In a statement, Madigan acknowledged sending a "recommendation to Metra senior staff that Mr. Ward be considered for a salary adjustment. ... When notified Mr. Clifford had concerns about the appearance of the recommendation coming from my office, I withdrew the request."During a trip to the state Capitol in Springfield, Clifford says he was asked by Democratic state lawmaker Rep. Luis Arroyo to consider hiring somebody the Latino caucus sends him. Clifford says he told Arroyo "we have a process. Times are different today at Metra than they were under my predecessor. Every applicant, every employee will come in through the front door."Clifford went on to point fingers at those who intentionally "railroaded" him into a poor performance evaluation which led to the end of his contract -- specifically Metra Chairman Brad O'Hallaron and another Metra board member. When Clifford approached O'Hallaron about his upcoming contract he claims O'Hallaron responded, "but we're just dating." Then said, "I need to get a meeting with Mr. Madigan and I need to find out what kind of damage you've caused to our potential for future funding."When it was his turn to testify, O'Hallaron denied Clifford's accusations. O'Hallaron told the RTA board: "I o modes. If you have two iPhones, you can measure distances up to 82 feet. Helen Thomas, a pioneer for women in journalism, has died at age 92.The irrepressible White House correspondent who used her seat in the front row to grill 10 presidents -- often to their discomfort and was not shy about sharing her opinions -- died at her apartment in Washington.Thomas had been ill for a long time and in and out of the hospital before coming home Thursday, said friend Muriel Dobbin. She made her name as a bulldog for United Press International in the great wire-service rivalries of old and as a pioneer for women in journalism.Thomas was persistent to the point of badgering. One White House press secretary described her questioning as "torture" -- and he was one of her fans. Her refusal to conceal her strong opinions, even when posing questions to a president, and her public hostility toward Israel, caused discomfort among colleagues. In 2010, that tendency ended a career that had started in 1943 and made her one of the best known journalists in Washington. On a videotape circulated on the Internet, she said Israelis should "get out of Palestine" and "go home" to Germany, Poland or the United States. The remark brought down widespread condemnation and she resigned. In January 2011, she became a columnist for a free weekly paper in a Washington suburb, months after the controversy forced her from her previous post.In her long career, she was indelibly associated with the ritual ending White House news conferences. She was tino vote nationwide last year.Closer to home, no Republican represents any majority Hispanic district in the Legislature, even though the GOP holds sizable majorities in the House and Senate. The only Hispanic ever elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas, Ted Cruz, is a Republican whose father was born in Cuba. Many top GOP leaders are counting on him and Bush to remake the party's image with Hispanics.Gilberto Hinojosa, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, scoffs at that."How is it," he asked, "that these people think that if they're fortunate to be born to a Hispanic mother and are of Hispanic heritage, that gives them the right to have the support of the Hispanic community?"Bush said Hispanics "don't vote in a monolith." He sidestepped questions about national issues such as immigration, choosing to focus on the responsibilities of the land commissioner. The office oversees vast oil and mineral rights which help fund public education. It also administers benefits to military veterans."This is an office I've had my heart on for years," Bush said. "I'm a former educator, a veteran and I have a strong energy and asset background. This is kind of what I'm excited about."Born in Houston, Bush grew up in Florida, where his father was governor from 1998 until 2007. He graduated from and played baseball for Rice University in Houston before teaching school in inner-city Miami and working on George W. Bush's presidential campaign. He earned
