With a violent cough, I wake myself up= from my sick slumber.  I sit upright in my leather recliner, and real= ize that my COVID-19 test results should be emailed to me by now.  Str= etching in my green-plaid pajamas, I pop my fatigued joints and let out wha= t sounds like an aggressive yawn mixed with a sigh of exhaustion.  Wit= h great hesitation, I put my password in the phone, and stop on my home scr= een to think about how ner= vous I am about these results.  My migraines, loss of smell, and const= ant fatigue imply that my test will be positive, but I pray that I just hav= e a bad flu that just happens to be during the pandemic.=   Tapping on the envelope application icon, I open my email to see tha= t there is in fact an email from my local urgent care with the subject ?Her= e Are Your COVID-19 Test Results!?.  With a sigh, I click on the email= , and sure enough, there is a big ?POSITIVE? written across the top of the = included message.

=20

With a thousand thoughts racing through my head, I try to think = of what to do next.  I'm in a state of complete disbelief with fear ri= sing in the back of my mind.  All the cases on the news, all the death= s, and the uncontrollable spreading of the virus that's now infecting me ar= e racing through my mind.  I never would have thought that I would per= sonally catch this virus.  I mean, that kind of stuff just happens to = other people, right?  All the thinking makes my migraine pulsate, and = I realize that I need to break the bad news to my wife, Tara, and our teena= ge daughter Layla.

=20

I put on a face mask so that I don't potentially spread the viru= s to my family, and I call them down.  They respond that they will be = down in a moment, and in bewilderment, I try to think of how I could possib= ly isolate myself from my family to keep them safe.  As I see my conce= rned-looking daughter, followed by my wife, coming down the stairs.  I= t's clear that I have to protect them at all costs.  With a quick ligh= tbulb thought, I conclude that I will go camping in the woods, by myself.&n= bsp; I painfully glance at both of their tan faces, painted with concern, a= s they're aware of the information I've been waiting for all day.  My = heart hurts, as I don't want my beloved girls to feel as terrible as I do.&= nbsp; Sighing deeply yet again, I turn my phone in their direction to show = them my positive test results.  Stepping back, as I am contagious, the= y both begin to bombard me with questions about how I got the virus, who I = got it from, if I will be okay, and a million other things I don't know the= answer to.  I keep my answers to the questions short because I don't = want them to realize how bad I actually feel.  If I let them know how = bad I truly feel, they will not let me isolate in the woods, which could po= tentially result in them becoming ill as well.

=20

Doing my best to keep my answers short, so they don't hear the s= oreness in my throat, I briefly explain to Tara my plans of isolating mysel= f in the woods.  She is wary of it, as she wants to take care of me in= case my sickness worsens.  I lie and do my best to convince her that = other than a small headache I'm asymptomatic.  With a feeling of guilt= washing over me, I continue that since spring is finally blooming outside,= it will be perfect weather for me to camp anyway.  After a bit of con= vincing, Tara hesitantly says that it's alright for me to go camping for a = few days, just enough time for her to disinfect the house for me and make m= e up a bed in the guest room to stay in while I am sick.

=20

In my weak state, it takes me much longer than it would take a h= ealthy person to pack my things for my trip.  In the bed of my truck, = I load up a large cooler of meats, nonperishable snacks, and loads of drink= s.  I toss in my hammock to sleep in, and I bring a backpack of other = necessities like extra clothing, a pocket knife, and even some mouthwash, a= s I plan to be gone for a good three or four days.  I do my best to ig= nore my growing migraine and hop into the truck and drive into the woods.&n= bsp; I drive for no more than five minutes, stopping near a ravine covered = in fallen trees and leaves that once belonged to them.  Stepping out o= f the truck, I look at how beautiful nature around me is, and I'm saddened = by the fact that my sickness makes me incapable of smelling the fresh sprin= g air.  There are already some little yellow flowers beginning to bloo= m in patches around the trees, and some trees even have their little white = buds popping up.

