I wish to incorporate the language of Lojban as a literary element in this project. What makes my project unique is that I intend to release not only a novel, but a completely open source literary setting that anyone may profitably work from. To my knowledge this is unprecedented, which is my reason for contacting you before incorporating Lojban. The novel is set in the far post apocalypse, far enough that said apocalypse is a historical event rather than the engine that drives the plot. The novel and setting looks at the many changes that could result from the total rebuilding of society, and one of those elements is a tribal culture called the Magi. The Magi are a forward thinking people with a universal fixation on useful knowledge and applying technology in new ways. The Magi would use Lojban as their primary tongue. I originally intended to use Latin, but it does not make sense for a forward thinking culture to embrace a dead language. The setting would be released with a license that allows derivative work to be created from its content, which would include necessarily include the Magic usage of Lojban. What I need to know is whether the language is copyrighted or otherwise licensed in a way that would prevent this, and if so, could there be an arrangement to circumvent this? I hope to hear back from you soon. -Ian L. Zoltai
