Hidden Treasure

=20

=20

?Canada! You can't be serious!? I sigh= , thinking about Switzerland all day and wanting to take the gondola up the= mountains. Set up my folding chair and breath in the mountain air, while t= yping my next travelling/nature blog in the New Yorker magazine.

= =20

=20

?Do I at least get to pick the ph= otographer to come with me??

=20

=20

?No??, ?I'm confused, Norah is the bes= t in the business from around here, her art gallery depicts the amazing wil= dlife around the world. Not to mention I love writing about nature and trav= el.?

=20

=20

?I leave tomorrow?, are you sending me= an itinerary so I can be somewhat prepared?? ?Ok then, I guess we will see= you in a week!? I hung up the phone and sat in my chair trying to process = what my boss just said. I'm used to going on trips without much notice, in = fact I always have a travel bag packed.  I love my job, and would= n't trade it for the world. I really had my heart set on Switzerland, I hav= e never been on a train through the mountains  before or seen the= Canadian Rockies. I might have to pack a few heavier clothes, after all it= 's Canada. Tomorrow I land in Vancouver and meet the photographer from Mont= real in the morning on the train seat 14 and Luke is seat 15.  Ta= lk about an adventure, my writers block the past two weeks have come to a h= alt, my imagination is in overdrive. I have no worries about meeting a new = photographer, I have met many in my 10 years of travel.

=20

=20

Looking out the window on the plane, t= he mountains are getting closer and closer. Thinking about how beautiful an= d breathtaking they are and to think Canada is our neighbour. I never reall= y think about what North America has to offer for beauty and wildlife. I gu= ess I  just take it for granted, most of my travels are over seas= This beauty is definitely opening my eyes, and now very excited about thi= s adventure.

=20

=20

Bright and early in the morning I was up, packed my day bag with= a sweatshirt, water bottle, a couple of pens and paper. I threw it over my= shoulder and wheeled the suitcase behind. Wow! This train is packed with p= eople but the cubicles make it seem spacious, lots of windows and the staff= are so friendly. I decided to keep my computer and phone in my suitcase, I= wanted to be present during this train ride. I sat in seat 15 because it w= as facing forward, I'm sure the photographer won't mind. I Feel a= tap on my shoulder and see the most handsome man I have ever seen in my li= fe. I felt flush, and could feel my cheeks get red.

=20

=20

He looked at me smiled and said, ? excuse me miss, I think your = sitting in my seat? looking at his ticket.

=20

=20

I said, ? I was just waiting for a photographer and was wanting = to trade him seats, because I like facing  forward?

=20

=20

He looked at me squinted his eyes playfully and said, ? Well mis= s Rebecca, I think we have a problem! I lIke facing forward to? then laughe= d, then sat in his new seat facing me. He reached out his hand ? nice to me= et you Rebecca, I'm Luke your photographer,? I smiled, shook his hand and f= elt butterflies when our hands met. It kinda took me by surprise. =

=20

=20

He looked around and said, ?Wow, I have been on a few trains in = my life, but this one is so fancy, amazing actually. The mountains are beau= tiful. How lucky are we to have a clear day.? Taking out his camera and sna= pping a few pictures.

=20

=20

I looked out the window, ?we sure are,? looking at him smiling. = I had the itinerary on the table in front of me and he said, ? Oh good! I w= as going to grab this at the hotel and I was running a bit late. Do you min= d if I take a look?. I passed the papers to him and said, ?of course, we ar= e in this together!?

=20

=20

?Looks like we have an all day trip to Kamloops and on the way c= limb the Fraser Canyon, and later pass By Hells Gate.? He looked at me, ?He= lls gate has some fascinating facts about how the railway was constructed, = and from videos I have watched, the rushing water below is mesmerizing.?

=20

=20

This guy sure does his homework, I like him! I said, ?I was told= two days ago that I was going on this train ride through the Rockies becau= se my boss wanted a story in the magazine I work for?.

=20

=20

?Cool, you like adventure and you are spontaneous,? looking at m= e closely nodding his head, ?very hard qualities to find, this is going to = be fun! Are you going on all of the adventures??

=20

=20

? What adventures, there is more than being on the train? I have= n't had a chance to look yet!?, my heart beating fast!

