I went with their recommended bean as a starting point. Started with recommended Vario setting (per Baratza web site) of 2Q (ended up settled at 1M by the end of my session) - grind time is 9.2 seconds. - doing long hx fluxh after initial start and long breaks, and 5 second flush after short breaks seems ok (at least to start); in anticipation of my first session I was most worked up on this variable, but my undeveloped pallet can't tell a difference from flush / brew temp that I can discern. - Right now my grind is about 15g, and yields a bit over 2oz in 25 seconds. I need to youtube more, because I'm not sure of the shade of brown that is considered blonding; and rules of thums are tips on this?. The 2oz measurement is a bit subjective, the top is a bit foamy. - I started with 4oz in about 10 seconds, and went across the spectrum to 1oz in 30 seconds, so spent a lot of time on grinder settings (fineness of grind, and timing). - Question - There is no way I'll be able to eye-ball the grind until I take a class (will be pretty soon). My eye's aren't even that good. I'm simply playing with grind finesse, and timer, to obtain around 14-16 grams; and adjusting quantity (time) or grind to modify shot volume over a fixed time of 25 seconds. Is this a reasonable approach? when I get past 25 seconds the brown gets pretty light... (blond?). To me, my end product taste good (again, my pallet is not well refined); my wife likes her drink; I'm at least sort of in range I think... I fully expect at some time in the future I will look back on these shots as terrible, but for now most of my experiments that were 2-2.5 oz in 20-30 seconds seemed ok; the one's outside of this were notably off. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
