The sad story part is what happened to the West End of Boston where this church is located. Back in 1862 when this church was built the West End of Boston was not unlike the North End or Beacon Hill, both of which stand virtually unchanged now. Like those two areas, the West End was a dynamic and thriving community filled with 4 and 5-story brick buildings which were homes to thousands of families. It was a real neighborhood representing a variety of cultures, including a fairly large Italian population. During the 1950s, 46 acres of the West End were entirely leveled. 3,000 units of housing were destroyed (all those brick buildings), which forced approximately 10,000 people appetizer and went off to get our server. When she came by she was immediately (and for no good reason) defensive and said: "I guess I didn't hear you order an appetizer" and went to show us her order pad indicating nothing was written on it. We told her, well, we definitely ordered calamari. She offered to get a platter of it for us but by then, with our entrees, sitting in front of us, it was beside the point. Everyone makes mistakes and we are understanding of this. In the scheme of things it wasn't that big of a deal. However the server's "oh well" attitude and instantaneously defensive posturing about this lapse was what was so irritating. It is all in how one handles having made an error that inconveniences someone else that makes all the difference. Then, one ever been to Common Ground on 90's night which has varying degrees of success on a given evening. Sometimes the music is just like a time warp and I won't want to leave the floor to get another drink. Other times, I'll put in six song requests and only hear one by begging
