ptuously. The sound of sirens and screeching tires created an ear-splitting=
 symphony. A symphony they performed almost every day. Rain started to pour=
 down on the dirty streets and I pulled my hood up over my hair. I sighed a=
ngrily before stopping in front of the overbearing and dooming building of =
my place of work. It looked much like a prison in the dim light of early mo=
rning. It was surrounded by other prison-like buildings on every side. I cl=
enched my fists before stomping my way through the front door. I shook the =
cold rain from my coat before taking my insignificant seat at my insignific=
ant desk next to my insignificant coworkers. I dazed my way through the day=
 as usual. When the sun had set once again I picked up my things and put my=
 damp coat back on. I made my way through the building. I reached the clock=
-out desk. On the notification board behind the secretary was an ad for a t=
ropical vacation that would be paid for by the company. I realized I had no=
t wanted something more than I wanted to go on that tropical vacation. I ha=
d never wanted to get away from my life and from the suffocating city more =
than I did now. I turned to the secretary,
         "Is the trip still available?" I asked her. She shook her pretty c=
urls.          "No sorry, Jamie Noor took the last slot earlier today." She=
 said monotonously. I didn't expect the disappointment that filled me at th=
ose words. I swiped my card and walked out of the building. I walked on the=
 sidewalk, I wasn't watching where I was going when I stepped into a large =
puddle. I cursed as I felt my socks soaking in the grimy water. Suddenly I =
was grabbed from the side and pulled into an alleyway. A skinny man held a =
knife to my throat.          "Give me your money!" He spat. I took a shallo=
w breath in fear that if I breathed too deep the knife would sink into my s=
kin. I felt around me before feeling my fingers close around a rock. I smas=
hed the rock into the guy's head and grabbed the knife from his hands. I ra=
n out of the alleyway and back onto the main street. I ran until I couldn't=
 run anymore. My side was aching and I was heaving. I stopped to lean again=
st the wall of a brownstone when I saw a familiar head poke out of a cab. J=
amie Noor. The idea of the joy that I would feel by feeling the sun on my f=
ace and the sand between my toes entered my head. I saw myself in Jamie's p=
lace on the list and as he approached me something took hold of me and soon=
 the long knife that I didn't know I was still holding was buried in his st=
omach. I held his dripping body in my arms as I saw his blue eyes turn glas=
sy. I wasted no time before dragging his cooling body in between two browns=
tones. I wiped the blood off of me as much as I could before continuing on =
my way home. I kept looking back in fear that someone had seen me. But most=
ly I was thinking about the luxurious trip I was about to go on. As soon as=
 I got home I started packing. I would need a swimsuit of course. No need f=
or a coat where I was going, I thought gleefully. I was done with the cold.=
 I was done with the rain.          The next day the news of Jamie's death =
was like a black curtain over the office. Not that it felt much different t=
o me, it felt like a funeral every day. I approached the secretary's desk,
         "I suppose Jamie won't be using his spot on the vacation anymore?"=
 I asked lightly. She sniffed.          "The board is considering canceling=
 it out of respect for Jamie. Our coworker was murdered you know" She said.=
 I frowned.          "Yes, that does seem to be what people are saying," I =
said through clenched teeth. She eyed me before sighing.          "Name?" S=
he asked as she started typing on her computer. I gave her my name and phon=
e number. "The plane tickets will be texted to you later tonight or tomorro=
w. The trip starts on Monday," She said defeatedly. I nodded and tried to h=
ide my grin. Later that day I received the plane tickets. I would be leavin=
g in less than three days. I thought once again of the beautiful sights I w=
as going to see. The things I would do. I would swim amongst the dolphins, =
I would gaze upon reefs of coral. I would star gaze and drink pina coladas.=
 Somthing I had not had in many years. The last time I had a pina colada wa=
s when my twenty-first birthday when my grandmother had taken me out to the=
 beach. My grandmother always loved the beach.          I boarded a small p=
lane. It was a full flight so I was forced to sit in a cramped middle seat =
next to a snoring man who took up half of my seat as well as his own. The w=
oman sitting next to me seemed nice enough, she watched shows on her tablet=
 the whole way and did not share a single word with me. I was fine with tha=
t as all I wanted to do was think about the island I was about the go to. W=
hen I exited the plane I stretched my legs and looked out the window, expec=
ting to see a beautiful ocean. I saw corn. All I could see was corn. This w=
as NOT the island I was supposed to be on. I grumbled before walking over t=
o a help desk. The woman behind the desk looked very bored. I stood in line=
 impaitenly.          "Where are we?" I asked her when I got to the front o=
f the line. She looked up from her computer screen and raised an eyebrow.  =
        "Indiana" She said tiredly.          "I am supposed to be on a trop=
ical island right now. Why am I not there?" I spat. I was getting fed up wi=
th this woman. She was not ver helpful. She rolled her eyes before respondi=
ng,
         "No flights leave for a tropical island" She said condesendedly. I=
 gwafed. Where had those tickets taken me!? I glance down at my ticket and =
