The Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund, or the Rowe Fund, is an educational loan program of the Organization of American States (OAS). The Rowe Fund helps citizens from Latin America and the Caribbean OAS Member countries finance their studies or research in accredited universities across the U.S. by awarding interest-free loans for up to $15,000 dollars. These loans are granted on the understanding that recipients agree to repay the loan in full and return to their home countries to apply their knowledge and training, as well as continue to promote cultural exchange and development in the region. International Collaboration in Chemistry between U.S. Investigators and their Counterparts Abroad
The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities between U.S. and foreign investigators. NSF Chemistry will accept collaborative research proposals in chemistry, written in English, which establish new bilateral collaborations between U.S. investigators and investigators from Germany, Austria, United Kingdom, China, France, Japan, Russia, Poland, Luxembourg or Spain.

P&G Children's Safe Drinking Water

Almost one billion people in the developing world do not have access to clean drinking water. To address this critical need, Procter & Gamble created water purification packets that are easily transportable and very inexpensive. As part of its International Year of Chemistry observance, ACS initiated a “Pennies for PUR” campaign to raise money for this life-saving
advance made possible by chemistry. Dr. Greg Allgood, who directs P&G’s Children’s Safe Drinking Water program said, “The nearly $18,000 contributed by ACS members and friends will support 800 days of clean water.” To learn more or make a personal gift, visit www.csdw.org.

ACS GCI Green Chem–A–Thon

As part of recent Earth Day celebrations, the first ACS GCI Green Chem-A-Thon used the ACS Network where students responded to the question: “What can green chemistry do to help mother Earth become less toxic and more sustainable by utilizing the 12 principles of green chemistry?” The ACS GCI International Student Chapter in Puerto Rico was particularly active providing numerous responses to the question. We hope to expand this event in the future to involve more students around the globe and use social media to discuss global issues and have their voice heard.

14th Annual L'oreal-UNESCO Awards

Each year, five outstanding women scientists – one per continent – are honored for the contributions of their research, the strength of their commitment,s and their impact on society. An international network of nearly 1,000 scientists nominates the candidates for each year’s awards. The five Laureates are then selected by an independent, international Jury, presided this year by Pr. Günter Blobel, Nobel Prize in Medicine 1999. Visit 14th Annual L'oreal-UNESCO Awards for more details.
