Where's your Target? Many authors feel quite strongly that their book is for everyone. They believe their wisdom will benefit the masses, and they don't consider buyer demographic or likelihood to purchase. This is a common problem when the focus is on selling, and wanting to sell books in as little time as possible. Unfortunately, this big umbrella thinking actually lengthens the selling process. Yes, I know that there are books with broad appeal, and that there can be a widespread audience for a given title. But, the smart publisher will identify the low lying fruit, i.e., who will be the first to purchase this book. This will be the publisher's primary market, and most of the marketing and promotion should be designed to appeal to them. Let's say you have written a young adult title - teen vampire fiction, for instance. Your cover design is your first-line marketing effort. You will want the cover to appeal to teen and twenty-something girls. They';re the group that';s buying the majority of these titles, and they're your primary market. You could argue that young readers (especially those with advanced reading skills), and young men are also reading vampire fiction. And, you'd be correct. But if you vary your marketing programs to include these groups as well, you will dilute your impact, and your sales will likely slow. Focus your energy on your primary market. The buzz will reverberate among the teens, the other groups will take notice, and ultimately they will look for and find you!
