Are You In-Stock for “Holiday Halo” Sales?

While the pace may slow for most sellers after the holidays, experienced sellers know that January can be a strong revenue month. Consumers are not only looking for post-holiday deals, but they’re also cashing in on gift cards received. Gift cards gained steam this year as a present of choice: when the National Retail Federation surveyed shoppers during the most recent holiday season, four out of five said they planned to purchase gift cards for friends and family—intending an average spend of $163 in gift cards per shopper, the highest amount in the survey’s history.

Keeping a close eye on your inventory levels is as important as ever to avoid missed sales opportunities from customers with Amazon gift cards in hand, and also with Valentine’s Day around the corner. How do you make sure you stay in stock with the right amount of inventory?

Adjust your projections. If you’ve been selling on Amazon for at least a year, review your past sales and trajectory to project your likely sales for Q1 2014. Access a wealth of analytics to view or download in your Business Reports (sign-in required).

Allow time for shipping and receiving. Don’t cut replenishments so close to the wire that one unexpected winter storm may derail your ability to sell. When sending shipments to Amazon, build in time for carrier delivery and receiving activities at our fulfillment centers.

Subscribe to alerts. Sellers with Professional accounts can receive close-to-real-time inventory replenishment recommendations through Amazon Selling Coach in Business Reports or through the Recommendations API in Marketplace Web Services (MWS).

To shore up your FBA inventory, go to your Manage Inventory page (sign-in required), click Inventory Amazon Fulfills, then select “Send/Replenish Inventory” from the drop-down menu.

January 2014 Newsletter

Greetings from Fulfillment by Amazon

Happy New Year, FBA sellers! We’ve closed out a milestone year with more new sellers using FBA worldwide and strong sales by our sellers. In fact, we shipped more FBA units worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2013 than the total number of FBA units combined in all of 2009 and 2010. We’re excited about driving growth in our service and of our sellers’ businesses.

Just as many of you have made resolutions for the new year, we're also thinking of the ways we can help make 2014 more successful for our sellers than ever. We're focused on streamlining FBA processes—and we’re already taking steps to do this through changes to shipment creation and inventory management. We want to provide ways to help make your online business more efficient with useful tools and relevant notifications. Finally, in 2014, we resolve to work harder than ever to deliver you value.

Here’s to a successful year of selling on Amazon.

Holiday Purchases Returnable Through January

With the end of the holiday selling season, remember that Amazon’s extended holiday return policy extends the return window for most products shipped between November 1 and December 31 to January 31 of the following year. This means that many of your orders from this most recent holiday season may be returnable until January 31, 2014.

To ensure a great customer experience, which ultimately drives customer satisfaction and loyalty and helps make FBA offers more attractive, Amazon customer support may make case-by-case exceptions and accept returns for orders fulfilled through FBA that may be outside these guidelines.

However, did you know that we now automatically reimburse your FBA account for any customer returns accepted more than 30 days past our stated returns window in most cases? With the extended holiday returns window, this means that you will automatically be reimbursed for eligible returns accepted after March 3, 2014. Also, if a customer who has been issued a refund does not send the product back to the fulfillment center within 45 days after they request a return, we will automatically credit your seller account for the product in most cases.

Make sure to review our updated Help page, Customer Returns for Orders Placed on Amazon.com.

Changes to Shipment Creation and Inventory Management in Seller Central

Over the last several months, we've made some important additions to Seller Central based on feedback from FBA sellers. These changes streamline two key sets of tasks: shipment creation and inventory management.

Now that we’re able to offer these improved tools, important new Seller Central enhancements will only be made available through the new shipment creation and inventory tools. We’ll be phasing out the original shipment workflow on March 31, 2014.

The new Shipment Creation Workflow features a redesign to improve ease of use, reduce steps, and better align with Amazon requirements for shipments to our fulfillment centers. Don’t delay your switch—access to new Seller Central enhancements and services that we launch in the coming months will be available exclusively through the new Shipment Creation Workflow.

In addition, key inventory management features have been consolidated in a single view on the Manage Inventory page. This means you no longer have to go to the Manage FBA Inventory page for your FBA listings and separately to the Manage Inventory page for your self-fulfilled Amazon listings, and you can preview Selling on Amazon and Fulfillment by Amazon fees for all your listings in one place.

We’ll continue to add new functionality to the Manage Inventory page so you'll soon be able to do everything you're accustomed to doing on the Manage FBA Inventory page, and more. The Manage FBA Inventory page will be retired later this year.

Learn more about these Seller Central changes.

FBA Long-Term Storage Fee: February 15 Deadline

Now's a good time to check your fulfillment center inventory and, if necessary, remove any old inventory or re-price it to sell. The next FBA Inventory Cleanup will be conducted on February 15, 2014. Inventory that has been in our fulfillment centers for 365 days or more as of February 15, 2014, will be assessed a Long-Term Storage Fee.

To avoid having to worry about future inventory cleanups, go to your Fulfillment by Amazon Settings to set up Automated Long-Term Storage Removals.

You can also use the Recommended Removal report to easily identify and remove Units that may be assessed Long-Term Storage Fees. This report auto-calculates on an ASIN-by-ASIN basis the current number of units you would need to remove (assuming no further sales of your inventory) to avoid Long-Term Storage Fees, and it will pre-populate a removal request for those units if you choose to remove them.

You can access the Recommended Removal report in Seller Central by going to Reports > Fulfillment > Inventory > Recommended Removal and requesting a download. If you receive a "No results found" message when you run the Recommended Removals report, it means that you currently have no inventory that will be charged the Long-Term Storage Fee.

Learn more about the Long-Term Storage Fee.

Help Get Your Inventory Closer to Customers with Less Effort

You already send your FBA inventory to multiple locations to speed availability to as many customers as possible, and Amazon may distribute inventory throughout our network to optimize even further. Did you know about an additional lever that gets your inventory closer to your customers? Enabling Stickerless, Commingled Inventory for your products doesn’t require additional effort in sending shipments to Amazon—and in fact could also save you time and cost.

What is Stickerless, Commingled Inventory?

All products that enter Amazon fulfillment centers require a means of identifying the product and its ownership. Often, a product is identified with a label you can print from your Seller Central Account. For some products sold by multiple sellers, you can elect to “commingle” your inventory by enabling the Stickerless, Commingled Inventory setting. When you choose to commingle inventory, your products become interchangeable with the same products from other sellers for both order fulfillment and removals.

How it works

With the Stickerless, Commingled Inventory setting, your eligible units will not require unit labels. For the purposes of order fulfillment and removals, eligible units are treated as identical to units of the same product from other sellers who have also enabled Stickerless, Commingled Inventory.

When a customer orders one of these products from you, you are the seller of record, but the unit used to fulfill the order may have been originally sourced from another seller's (or Amazon's own) inventory.

Why sellers choose to commingle

Stickerless, Commingled Inventory eliminates the need for you to label your eligible products with unit labels. It also helps Amazon to place units closer to customers, which helps to get your orders to customers faster.

Although products sent to Amazon as commingled inventory are virtually pooled with those of other sellers, we track which seller shipped the units to our fulfillment centers, which helps us minimize any disruption to other sellers if there is an issue with a specific unit.

Learn more about Stickerless, Commingled Inventory, including how to determine product eligibility and how to enable this setting.