=20

I look around and recognize where I am, and I decide to go to my= usual camping spot - a circular opening that can be found if I climb down = the side of the ravine I'm standing on, up the other side, and hike north f= or about fifteen minutes.  During my walk down and up the ravine I do = my best to ignore my migraine and the overall weakness of my body. = ; I trudge along the desolate path to my destination, longing for health an= d wondering whether or not coming into the wilderness was really a good ide= a with the current state of my health.  I set up my hammock between tw= o trees when I finally arrive at my spot, and prop my backpack and cooler u= p against the tree nearest the foot side of the hammock.  =

=20

Finding firewood isn't difficult at al= l, as there are logs and sticks laying all around the opening.  Thanki= ng mother nature for sparing me the work of searching far for wood, I start= myself a little fire.  I don't put it too close to my hammock, as I'd= really prefer not to end up engulfed in flames.  W= hen I finally set the fire and lay in my hammock, it hits me how sick I fee= l.  I lay in the hammock and yearn for health, and the last thing I se= e before I drift off into an unwell slumber is two birds on the branch dire= ctly above my head.  In my out of sorts state, I think to myself that = it almost looks like the birds are gossiping, two little cardinals facing e= ach other and chirping softly, both staring down at me.

=20

As I'm staring up at the gossiping bir= ds, I'm caught off guard as one makes eye contact with me and asks ?Are you= alright?? in a high-pitched voice, almost that of a parrot, but perhaps a = bit softer.  Thinking that this sickness truly must be getting to me n= ow, I simply ignore the question, when the bird chirps to his friend, who h= ad strayed off among the branches of the tree.  The other bird half fl= ies half hops over to the one who chirped out for him, and together they so= ftly yet suddenly flutter down to me, perching on the side of my hammock.

=20

?Did you hear me, sir?  Are you a= lright??  comes a second, also high-pitched bird's voice.  Panic = immediately rises and my stomach turns as I begin to think that I must be d= reaming, hallucinating, this just can't be happening.  I'd never heard= of hallucination being a COVID side effect, but maybe I had just not read = the right articles.  How can I be imagining this? I= think to myself, breathing harder and listening to my heart beating bellig= erently in my chest.  It just sounded so? real.  I could have swo= rn that bird called his friend over, and I swear I saw his tiny beak part a= s he called out to me.

=20

My whirlwind of thoughts gets interrup= ted by the sound of leaves crunching behind me.  Alarmed, I shoot stra= ight up from my laying position, groaning in agony and the pain the sharp m= ovement has caused me.  I turn around to see a small deer, closer than= I've ever seen one get to a human before.  Before I have the chance t= o react, the deer, too, asks ?Do you need help, sir??, and this time I know= I just can't be hallucinating.  I mean, not one, n= ot two, but three of these woodland animals have just sp= oken to me, offering their concern for my ill state.

=20

Looking more like a deer in the headli= ghts than the actual deer in question, I ask, ?Did you just talk or am I go= ing crazy??

=20

?You aren't crazy.  Are you okay?= ? responds the deer.  The two birds hop down the side of my hammock an= d flutter up to perch their tiny feet on the deer's back.

=20

?You look sick, are you dying?? questi= ons a bird.

=20

?I'm sick? this can't be real, animals= don't talk.  I need to leave, I need to find Tara and go to the hospi= tal? I express, feeling more and more panicked by the second as I begin to = scramble to my feet.

=20

?Well, you're an animal, and you talk,=  don't you?? the young deer inquires.

=20

?You aren't really talking.  I'm = leaving.  Go away!? I anxiously yell, trying to scare the birds away b= y waving my hand around them.  They don't budge.

=20

In an attempt to scramble out of my ha= mmock, I flip the thing over, landing with a thud on the= ground beneath me.  There's now a chorus of the three animals asking = all at once if I am okay and continuing to ask if I need help, though I dec= ide that I am going to ignore them from here on out.  I mean, they can= 't actually be talking to me, they're animals!  This has to all be a d= ream, perhaps I'm truly in my hammock right now, dreaming a dreadful dream&= nbsp;

=20

?Sir, where are you going?  You n= eed to rest!? exclaims a tiny voice from above me.  Looking up I see t= he chubby cheeks of a chipmunk staring down at me with great concern writte= n all over its face.

=20

?All of you stop talking to me!? I yel= l, feeling my lungs and my throat tighten from my sickness as it becomes ha= rder to breathe.  ?I need to get home and get Tara to bring me to the = hospital, I'm hallucinating!?

=20

In my body's fatigued state, the bags = are too heavy for me to carry, and not wishing to be slowed down, I decided= that I will leave them here and come back when I am better.  Right no= w, all I want to do is hike back to my truck and get out of these chaotic w= oodlands as fast as I possibly can.  I tiredly begin to make my way ba= ck, overwhelmed by everything going on around me.  With the birds, dee= r, and now the chipmunk all collectively expressing their concerns and begg= ing me to stay and rest, mixed with the tiring work of trying to walk to th= e ravine, I'm becoming dizzy and my vision becomes spotted.

