The next order of business is the proposal of any new members, which =

takes place prior to the election of the Board of Directors.

Here is what is written on the web site regarding the qualifications for =

membership.

> According to the bylaws, "persons may be named members upon recommendatio=
n for membership by any member and by election by a majority of all the mem=
bers of the Corporation, in person or by proxy."
> The bylaws specify the following qualifications:

For many years, merely showing up at a meeting was enough to warrant =

inviting someone to become a member.  But then we had a period where =

people would show up at a meeting, become a member, and then lose =

interest/activity over the following year.  We got to the point where we =

had trouble achieving quorum at meetings.  We then went to the opposite =

extreme, and dissuaded people from becoming members UNLESS they were =

explicitly interested in the organizational or business aspects of the =

language community.  For the most part, it was presumed that language =

design decisions would be made by the BPFK or some successor thereof.

Language skill is not required, though welcomed.  A movement towards =

requiring such competency and/or conducting meetings at least partially =

in Lojban appeared and then died before the following meeting.  Robin =

Powell, who was one of the leaders of that movement, can speak as to the =

reasons he has since changed his mind.

The following are non-members who have reported as being present at the =

meeting.  If asterisked, then I know them to have previously expressed =

interest in becoming a voting member of LLG.

Any of those without an asterisk who now wish to become members should =

indicate their desire *now*.  Anyone, member or non-member may nominate =

someone not present to be invited into membership.  If they respond =

quickly and join the meeting, the invitees also can become members, =

though commonly they are provisional until contacted after the meeting, =

and don't assume formal membership until the following year.

I will now hear motions to nominate any/all of the asterisked attendees =

to become members, or separate motions to nominate anyone else.  Any =

such motion may be seconded without waiting for my acknowledgement.  I =

will allow at least until the end of the day Friday (2359 UT 12/12) for =

such motions.

Debate on any nomination is in order after it is seconded.