gasped. They told me I was supposed to be in Indiana. I pulled out the flye=
r and as my eyes scanned the paper my anger grew ten fold. The flyer was ad=
vertising a trip to a Tropical Island Hotel in Fort Springs Indiana. I had =
misread the flyer. In my defense, the hotel part was in very small print.  =
        "Where can I find a pilot?" I asked her sweetly, trying to calm my =
anger. She raised another skeptical eyebrow before pointing to her right. T=
he Pilots Lounge. I rushed over to it. Nothing was going to stop me from go=

               A shout from the crow?s nest, and then, they saw him come up=
 from the sea foam. His head was all they could manage to see. Someone flun=
g out the life tube, the white still there, the red faded from the sun. It =
was hard to see him bobbing up and down in the waves, while the rain still =
spattered the fishermen, and the boat rocked back and forth in the torrent.=
 Lightning still flashed. It took everyone on the rope to pull him back to =
the fishing boat. He was weak and soaked through. He coughed a lot. The cap=
tain told everyone to put the man into his chamber and see to it that he ha=
d a pair of the driest clothes they could find. The captain promised they w=
ould see the light of day.                He kept his word. The sun rose, a=
nd with it, so did his crew. All except for one. The man who fell overboard=
 in the storm the night before was still in bed. The cabin boy brought him =
some whiskey and eagerly the man took it and drank deeply. The man coughed.=
 He didn?t look well. One could see that. He was pale and almost gray in co=
lor. Even his blond hair had a tinge of sea foam green. He was burning with=
 a fever and was extremely weak still.                The captain had a swe=
et spot for this man. The man was his cousin Charles DeGrave. Charles came =
on the fishing expedition because he actually was the investor. Captain was=
 known as Captain DeGrave; no one knew his first name. When the cabin boy t=
old the captain of his cousin?s health, he knew he had no choice but to fin=
d the next port with a hospital or health clinic. He talked with the naviga=
tor, but the man informed him that the storm had blown them off course and =
it would take a while to get back on.                Captain DeGrave called=
 a meeting of the fishermen in the main galley and asked if anyone knew of =
medicine, of herbal-ism, or even magic. He needed help in healing the man t=
hat fell overboard the night before. It was urgent. One person spoke up. It=
 was a woman who worked in the kitchen. She knew some magic from her homela=
nd. It would require some herbs and some fresh ingredients that they could =
get in the nearest port. They were close to a place they could get them. Sh=
e knew the islands here.                The captain did not realize what a =
resource he had right before his very eyes. Of course Ramona could help the=
m. He promised to buy her whatever she needed, she just needed to ask. At t=
he next port, she bought several chickens, one goat, a dove, and a new sach=
et of some herbs. She told the rest of the crew that she would need the kit=
chen to herself for one evening, and no matter what they heard, no one was =
to come in and interrupt her magic. Everyone was in agreement. Some of the =
fishermen already knew she was a sorcerer and were afraid to bother her whe=
n she was in the kitchen cooking alongside the chef.                The nex=
t morning, she had a small vial of ashes. She placed the ashes on Charles? =
head and said something that was not in English. It sounded African or exot=
ic. She told Captain DeGrave that if Charles did not get better within thre=
e days that he would either die or he would become a hollow one. Then, she =
wrapped her shawl tighter, asked to be left to rest, and to be told the out=
come. Until then, no one should bother her. She retired to her small cupboa=
rd off of the kitchen.                The rest of the fishermen did their b=
est to go about their daily routine the next three days but it was difficul=
t. They knew that there was something strange going on in the belly of thei=
r boat. That much was true. Captain DeGrave was angry. Ramona had said noth=
ing about the chance that Charles could become something else. What was tha=
t? If he was hollow that did not sound good at all. He sat by Charles? beds=
ide a good portion of the day, when he wasn?t checking on the stock of the =
fish, or the navigation, or taking care of himself.                He somet=
imes wondered if he shouldn?t have just let Charles die in that sea. He sti=
ll would get his financial backing. But now, now he?d have to worry about l=
etting his cousin become something otherworldly.                The third d=
ay came and Charles began to vomit up this black slime that looked like old=
 blood. It was rank. Those that came to discard it were doing their best to=
 keep from choking on their own vomit. He also had excrement come out much =
the same, and the crew?s reaction well, they did vomit trying to remove it =
from the room. The captain had reconciled to himself that Charles must be d=
ying. Then, Charles started to speak again. It had been days since he had l=
ast spoken. He asked for water.                Captain DeGrave looked at hi=
s cousin and saw that the man was still gray, still discolored. He looked m=
ore withered, like a tree without rain.                ?How do you feel?? C=
aptain DeGrave asked.                ?Hungry,? the man replied.            =
    ?Do you feel strong or weak?? the captain asked while fetching a clean =
glass of water from a pitcher.                Taking the glass of water, Ch=
arles replied, ?I feel...I feel...weak??
