EL-ARISH, Egypt Armed Bedouin tribesmen briefly abducted a Hungarian member
of the multinational observer force in Sinai, releasing him around two hours
later after tribal elders intervened, a security official said Thursday. An
official with the force confirmed the kidnapping of the Hungarian who was
traveling Thursday in a bus from el-Arish in north Sinai to Cairo,
a regular trip members of the force make to the capital. The two
officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized
to speak to the media. The security official said the elders secured the
release of the force member by mediating between the tribesman and the
government. The kidnappers were demanding the release of a member of their
tribe arrested earlier on drug-related charges. The official said authorities
promised they would review the case of the arrested tribesman, but that
they have not released him.It is rare that members of the 12-nation
force stationed in the Sinai are abducted by local tribesmen, although they
have attacked the force's buses and headquarters. The largest contingent
in the Sinai force is American.Bedouin tribesmen often briefly hold tourists
to pressure the government in negotiations over the release of imprisoned
relatives. The clans in Sinai have long complained of discrimination by the
state, and mass arrests in the area after bombings in 2004 and
2005 only further poisoned relations between residents and authorities.
Inves
e effort.Gun control advocates
still face opposition from many Republican senators and resistance from
moderate Democrats, including several facing re-election next year in GOP-leaning
states. In the Republican-run House, leaders have shown little enthusiasm
for Obama's ideas, making that chamber an even higher hurdle.Under the agreement
the two senators announced at the Capitol, background checks would be expanded
to all for-profit transactions including sales at gun shows and online,
with records kept by licensed gun-dealers who would handle the paperwork.
Exempted would be noncommercial transactions such as between relatives.
Currently, the system applies only to sales by the country's 55,000 federally
licensed firearms dealers. The agreement also contains provisions expanding
firearms rights, and that concerns gun control supporters. Some restrictions
on transporting guns across state lines would be eased, sellers would be
shielded from lawsuits if the buyer passed a check but later used
a firearm in a crime and gun dealers could conduct business in
states where they don't live."Truly the events at Newtown changed us all,"
said Manchin, citing the Connecticut town where December's murders of 20
first-graders and six educators propelled gun control to the top rank of
national issues. "Americans on both sides of the debate can and must
find common ground."Emotion, always prominent in the gun issue, cropped
up late Wednesday when Manchi

be too jarring -- but an increasing number are accepting it for
payment. Gallippi's company, BitPay, handles Bitcoin transactions for some
4,500 companies, taking payments in bitcoins and forwarding the cash equivalent
to the vendor involved, which means that his clients are insulated from
the cybercurrency's volatility.Gallippi said many of the businesses are
e-commerce websites, but he said an increasing number of traditional retailers
were looking to get into the game as well."We just had an
auto dealership in Kansas City apply," he said.In March, BitPay said its
vendors had done a record $5.2 million in bitcoin sales -- well
ahead of the $1.2 million's worth of monthly revenue estimated to have
coursed through Silk Road last year.Even artists accept bitcoins. Tehran-based
music producer Mohammad Rafigh said the currency had allowed him to sell
his albums "all over the world and not only in Iran."Gallippi said
the cybercurrency's ease of access was its biggest selling point. With Bitcoin,
"I can access my money from any computing device at any time
and do whatever the heck I want with it," he said. "Once
you move your money into the cloud why would you ever go
back to putting your money in the bank?"Many Wall Street veterans are
skeptical -- and they may feel vindicated after Bitcoin's latest tumble."Trading

are in deep here," he said. "The police rob as much as
the drug addicts."___Housing is a major problem, and has been a government
priority.An estimated 2 million of Venezuela's country's nearly 30 million
people lack permanent homes, and one of Chavez's anti-poverty "missions"
builds them. But it's been slow going. The government says it has built
370,500 homes and apartments over the past two years, and more than
3 million people applied for them.In the city of Guacara, a stop
between Maracay and Valencia on the unfinished rail line, about 100 women
invaded a fenced-in vacant lot beside a Pirelli tire factory last weekend.Police
cordoned off the lot and, two days later, weren't letting in food
or water to the women, who shielded themselves from the sun under
sheets strung across the limbs of bushes."They give houses to their families
and closest friends," one woman complained about government supporters before
police shooed a reporter away.Sisters Diana, 26, and Laura Rojas, 19, had
joined the squatters but gave up.Single mothers, both yearn for their own
homes. Laura lives cramped with her mother. Diana is tired of putting
most of her earnings from selling bed linens on the street into
a single, rented room."If you don't invade, you don't get your own
home," said Diana, who voted for Chavez in October but wasn't sure