=20

=20

?You know bungee jumping, walking on a suspension bridge ove= r a waterfalls, scaling down one of the mountains in a small harness.? He w= as smiling at me.

=20

=20

I said, ?all of it?, hoping he was bei= ng playful.

=20

=20

?No, it was a test? and you passed wit= h flying colours!?

=20

=20

?I didn't realize this was a test,? lo= oking at him with my eyebrows raised. We both laughed.

=20

=20

He was now studying the papers in his = hands. ?Today is a full day on the train and end in Kamloops and have suppe= r in our hotel. Tomorrow we have another train ride to Jasper and arrive in= the afternoon to sight see and wonder around shopping and whatever we want= ! The next day is a side by side motorcycle tour of the Athabaska Falls, Me= dicine Lake, and Maligne Canyon and cruise along the mountains! ?Wow, that = sounds cool.' ?Ooooo.... there is a skywalk' over the mountain with a glass= bottom, we have to try to fit that in! Wow this is incredible!!?=20

=20

?Day 5 we arrive in Lake Loise, which I have heard so much about= ?It's turquise waters are breathtaking in pictures I can wait to see it!' = Oh and it sais here for an additional cost we can take a ?helicopter flight= to see more glaciers and waterfalls.' I hope you will join me? he said loo= king over the papers.

=20

=20

?I wouldn't miss it for the world? I replied! ?Sounds amazing!

=20

=20

Looking back at the paper he said ?There is more, Day 6 in the a= fternoon we head to Banff on a transfer for more sights, a slower pace town= which we get to explore?. He looked at me over the papers, and said, ? you= told me you wanted to take a gondola ride up the mountains, ?well it's not= Switzerland,? but they are offering it in Banff!?

=20

=20

?Your kidding?, I was almost jumping out of my seat!<= /p>=20

=20

?Would I kid you?, with a wink, ?I'm with you and will take plen= ty of pictures while you create your magic of words!?

=20

=20

?Then the next day we depart in Calgary?. I was craving more, an= d wanted this trip to last forever!! In my dreams I may visit again with th= is beautiful man.

=20

=20

?Really? That all sounds amazing! I may need a bit of encouragem= ent on the skywalk but it all sounds amazing. Three days a go I was picturi= ng myself going up in a gondola in Switzerland, and was very disappointed w= hen I heard I was coming here! I am so excited!!? Looking out the window, t= he views were incredible. I couldn't wait to go to the hotel to type in my = computer of all of the notes I was taking!

=20

=20

We were approaching Kamloops, and I felt myself getting excited = to see all of the views and the mountains in the backdrop!

= =20

=20

I stepped off the train and the smell of the mountain air hi= t me, it was so pure, the intensity of freshness and beauty. The lights, th= e snow tipped mountains were vibrant almost iridescent behind the vast wood= lands. I stood on the top step looking outwards stopped in time. Nothing co= uld ever prepare me for the picturesque view unfolding in front of my eyes!=

=20

=20

I heard clicking and snapped out of my trans. Luke was taking pi= ctures and one of me. He outstretched his hand and said, ?my lady? smiled, = and helped me with my luggage. I new at that instant that I was in for an a= dventure of a life time with the most handsome man I have ever seen. I coul= dn't wait to go up the gondola and write about this most amazing little pie= ce of hidden treasure the world needs to see!

=20

=20

Douglas had been downsized. He was informed during the company m= orning meeting. He had one last chance to turn it around before he would be= reassigned. Reassignment at his age was never good. He has to hit his targ= et sales goal in California.

=20

The company will be paying for his tra= vel expense. Douglas was excited it has been months since he had been on an= all expense paid trip. He was equally excited about flying first class. Do= uglas thanked them for the opportunity and asked what time his flight left.= Joe Conley the CEO took great pleasure in telling Douglas that he will be = traveling by train.

=20

The train hurl down the track exceedin= g speeds of 80 miles per hours at one point. It is a rustic passenger train= with a dining and sleeping area for weary travelers, often on their next b= ig business venture.

=20

The train while well maintained has be= gun to show signs of wear and tear. Compared to the newer models the train = is wrought and small in size.

