If you have ever used Multi-Channel Fulfillment for products that are large but light, then you are probably familiar with this concept. But if you deal strictly with orders on Amazon.com, this might be new to you. Here's an explanation of how Dimensional Weight is determined and calculated. To begin, Dimensional Weight only applies to Oversize Units. However, not all Oversize Units will be billed according to the Dimensional Weight. The industry standard for carriers is to use the dimensional weight when the size of a package is disproportionate to the weight. For instance, a package of bubble wrap might weigh 4 pounds, but the volume of the packaged product could take up as much room as another product that weighs 10 times as much. The industry standard takes into account the total volume when charging for the weight. FBA calculates Dimensional Weight if the packaged volume of a Unit (length x width x height) exceeds 5,184 cubic inches. For products sold on Amazon.com, the Dimensional Weight is calculated by dividing the volume in cubic inches by 166. The formula is as follows: Dimensional Weight = Length x Width x Height / 166 If Dimensional Weight is greater than the packaged Unit Weight, then the Dimensional Weight is used to calculate the Weight Handling fee, and if not, the Unit Weight is used to calculate the Weight Handling fee. The largest a Standard-Size Unit can be is 18" x 14" x 8" or 2,016 cubic inches, which is less than half the minimum volume (5,184 cubic inches) to require Dimensional Weight. To give you a general idea, a cube measuring 17.31" on all sides is approximately 5,186 cubic inches, which exceeds the minimum volume. Example: A printer that weighs 26.95 pounds with packaged dimensions of 20.6" x 20.5" x 12.9" has a volume of 5,447.67 cubic inches, which exceeds the minimum of 5,184 cubic inches. If the Dimensional Weight is more than 26.95 pounds, we will use the Dimensional Weight. In this case, the volume (5,447.67 pounds) divided by 166 equals 32.81 pounds, so the Dimensional Weight will be used. FBA Merchant Update

FBA Fulfillment Fees changed February 1, 2012

On February 1, 2012, our fulfillment fees and how we calculate weight for Units sold on Amazon.com changed. FBA storage, order handling, optional services, and Multi-Channel Fulfillment fees were not affected by these changes.

The following fees went into effect on February 1, 2012:

The Pick & Pack per Unit fee is $1 for all Standard-Size Units ordered on Amazon.com.

The Pick & Pack per Unit fee for Oversize Units ordered on Amazon.com is $6.00.

We will use the Outbound Shipping Weight rounded up to the nearest pound to calculate the Weight Handling Fee and decrease the per-pound fee from $0.40 to $0.37.

For Oversize Units, we will use either the weight of the Unit or the Dimensional Weight of the Unit to determine the Outbound Shipping Weight.

For full details, please review the help section Fulfillment by Amazon Pricing Changes.

FBA Inventory Placement changes effective February 25, 2012

Effective February 25, 2012, inventory may be assigned to multiple fulfillment centers at the ASIN level during the shipment creation process to better enable product availability at the customer’s preferred shipping speed. We anticipate that both you and customers who purchase your products will benefit from this change, including for the following reasons.

Products located in multiple fulfillment centers can gain a competitive advantage over products located in a single fulfillment center. Order cut-off times for Prime and expedited shipping can be extended by as much as three hours with inventory in multiple fulfillment centers, so your offers will more likely be available for last-minute orders in more locations.

Products can be available for fulfillment to customers sooner than if you shipped them to one fulfillment center, and we then transported them to other fulfillment centers.

The impact of regional and local events on your products will be reduced. Events such as snowstorms, flooding, and earthquakes can disrupt transportation in a region or local fulfillment center. Having your inventory in multiple locations increases our ability to ship orders to customers on time even if this type of event occurs.

Please visit Inventory Placement for more information. If you still have questions, please contact Seller Support.