               ?Just drink the water you asked for.?
               Charles tried a sip of the water then he spat it out. He let=
 his hand go limp and the glass tumbled from his hand, then crashed to the =
floor, where it splintered into pieces on the wooden floor boards.         =
       ?Are you trying to poison me?? Charles asked.                ?I?ll g=
o fetch, Ramona. She?ll know what to do,? Captain DeGrave said hastily remo=
ving himself from the room. He told the man at the door who had been guardi=
ng the room to fetch the cabin boy, and have him clean the glass on the flo=
or.                When Ramona and the Captain returned to Charles? room th=
ey saw quite a sight. There was Charles with his back turned from the door,=
 sitting on the bed. They saw the cabin boy limp on the floor where the gla=
ss had fallen. A pool of blood was forming around his head from a gash in h=
is neck. The blood was still slightly bubbling.                ?Something t=
old me to drink from his neck. So while he was down there on all fours gath=
ering bits of the glass, I hit him over the head with my bedpan. Then, I ma=
de a slice in his neck with the glass and started to drink.?
               The voice was coming from Charles. Though he was not moving.=
                ?We?re too late. You were supposed to come get me when the =
transition was happening,? Ramona whispered to the captain.                =
?How was I supposed to know. I thought he was just transitioning to death,?=
 the captain whispered back. ?Besides, if you knew this is how it would end=
 being Hollow, how were you going to make it work??
               ?I was going to bring him the chicken blood, and the goat bl=
ood,? she whispered back. ?What else did you think it was for??
               ?Magic?? he said.                Ramona just shook her head.=
 ?Now he is just going to want human blood. We cannot permit him to exist.?
               With that, Captain DeGrave and Ramona created a quick plan. =
They had just enough time to make it work while Charles was still discoveri=
ng what was happening to himself. They told the guard at the door. Ramona k=
new that Charles was no longer hungry at that moment, or he would have alre=
ady tried to find more blood. They were able to exit the room without Charl=
es noticing and created a barricade on his door. A new guard took the other=
 one?s place. Everything was set. There was silence in the room for a long =
time, until they heard scratching at the door. The scratching became kickin=
g then, pounding. Charles started to yell.                It was time. The =
captain was at the other side of the door with a knife at his arm. He was r=
eady. His heart was beating quickly. His hands were shaking. He nodded at t=
he guard. The guard let the barricade down. The door broke with the superna=
tural strength of the captain?s cousin. Charles? eyes seem to slightly glow=
 green. He eyed the closest person to him, which was the guard, and sensing=
 his move, Captain DeGrave, sliced his arm. Fresh blood poured down to his =
hand.                Charles was on him like a wolf to prey. The guard had =
to act fast. He and the captain used all the strength that they had to keep=
 Charles moving while he bit down onto the flesh before him. While still up=
right and walking, they walked together to the edge of the boat. The guard =
pushed the two men right off the edge of the boat, both of them were linked=
 together by mouth and arm. They fell with a splash into the sea.          =
      The last thing that Captain DeGrave saw before he went under into tha=
t wet cemetery where many of his ancestors lay before him were the stars in=
 the sky. He held out his arm as Charles ate his very last meal. Charles ga=
ve to his cousin Martin his very last dollar for this shipping expedition, =
and it seemed that fate would have it, that Martin would give Charles his l=
ast drop of blood. Funny how fate worked. He should have known not to go wi=
shing on stars. Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I=
