Amazon FBA Newsletter

January 2015 Newsletter

Greetings from Fulfillment by Amazon

Thank you for being a part of Fulfillment by Amazon in 2015!

FBA units shipped worldwide increased more than 50 percent year-over-year during the 2014 holiday season. This capped a banner year in which the FBA-seller family grew more than 65 percent worldwide, compared with 2013.

The new year brings plenty of opportunities for FBA sellers to take advantage of Amazon's fulfillment network, customer service, and other benefits. Here's a look at a few key items to keep in mind this month.

Holiday Returns Window Continues Through January 31

For some of your customers, January is prime time to return those holiday gifts that weren't quite the right fit.

Customers who return FBA items shipped by Amazon between November 1 and December 31, 2014, may receive a full refund until January 31, 2015, according to Amazon's Returns Policies.

When you sell a product with FBA, Amazon's Returns Policies determine if the item is eligible for return. Typically, the returns window for an item is 30 days. During the holidays, the returns window is extended.

To learn more about customer returns on FBA orders, visit the Customer Returns for Orders Placed on Amazon help page.

What Will Your FBA Fees Be After February 18?

As announced in December, FBA will soon be adjusting rates in the U.S. to reflect the changing costs of fulfillment, transportation, and customer service and to align with announced changes to industry standards. On February 18, 2015, Pick & Pack and Weight Handling fees will be changing, as will the way we calculate Dimensional Weight. Monthly Inventory Storage Fees will be changing effective March 1, 2015.

Now is a great time to compare fulfillment fees using current rates and to preview what they will be after the fee changes take effect. You can do so by entering information for any product into the FBA Revenue Calculator.

You can estimate your current and future fulfillment fees for products currently in your FBA inventory by viewing or downloading the Fee Preview report (sign-in required).

Visit the Fee Preview report help page for more information.

Is Your Inventory Ready for 'Holiday Halo' Sales?

While sales may slow after the holidays, experienced sellers know that January can be a strong revenue month. Consumers looking for post-holiday deals and cashing in on gift cards they received are two big reasons. Credit card comparison website CardHub has reported that Amazon gift cards were the second most popular gift cards of 2014, surpassed only by the Visa gift card, which can also be used on Amazon.

Keeping a close eye on your inventory levels is as important as ever to avoid missed sales opportunities from customers with gift cards in hand—and also with Valentine's Day around the corner. Here's how to ensure you have the right amount of inventory in stock:

  • Adjust your projections. If you've been selling on Amazon for at least a year, review your past sales and trajectory to project your likely sales for the beginning of 2015. Access a wealth of analytics to view or download in your Business Reports (sign-in required).

  • Allow time for shipping and receiving. Don't cut replenishments so close to the wire that one unexpected winter storm may derail your ability to sell. When sending shipments to Amazon, build in time for carrier delivery and receiving activities at our fulfillment centers.

  • Subscribe to alerts. Sellers with Professional accounts can receive inventory-replenishment recommendations through Amazon Selling Coach in Business Reports. You can adjust your Amazon Selling Coach preferences in Seller Central.

To shore up your FBA inventory, go to your Manage Inventory or Manage FBA Inventory page (sign-in required), check the boxes next to the items you'd like to replenish, select "Send/Replenish Inventory" in the dropdown menu, and then click Go.

Adjust Your Inventory Before the Long-Term Storage Fee Assessment

The biannual FBA Long-Term Storage Fee will be assessed on February 15, 2015. This affects U.S. and Canadian sellers with units that have been in an Amazon fulfillment center for 365 days or more as of February 15.

If you'd like to assess your inventory levels before February, you have a few options:

  • Automatically remove your aged inventory using Automated Long-Term Storage Removals. You can enable or change this service in your Seller Central settings; choose Fulfillment by Amazon in the dropdown menu.

  • See your affected inventory in the Recommended Removal Report (sign-in required). This report lists the units that you need to sell or remove to avoid Long-Term Storage Fee charges on February 15, 2015.

  • View your overall inventory status using the Inventory Health Report (sign-in required). This report will provide the status of your entire inventory in Amazon fulfillment centers. If you don't wish to submit a Removal Order for overstock inventory, you may want to consider changing your price on these units so that they sell before the Long-Term Storage Fee assessment.

Please note: As of the August 15, 2015, fee assessment, inventory that has been in an Amazon fulfillment center in the U.S. for six to 12 months will also be subject to a Long-Term Storage Fee, as announced in December. This is in addition to the August 15 and February 15 fee assessments for units that have been in fulfillment centers for 365 days or more. For more information on the 2015 U.S. FBA fee changes, please visit http://www.amazon.com/fba-fee-changes.
