"E-Commerce-Ready": What It Is and Why It Matters

Did You Know?

You can use Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Amazon Partnered Carriers for a shipment of any number of pallets – even one.

As a rule of thumb, if your shipment is more than 150 pounds, you should think about evaluating LTL rates versus small parcel delivery rates, because you may get better rates with LTL. The only eligibility requirement for using the LTL service is that you have either a dock door or a forklift to assist in placing your pallets onto the truck.

For more information on LTL shipments with Amazon Partnered Carriers, visit the Partnered Carrier Options Help page.

Multi-Channel Fulfillment Now Offers More Flexibility for Off-Amazon Orders

FBA sellers using Multi-Channel Fulfillment now have the ability to "Hold" inventory related to a pending off-Amazon order.

For example, if you receive an order from your own retail website, you can now enter that order information immediately in Seller Central and place a hold on the inventory while you verify payment information. This action ensures that the inventory is set aside and not accidentally sold. If you have not removed the hold on your order after two weeks, it will be removed automatically, and the held quantity will again be eligible for future orders.

For more information, please visit the How to Create a Fulfillment Order Using Multi-Channel Fulfillment Help page.

Two FBA Reports Now Update with Same-Day Shipment Data

Two Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) reports now allow you to see shipment data from the same day you download the reports, so you don’t have to wait a full day to see updated information.

The Amazon Fulfilled Shipments report and Customer Shipment Sales report show information shortly after a unit has been shipped to a customer—typically within several hours of shipment. To view report data on same-day shipments, select the new date range option in the dropdown menu labeled “today (so far).” The information downloaded from this option will be continually updated throughout the day.

To learn more, visit the Amazon Fulfilled Shipment Report and Customer Shipment Sales Report Help pages.

Reminder: U.S. Clothing Pick & Pack Fee Changes Effective May 29

Effective May 29, 2014, the Pick & Pack Fee for Clothing products (but not certain accessories such as wallets and belts) and Clothing in other categories, such as Sports & Outdoors, will increase by $0.40 per unit in the U.S.

Greetings from Fulfillment by Amazon

Commerce doesn’t stand still, and neither should your fulfillment and customer support solutions. In this edition, we highlight how Amazon is constantly evolving, from providing close-to-real-time shipments data updates to smoothing the path to a whole new world of Amazon customers in other countries. Improvements such as expanded Same-Day Delivery and the #AmazonCart feature for Twitter enhance the Amazon experience for our customers, but they help our sellers grow, too. Read on for the latest ways in which we’re striving to improve Fulfillment by Amazon for you.

Amazon Features Sellers for National Small Business Week

To celebrate National Small Business Week in the U.S., Amazon’s 2014 Small Business Showcase highlights five of our sellers and their stories—including one seller, Todd Henley, who credits Fulfillment by Amazon for helping his business “gain a loyal following of repeat buyers on Amazon.”

A New Resource for Sellers Eyeing International Expansion

Online commerce is booming across the pond. According to recent data from the European Multi-channel and Online Trade Association, online sales in Europe are growing fast. Amazon has marketplaces in key countries in Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

Amazon Global Selling

To help you tap into these and other growing business opportunities abroad, we've just launched a resource that will help you get started today: a comprehensive site on selling on Amazon’s other marketplaces around the world.

The site covers many of the top questions that sellers raise about selling internationally with Amazon, so it’s the next best thing to having an experienced seller walk you through many of the steps and decision points, including:

  • Which online marketplaces does Amazon operate? What’s the process for actually registering to sell on these Amazon sites?
  • What are some key tax and regulatory considerations when expanding internationally?
  • Can I sell successfully to customers if I’m not fluent in the local language?
  • What are the various ways I can get inventory to customers overseas? What am I responsible for in the import process?
  • How do I get paid when the transactions are in another country’s currency?

Check out Amazon Global Selling’s comprehensive guide to selling internationally now and explore a whole new world of Amazon customers.

