Here is what is written on the web site regarding the qualifications for = membership. > According to the bylaws, "persons may be named members upon recommendatio= n for membership by any member and by election by a majority of all the mem= bers of the Corporation, in person or by proxy." > The bylaws specify the following qualifications: > > competence in fields including linguistics, psychology, philosophy, l= ogic, mathematics, computer science, anthropology, sociology, education, an= d human biology > high personal dedication to the purposes of The Logical Language Grou= p as specified in the bylaws > > At the 2011 annual meeting, lojbab proposed the following criteria by whi= ch prospective members may be deemed eligible to join the organization as v= oting members: > > Working on a project for an extended period of time, especially one r= equiring coordination with other lojbanists > Assumption of responsibility for non-language chores, such as web sit= e maintenance > Activity promoting lojban or recruiting lojbanists, such as presentin= g or teaching the language > Being familiar with the bylaws, and taking the initiative to ask for = membership at a meeting > Participating in a meeting as a non-voting member For many years, merely showing up at a meeting was enough to warrant = inviting someone to become a member. But then we had a period where = people would show up at a meeting, become a member, and then lose = interest/activity over the following year. We got to the point where we = had trouble achieving quorum at meetings. We then went to the opposite = extreme, and dissuaded people from becoming members UNLESS they were = explicitly interested in the organizational or business aspects of the = language community. For the most part, it was presumed that language = design decisions would be made by the BPFK or some successor thereof. Language skill is not required, though welcomed. A movement towards = requiring such competency and/or conducting meetings at least partially = in Lojban appeared and then died before the following meeting. Robin = Powell, who was one of the leaders of that movement, can speak as to the = reasons he has since changed his mind. The following are non-members who have reported as being present at the = meeting. If asterisked, then I know them to have previously expressed = interest in becoming a voting member of LLG. *Jacob Errington (tsani) *Alex Burka (durka) *Riley Martinez-Lynch (mukti) *Mitsuko Wate (guskant) Ozymandias Haynes (az) *Miles Forster (selpa'i) *Adam Lopresto (xalbo) Andrew Browne (dersaidin) Sylvain D=E9jardin (ilmen) *Arkadii Balandin (gleki) Any of those without an asterisk who now wish to become members should = indicate their desire *now*. Anyone, member or non-member may nominate = someone not present to be invited into membership. If they respond = quickly and join the meeting, the invitees also can become members, = though commonly they are provisional until contacted after the meeting, = and don't assume formal membership until the following year. ---------------------------------------- I will now hear motions to nominate any/all of the asterisked attendees = to become members, or separate motions to nominate anyone else. Any = such motion may be seconded without waiting for my acknowledgement. I = will allow at least until the end of the day Friday (2359 UT 12/12) for = such motions. Debate on any nomination is in order after it is seconded. lojbab _______________________________________________ Llg-members mailing list Llg-members@lojban.org http://mail.lojban.org/mailman/listinfo/llg-members
