They think so highly of them because people love nostalgia. Fact is, unless you grew up watching those Laver/Borg etc, you probably won't really understand why people are still so fond of them 30-40+ years later. I sometimes catch some old Borg/Connors/Arthur Ashe matches from time to time on ESPN classic, and I honestly can't watch those matches. Really don't mean to disrespect these old greats, but having started to watch tennis at the peak of the Sampras/Agassi era in the mid 90's, I just can't appreciate of players have access to modern technology (poly strings, no more wood frames etc...), so they wouldn't be any good with a wood frame and a full bed of natural gut. But let me turn this the other way around, would these old timers be really able to take advantage of modern technology the same way our current pro's do? I'm not entirely sold on that. It's not because they mastered the wood frames and could hit every shot with a continental grip or so, that they would be able to produce insane spin and power with more extreme grips and new technology. Hitting everything with the same grip vs ompare the conditioning of today's top guys vs 40 years ago, the difference will be very substantial. Not that they weren't in good shape back then, they were, but nowhere near as strong or with stamina level comparable to today. I also believe that because the current top guys are so well trained, it allows them to take even more advantage of the latest technology. Do you really think these guys could swing so hard, with frames/strings so stiff on a continuous basis all year long without injuries if they weren't strong enough? To assume that because one player was successful 40 years ago, that he would automatically be today is a big coin toss. The same can be said of the current top players making a backward step of 40 years and being a failure. Fact is, you just can't fairly compare greats of different era's because so many variables changed.