=20

Under the overwhelming sensations of t= he virus plaguing my body and the animals yelling all around me, I lose my = balance, dizzily tripping over a tree's root and falling into the leaves.&n= bsp; I land on my back, feeling the pain of the tree root I just tripped ov= er now slamming into my shoulders.  I look up to see one of the little= red birds hovering over me, fluttering his wings and looking down at me wi= th great concern.  Until today, I never thought I would know what conc= ern looks like on the face of a bird.

=20

?Are you okay?  Go lay back down!= ? the hovering little creature chirps at me.  Groaning in response, I = feel myself becoming more and more tired.  This is it,&n= bsp;I think to myself.  I'm about to die, and the last thing = I did was talk to a bird.  If I wasn't so physically and mentally exhausted I would be worr= ied sick about my wife and my daughter never finding me.  Mid thought,= I feel my eyes start to droop closed, and the last thing I feel before eve= rything goes pitch black is the small bird perching itself on my upper arm.=

=20

I wake up in my bed, the feeling of the bird's feet perched on m= y arm now replaced with my wife's hand shaking me awake.  Confused, I = look down to find myself dressed back in my green plaid pajamas.  With= my head pounding, I give Tara a perplexed look, and she returns the same t= o me.

=20

?Are you alright, honey?? asks my concerned wife, ?it looked lik= e you were having a bad dream.?  As I sit there looking confused and n= ot responding to her, she goes on to tell me that ever since my ne= gative COVID test results came back, I've been napping all mornin= g.  Negative COVID results?  Trying to make se= nse of her claims, I rack my brain for answers.  The clock on my night= stand telling me it's hardly even one in the afternoon and the absence of m= y previously agonizing migraine tell me that I was simply taking a nap.&nbs= p; Seeing the time, and thinking about everything that has happened to me, = I realize that it was all but a fever dream.

=20

=20

I was walking down the hallway when the bell rang, school was ou= t! FINALLY, I had been waiting for hours! I was EXHAUSTED yet; I was excite= d to go back into the woods like I do every day. Today was special though, = I was even more excited today! I ran to the back of the school where mother= usually picks me up. I was bound to fly right out of that car! we got = stuck in traffic yet finally she had made it home! I rushed into the house = and threw down my bag, I then asked mama if I could go in the forest. She t= old me to be back by dinner. As I entered the woods it started to rain, I t= urned around, but the woods had seemed to shut with branches. I then saw a = bunny; I swear it was talking to me! "Hey, you why are you here! It's = dangerous I say!!!!!" I was confused as i replied, "Huh? Me? Are = you talking to me???" The bunny just stared at me for a while, before = breaking off into a sprint straight to the shadows. I ran after it when it = came upon a few other animals. I wanted to see if i was going insane, so I = quietly said "Hello..?" I heard murmuring and couldn't quite make= out what they were saying. but i was hoping they were NOT saying actual wo= rds!! The rain had escalated into flashes of lights all around the sky. slo= wly following behind the thunder. My mom once told me to count the seconds = in between the lightning and thunder. So that's what i did. I counted, &quo= t;1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7...-," It was odd 10 seconds had passed and nothi= ng.. I continued to count, "21, 22, 23, 24...-" Nothing.. I shrug= ged it off and ran under a large tree with thick branches to shield myself = from the moist rain. and i was almost asleep I heard a noise. It sounded li= ke talking.. I frantically got up and looked around. But all I saw is a lit= tle ladybug. I sarcastically talked to it saying, "Hey, have you seen = anybody around?" I stood in shock as it replies, "No.. just a few= bugs."

