When Ben Jones and Nate Poynter discovered that there wasn???t an efficient way to keep track of cellphones sent to recycling facilities, the Indianapolis duo decided to step in. Jones, who has experience in sales, and Poynter, a computer programmer, put their talents together to create Mobile reCell, a software company that establishes a chain of custody for recycled phones. The passion project, which began as a side endeavor in September 2014, is on track to do $1.3 in this year. The growing Carmel company has about 40 clients, including large corporate accounts such as Honeywell and Groupon. ???There are a lot of companies that offer recycling services,??? Jones said. ???We wanted to bring software into it and streamline it.??? Corporate clients often recycle hundreds of phones at a time, and it was not uncommon for 100 or more to go missing in the process, Jones said.

Mobile reCell???s software creates a digital paper chain for a phone???s journey to being recycled. That trail includes collection, packaging and safe transportation. Clients who may have sensitive data on their phones can be assured of where the device is and if it has reached the location where it will be wiped. ???We saw that their frustrations were in the inefficiencies,??? Poynter said. ???It was way too much work for these companies to carry out the process of recycling these phones or getting money for these used phones. ???The process at the time that most companies were doing is they???d have their employees send in their phone to an IT recycling company and there was not tracking and no accountability.??? Companies would receive a check for the phones that were recycled without any proof the devices actually were wiped, Poynter said. There was not faith in the system, he added. Mobile reCell???s tracking software allows users to track phones in real time. This creates a system of accountability, Poynter said. ???Accountability is huge,??? Jones said. ???It???s a lot more than a chain of custody.??? The company also has an upfront, fair market value assessment of mobile devices for customers. That way, businesses know exactly how much money they can recoup for used phones. Customers can go in and see real-time, fair market value of these devices, Jones said. ???They can get a quote for the price of the phone.??? Mobile reCell also shows prices for phones that are worn, and includes depreciating market trends for their customers. ???Companies are starting to realize there is a lot of value left in these mobile devices and tablets,??? Jones said. Looking to the future, Jones and Poynter want to continue growing Mobile reCell and hope that it will be acquired.