Let Your Customers Add Products Directly from Twitter with #AmazonCart

Amazon’s new feature, #AmazonCart, allows you to promote Amazon listings on Twitter and help drive sales. Customers can add products they see on Twitter to their Amazon.com Shopping Carts without leaving Twitter.

Amazon and Twitter

#AmazonCart is a fun way to engage your customers and help increase your sales conversion, as customers who reply with #AmazonCart in response to your tweet will be one step closer to purchasing.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Promote one of your products with a tweet that includes a link to the product’s detail page on Amazon.com. In your tweet, encourage customers to “reply w/ #AmazonCart to add it.” (In the link, append /?m= followed by your alphanumeric Amazon storefront ID to ensure that customers get the product from you. If you use bit.ly to shorten links to the detail page, the #AmazonCart feature will still work.)
  2. Customers add the product directly to their Amazon.com Shopping Carts simply by replying to the tweet and including the hashtag “#AmazonCart.”
  3. Customers receive a reply tweet and an email confirming the addition to their Shopping Carts, and they can complete checkout on Amazon.com at their convenience.

Visit www.amazon.com/AmazonCart for more details.

Amazon Same-Day Delivery Expanded in U.S.

More customers can now shop on Amazon and get their orders delivered the same day. Amazon Same-Day Delivery is only available on products sold by Amazon or sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon—similar to eligibility for expedited Prime shipping options—so more Same-Day Delivery opportunities for customers can mean more sales opportunities for your business. On April 30, Same-Day Delivery was expanded to eligible zip codes in 12 U.S. cities, now including San Francisco and Dallas.

In addition to the city expansion, Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery service has been updated with some new features:

  • Prime members can add unlimited items to a Same-Day Delivery order for a flat $5.99 delivery fee for the shipment.
  • New “Get it today” and “Get it by tomorrow” search filters allow customers browsing Amazon.com in a growing list of cities to narrow down results to just those offers with same-day or next-day delivery options.
  • Order cutoff times for same-day delivery were extended in cities with existing same-day service. Customers in 5 of the 12 cities can order as late as noon (or later, in some cases) and receive delivery by 9 pm the same day.

Popular items available for same-day delivery include many new releases in movies and video games, hot electronics and accessories, products for last-minute travel needs, supplies for completing school or work projects, and family necessities from baby wipes to detergent.

Item eligibility for Same-Day Delivery is determined based on a number of factors, including customers’ preferences and the availability of inventory close to customers.

Read more about Amazon Same-Day Delivery and qualifying cities.

“E-Commerce-Ready”: What It Is and Why It Matters

In our FBA guidelines about preparing shipments to Amazon fulfillment centers, we sometimes say that your inventory should be “e-commerce ready.”

Making your inventory “e-commerce ready” means each of your units meets requirements that ensure it will remain safe, secure, and easily identifiable through the entire fulfillment cycle—not only in transit from you or your supplier’s warehouse to our fulfillment centers, but also through the receiving process, storage of your inventory in the fulfillment centers, and the pick, pack, and shipping process to the buying customer.

Though some FBA prep guidelines help us meet goals such as ensuring Amazon associate safety, our inventory requirements exist to help ensure the best customer experience. The ultimate goal of e-commerce-ready is maximizing the chance that customers receive your products quickly and without damage. Products that are e-commerce ready are received at our fulfillment centers faster than products that are not, and products that we discover to need prep upon receiving may be flagged as a problem shipment on your Inbound Performance report.

To see what goes into sending e-commerce-ready inventory, review Amazon’s Inventory Requirements, including Packaging and Prep Requirements and Product Label Requirements. To help make your units e-commerce-ready, you can purchase Amazon Preferred Product Prep & Shipping Supplies and have polybags, boxes, stretch wrap, bubble pack, and more delivered right to your business’ doorstep.

You can also use the FBA Prep Services and the FBA Label Service for a per-unit fee. You package your units so they arrive safely to Amazon’s fulfillment centers, and Amazon preps your units to be e-commerce ready for customers. To opt into these services, simply choose “Amazon” in the “who preps” and “who labels” steps of the Shipment Creation Workflow.