=20

Frightened I ran thr= ough all the branches, and hopped over logs, but I tripped, and fell straig= ht on my face. "Is anything broken?? Do you need assistance?" I h= eard a voice say in the vast sea of trees. "H-huh?" was all I cou= ld say, followed by, "Who are you!? JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" 'You = don't have to be so rude" the voice replies. "Why I'm Finney, Fin= ney the rabbit!" 'THE RABBIT?!?" I shout. I look around keeping m= y senses sharp. But all I saw small little bunny with brown splotches over = his eyes. In my opinion they looked like little glasses. I slowly walk up t= o it, but it runs and hides behind a tree. "H-hey.. It's all right, I = won't hurt you." The bunny trots up to me, "Are you ok..? you had= quite a tumble!" I was sure I was going insane! "I'm alright.., = thanks" is all I could slip out of my mouth. Still confused I asked th= e little bunny where the woods end. "Huh? Don't you know? these woods = go on forever! Once you enter you can't get out! Or so, that's what I'd bee= n told." I was in shock, I then asked how I could talk to it, but the = bunny cut me off and changed the subject. "SOOO nice weather we're hav= ing," 'It's raining." I reply in a dense tone. The bunny giggles = in embarrassment just like I did once in 4th grade... I accidentally wet my= self in front of the class.. Yuck. "Hey SOOO.., Where are your parents= ?" Finney asked attempting to avoid awkwardness, Though, it didn't wor= k very well. "My parents-.., MY PARENTS!! I TOLD MOM ID BE BACK BY DIN= NER!! What time is it Finney!" 'Time? Ohhh!! We don't have time here!&= quot; I was in shock, I hoped I was dreaming. I turned to Finney and asked = him to pinch me. He bit me instead. "OWW" I yelped. "What yo= u told me to." Finney replies. So, I'm not dreaming.. had to find that= out the hard way. As I look around, I realize the sun has set. I sit under= an old maple tree and grab a few large leaves to lay on top of. I curled u= p into a little ball and started to notice tears running down my face. &quo= t;Are you all, right? did the fall hurt you?" Finney asks. "I-I'm= fine- I want Momma back" I reply holding back tears and preventing me= from voice cracking. "It's all right. We will find your mother."= Finney states while clearing his voice. All I do is grab him and hug him t= ight. He looked as if he had never been hugged before. Sooner or later, I f= ind myself asleep still under that Ol' maple. and Finney was curled up next= to me. as I got up, I sprinted towards a small flicker of light, it kind o= f looked like a flashlight. As I ran towards it, I hear more voices. I= was OVERJOYED yet I was disappointed when it was just a fox talking to a s= mall little rat. "Hello?" I say hoping to ask for directions home= They both stare at me for a while. before breaking out into laughter= "BUAHHAHA, FINNEY STOP TRYING TO BE A HUMAN IT WONT WORK!! Get out of that dumb costume!!"= ; The fox says. "Finney? You guys are friends with Finney?" Well = i was expecting them to say that they were but all they said was, "Him= ? EW I'd rather DIE!" Finney hops up to me whilst they stand in shock.= "I-it's a real- real- HUMAN!?" 'Yessir, and it's MY bestie."= ; Finn replies. The fox starts to apologize but I stop him. "It's alri= ght.." I said hoping to clear the mood. I'm a friendly human, and so a= re all my parents. But I was quite angry when they made fun of Finney! I ha= d just realized I needed to leave the woods; I asked the fox if he had = known the exit. The fox says the same thing I heard Finney say a while back= "There's no end that I know of! But if you go to the old geezer down= the path, he could tell Ya!" I was confused so I asked what he meant = but he just handed me a piece of paper and ran away. It was crumbling and o= ld, but it looked to have nothing in it. I asked Finney about it, but he sa= id he had no clue. I walked down a clear pathway when I came across a small= creek-like thing. I accidentally dropped the paper, and when it touch= ed the water, the entire creek started to glow! I hurried to grab the paper= back. whilst in shock I couldn't process what just happened. The paper now= had some sort of map on it. I had assumed I should follow it, i mean what = else was there to do! There is talking animals, magic rivers, never-ending = forests! So might as well follow a strange map that a FOX! Gave me. "Y= ou shouldn't follow it girl, that fox will do you no good." Finny said= Did he just call me girl?? "I have a name you know, Its Kora." = He stared at me and then apologized. I continued walking but Finney seemed hesitant. "Are you co= ming??" I ask. "S-sure yea WAIT UP!!" He said in a nervous t= one. I giggle as I skipped through the woods. Ever since I was a child= I had always been interested in nature. And now, I was surrounded by it! w= e came across an area where it seemed to be a river, with the stream w= e had followed flowing into it. The map only said to follow the creek. well= , what now? I sat down and started thinking when Finney snatched the paper = right out of my hands! "HEY!!" I shouted, "Put it in the wat= er!" Finney replied. I had remembered what happened last time, so I tr= usted him. I slowly put the paper in the water. But this time, nothing = happens. I dipped it a few more times. Nothing... I was a little skeptical = it ever even happened. Out of rage I threw the paper on the ground. The pap= er glowed! Just like in the river! It then pointed us across the river. I w= as confused. But then Finney jumped straight into the water! But did not fa= ll in.. he was floating above the river. I slowly walked towards him and st= epped on the river. I was dry. I could see the stream flowing below us and = fish jumped up and right back into the water. I didn't know why i couldn't = fall in.. "We have the map