=20

At full capacity the roaring dust of f= reight holds a maximal of 120 passengers ad 15 crew members. Today, the tra= in is at full capacity. Douglas Mortimere McGhee is on the train heading to= San Francisco. His sales has been way down and as part of his "punish= ment" his usual means of traveling onboard of a Delta Boeing 747 in fi= rst class has been suspended. Low number means low traveling mode.=20

It was Douglas who had coined the sayi= ng; once at the top of his game, head of the food chain. But, in recent mon= ths he hasn't come any where close to hitting his previous numbers.<= /p>=20

Hence, him sitting on a crowded train = with barely enough room to raise his hands to wipe the sweat piping down hi= s forehead.

=20

Douglas motion to one of the attendant= s and inquire about the heat. The man's tells him that the Eldorado Express= drew the short end of the stick this morning and that they are traveling w= ithout air conditioner until they reach their destination in San Francisco.=

=20

Douglas is a married older middle age = gentleman with two children in college and his youngest a senior in high sc= hool. By all accounts Douglas is a good and patient man, but the heat in th= e train and his inability to move about freely is certainly testing him tod= ay.

=20

Douglas had hoped for the window seat = at least that way he could look out the window and commune with nature. But= , he was late arriving at the station and the only available seat was a cra= mped aisle seat.

=20

Douglas clears his throat and ask the man sitting next to him, &= quot;Excuse me sir, do you mind letting the shade up so that I can look out= the window?" The man ignored Douglas. He never looked up from his new= spaper. Douglas thought, maybe he did not hear me. So he clears his throat = again and says, "Excuse me sir, do you mind letting the shade up so th= at I can look out of the window?"

=20

The man rubs the tip of hus fingers together and without loo= king up from hus newspapet or looking at Douglas harshly replies, "The= sun light upsets my migraines." Without any further dialogue the man = returned back to reading his paper.

=20

Douglas tried closing his eyes and ima= gining all of the beautiful trees and flowers, but the heated cramped train= would not allow him to focus.

=20

He summoned the attendants again and a= sked him when will be their next stop. The attendant tells him that he is o= n an express train and that they will not stop until they reach San Francis= co in about another three hours.

=20

Douglas was heart broken he was not us= e to such accommodations. The attendant came back with a drink that Douglas= had not order. He smiles politely at Douglas hands him the drink and says = on the house. Douglas thanks the man profusely he was hoping that the drink= will do the trick and allow him to relax.

=20

The man sitting next to him looks up f= rim his paper and immediately ask the attendant for a drink on "the ho= use" too. The attendant apologize to the man informing him that he is = unable to honor his request, but he will be glad to put in a order with the= wait staff for him.

=20

The man is furious and rants on and on about being mistreated an= d getting the attendant fired. The man does not allow the attendant to offe= r up and explanation.

=20

Douglas says, that he would like to order a turkey sandwich on r= ye bread with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and a pickle.

=20

The attendant ask the man sitting next to Douglas if he should p= ut his order in. The man does not respond and the attendant leaves to put D= ouglas order in.

=20

There is now some friction between Dou= glas and the man. He pulls the shade down further and lean over on Douglas = console when Douglas ask him to move he does so, but with an air of pretens= e. The attendant returns with Douglas sandwich. Douglas pays the bill for t= he sandwich and thanks the attendant.

=20

The man looks at Douglas sandwich and = decides that he would like one too. He asked the attendant to put in an ord= er for him for a turkey sandwich. The attendant sincerely apologized to the= man informing him that the kitchen is temporarily closed as they prepare f= or tonight's dinner.

=20

The man is outraged. He jumps out of h= is seat and pushes pass both Douglas and the attendant and retire to his ro= om. Douglas wished he had a room, but his company did not include one for h= im.

=20

Douglas waited for ten minutes when he= was certain that the man was not going to return he eased into the window = seat and raised the shade high as it would go.

=20

Just as the train was rounding Big Sur, Douglas caught a most wo= nderful sight. He saw the tallest redwood trees and imagined himself in the= midst of them dancing and singing. The further the train traveled the more= illustrious the trees where. Some where so tall that Douglas could not see= the top of them.

=20

He sighed to himself, seeing the redwood trees made everythi= ng better. Suddenly, he was not hot or agitated instead he felt empowered s= itting in the rustic crowded train looking out of the window at the beautif= ul and mighty redwood trees.
