.S. Secretary
of State John Kerry will stop in Chicago on Monday to visit
the parents of the young U.S. diplomat who was killed while delivering
textbooks in southern Afghanistan earlier this month.Kerry is making the
detour on his way back from Japan, the final leg of a
10-day overseas tour which started with tragedy when he learned of Anne
Smedinghoff's death while readying to depart for Turkey on April 6.At the
time, a clearly affected Kerry contacted Smedinghoff's parents, Tom and
Mary Beth, from Andrews Air Force Base. On Monday, he will fly
in directly to see them.Smedinghoff was just 25 when she and four
other Americans were killed while walking from a military base to a
nearby school. Two explosions occurred, apparently a suicide car bombing
followed by a roadside blast. An FBI investigation is in its preliminary
stages.Kerry told embassy staff in Tokyo that Smedinghoff was "full of ideals
and full of hopes, taking books to children in a school so
they can learn."She was "wiped out by terrorism -- the worst kind
of nihilism," he said."It doesn't stand for anything except killing people

point of this regulation was more to discourage cash-based purchases of
medical services and products and drive people into more expensive, comprehensive
insurance plans to help insurance companies cover costs under the law.)But
today is the day when the compliance curve of the presidents law
really starts to get steeper. The Supreme Court ruled last year that whatever
Obama and congressional Democrats called the penalty under the law for not
having insurance, it is still a tax. And one can see why,
since the initial point of contact for the uninsured with the law
comes through the IRS.The government will be using the tax returns due
today to decide who will receive an estimated $25 billion in new
insurance subsidies next year.Enrollment in the new entitlement program
is set to begin on Oct. 1. The complex process of enrollment
looks to be an even more daunting task than tax preparation. And
with many states functioning differently and delays piling up, it could
be a real goat rope. But whatever comes out and whenever it goes
into place, the tax returns due today will provide the initial basis
for how ones relationship with the government and health insurance functions. Those
making up to 400 percent of federal poverty levels -- $43,560 for
an individual and $89,400 for a family of four in 2011, according
to the Kaiser Family Foundation will be eligible for the new

Senate Democrats are making last-minute changes to the hearing schedule
for a soon-to-be released immigration overhaul, in an apparent bid to address
Republican complaints that they're not being given enough time to review
the major legislation. The bipartisan "Gang of Eight" -- which for months
has been working on the bill -- plans to unveil the legislation
Tuesday. Members of that group, including Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.,
have over the past several days adamantly defended the provisions of the
package, trying to counter conservative skepticism that the plan amounts
to "amnesty."At the same time, Republicans have complained that Senate leaders
were not allowing nearly enough time to debate the bill, with just
one hearing scheduled by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy,
D-Vt.On Monday, Leahy made a gesture to those critics, delaying a previously
scheduled hearing from Wednesday to Friday, and scheduling one more for
next Monday."Over the course of the next week, the Senate Judiciary Committee
will hold two hearings on a forthcoming, bipartisan proposal to reform the
Nation's broken immigration system," Leahy said in a statement. "I look
forward to reviewing the bill, holding prompt hearings on the legislation,
and proceeding to debating and marking up legislation on this important
issue."Supporters of the bill are trying to navigate tricky political waters
that have drowned prior attempts to pass an immigration o
