Dear Publisher:
This communication is to inform you of the current status of LSI's Chain of Custody (CoC) certification program as of September 19, 2014.
Effective with books manufactured on or after January 19, 2011, Lightning Source certifies the following:
· All wood product components used in black & white, standard color, or select color paperback books, utilizing either cream or white bookblock paper, that are manufactured in the LaVergne, Tennessee Production Center are Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) Certified Sourcing.
· All wood product components used in black & white, standard color, or select color paperback books, utilizing either cream or white bookblock paper that are manufactured the Allentown, Pennsylvania Production center are Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) Certified Sourcing.
· The cream or white bookblock paper in black & white, standard color, or select color hardcover books manufactured in the LaVergne, Tennessee Production Center or the Allentown, Pennsylvania Production Center is Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) Certified Sourcing. No other wood product components used in hardcover book production (examples: cover boards, spine board, end sheets) are certified at this time.
· All wood product components used in black & white or standard color paperback books, utilizing either cream or white bookblock paper, or premium color paperbacks on white bookblock paper, that are manufactured in the Milton Keynes UK Production Center are Forest Stewardship Council®
(FSC®) Mix Credit. FSC® C084699
At this time, only the premium color paperbacks on white bookblock paper, manufactured in the UK Production Center, are certified, as noted above. No other premium color books, regardless of production site or type, are certified at this time.
At this time, no hardcover books manufactured in Milton Keynes UK are certified.
At this time, no books manufactured in Fairfield, OH; Fresno, CA; or LSI's Australia facility are certified.
The Edison, NJ production facility was closed in late July, 2013. No books manufactured in the Edison, NJ facility, prior to closing, were certified.
Lightning Source France is a joint venture between Lightning Source and Hachette and is not a party to Lightning Source's current paper certification process.

To determine the certification status of a given book:
· Go to www.lightningsource.com/ChainofCustody where you will find the link to the "LSI Certified Product List."
· Obtain the "Batch Code" and "Manufacturing Location" from the last page of the bookblock.
· The Batch Code is the initial 6 numeric digits.
· The Manufacturing Location is "LV" for LaVergne, "BV" for Allentown, "UK" for Milton Keynes, "AU" for Melbourne, Australia, "ED" for Edison, or "FF" for Fairfield.
· Examine the seventh character in the data string containing the Batch Code and Manufacturing Location. If it is:
· a number (0-9) or
· an "s" or
· an "f" or
· a "*" (asterisk)
then the applicable certification status code in the LSI Certified Product List applies.
HOWEVER, if the seventh character is an "n" then the entire book is NOT CoC certified and the applicable status code in the LSI Certified Product list does not apply, due to presence of publisher-supplied, non-certified paper stocks.applicable status code in the LSI Certified Product List does not apply, due to presence of publisher-supplied, non-certified paper stocks.
· Determine if the book is a paperback or hardcover.
· Determine if the book has a black and white, standard color, select color, or premium color bookblock.
· Find the book type in the LSI Product List.
· If the Batch Code listed on the last page of the book is equal to or greater than the "Batch Number" noted in the Product List, then the book is certified as specified in the table.
· If the Batch Code listed on the last page of the book is less than the "Batch Number" noted in the Product List, then the book is not certified.
