I was walking around my neighborhood. It was a nice, sunny June day, and I =
was excited to get out and get some fresh air after all the spring rain. I?=
ve always loved summer- the endless green, the shining sun, the warmth on m=
y skin, the t-shirts and shorts and sneakers, and no bad weather to get in =

I was determined to use the stroll as an opportunity to refresh my brain an=
d get inspired by the time I headed home, so I walked slowly and stopped at=

ople talking behind me. Not really loudly, but I could make out some snippe=
ts of what they were saying:

ria, and standing next to him was the weird kid with the bright pink hair a=

Jaden!? He waved while the kid next to him just continued staring at me.=20
I squinted at them. ?Do you two need something from me?? I couldn?t say I w=
as exactly excited to see Avery. He was one of the kids I?m excited to get =
away from every summer- it just seems like he never stops talking. Does he =

When he swung the door open, I pushed past Avery to investigate, and I was =
stunned to find a genuinely cool-looking set; lots of hand painted and hand=
crafted stuff with obvious care put into it.=20

?Y-yeah?? He smiled awkwardly. ?What did you expect??

I?d worked with him on a group project once, so what I expected was a half-=
done and sloppy job. ?I dunno,? I said instead. ?It?s just impressive.?

Avery seemed to brighten up, a huge smile on his face. Meanwhile, Jaymin nu=
dged me and said, ?You should put on your costume so you can test out the s=
cript with Avery.? Then he handed me a bundle of clothes.=20
I nodded politely and headed off to change in the bathroom. On my way out, =
I spotted a spare script on a countertop, so I grabbed that so I could memo=
rize it while I changed. By the time I was back, Avery had changed into a d=
arker version of my costume, and Jaymin had settled into a bean bag chair t=

Jaymin glanced at me and gave a big thumb?s up. Avery grinned, ?That looks =
awesome!?

I started to thank him but then paused. ?Is that a? hook?? I grimaced.=20
He laughed. ?Totally! Cool, right?? He dropped into what I?m sure he though=

Jaymin nodded, but just as I prepared to say my first line, he stopped me. =

s. ?Props. You both have to insert them in the treasure chest?s lock at the=
 end of the script.?

I remembered that from the script. We both took the keys and went through t=
he script normally- I was impressed but not surprised by how good an actor =
Avery was, since he seems like the type. I?m not sure I did particularly we=
ll, though, but I?d never even tried acting before, so it was easy to not b=
eat myself up about it.=20
Anyway, the important part of all this is when Avery and I reached the end =
of the script. Avery grinned and cried, ?Look, captain- it?s the treasure w=
e?ve been looking for!?

I smiled calmly. ?At last. We could buy enough food with this gold to feed =
every one of our families for months.? I reached into my satchell, where I =
had stashed my key, and Avery did the same. ?These keys must unlock the che=
st.?

Together, we inserted the keys into the lock?s hole. For a second, nothing =
really happened- not even the chest?s lid popping open. But in that split s=
econd, I think both Avery and I knew that something weird was about to happ=
en, and sure enough, all of a sudden it was like we were falling through a =
pit empty nothing with the destination of who knows where. Someone screamed=
, and I have no idea which one of us it was. Jaymin was nowhere to be seen.=

Finally, we hit ground- wooden, unstable ground. Avery rolled over and moan=
ed while I stood up and tried to regain myself. I looked around and saw tha=
t we were on? a boat? It was bobbing gently on clear blue waves, and I even=
 spotted a couple of men swabbing the deck.=20
Suddenly the two of them notice me. One bows deeply, and the other smiles a=
nd calls out, ?Aye, Captain!? He leaned against his broom. ?What are you do=
ing here??

?Captain?? I echoed stupidly, as Avery sat up and nudged me.=20
?Did he just call you captain?? He hissed. I couldn?t explain it, but there=
 was something? excited in his eyes. I nodded, and he grabbed me by my slee=
ve and yanked me towards him. ?Rowan. Rowan, dude- something happened in Ja=
ymin?s movie and now-? his grin was wild- ?Now we?re inside it.?

Before I could respond, Avery jumped to his feet. ?I?m gonna go ask what th=
e name of the boat is.?

I followed him, and we headed over to the man with the broom. ?Ahoy, matey!=

He blinked, visibly puzzled. ?The Key of the Sea, sir.? He spoke slowly but=

Avery and I were quiet. Our eyes were locked on the waves.=20
?We?ve been here for two months,? I muttered.=20
Avery nodded. ?It?s all that kid Jaymin?s fault.? He glared at the water. ?=
I can?t believe I ever thought this would be cool.?

I took a breath. ?We?re still going to find the keys. It?s just taking a wh=
ile. They?re probably in a temple on an island or something.?

?I guess.?

I was silent for a minute. It was hard to say, but I think he needed to hea=
r it, so I cleared my throat and said, ?I know things have been kind of wei=
rd, and I can be kind of rude, but I don?t hate you or anything. Just for t=
he record.?

He turned to look at me, and I think he was trying not to look surprised, b=
ut his eyes had widened just a bit. Then he chuckled. ?I guess it?s kinda m=
y fault we?re on this boat,? he admitted. ?Since, like, I?m the one who got=
 us involved with that movie. Do you think he knew that the keys were, like=
, magic or something??

?I don?t think it really matters.? I watched a seagull fly across the horiz=
on; it looked like it was glowing under the moonlight. ?But I thought I?d m=
ention that even though we?re not best friends or anything, I?m glad that w=
e?re trying to find them together.?

?Same. You?re pretty clever.? He paused. ?But if we?re not best friends, wh=
at do you think we are??

I raised my eyebrows, surprised. ?I guess I haven?t really thought about it=
? maybe just family??

He laughed. ?Were not best friends, but we are family??

I rested my elbow on the rim and my chin in my palm. ?I dunno. I guess that=
 when you?re siblings, it?s like? you?re not 100% friends, but you can trus=
t each other, and you?re close.?

He smiled. ?That makes sense. I feel the same way.? He flashed me a peace s=
ign. ?I guess I?m heading back to bed. Hope you can sleep.? Then he ran off=

I watched him go thoughtfully. I?d never really known him until this except=
 as an annoying chatterbox at school- not to mention a slacker. But now tha=
t I?ve gotten to know him a bit better, I can see the reason most of our cl=
assmates seem to like him. He?s actually pretty funny and clever, and appar=
ently hardworking when he feels the need to apply himself. And maybe someda=
y I could call him a friend.=20

t?s the connection between Ebraxas and Venery.? He noticed we didn?t unders=
tand what he was saying and explained himself. ?The sellers go all around T=
allis collecting kids from the States to sale overseas as slaves. They come=
 from Briony State through Venery until they reach Cianna and come back to =
Venery with the ?merchandise?.? He made a pause to take out his map. ?They =
usually kidnap kids from rich families to ask for a rescue fee even though =
they never return the children. I guess that?s what happened to you two, hu=
h?.? We looked nod while he scans his map. ?Where are you guys from?? He ma=
rks a route in the map after telling him we come from Cianna. ?Here?s what =
we?ll do, we?ll go through the woods until we reach the outskirts of Ebraxa=
s, from there I?ll take you to the twin city?s capital. I can only go that =
far, the rest of the trip you?ll have to make it alone.? He showed us his m=
ap pointing at our location and showing us the path we?ll be taking. I had =
never seen the Orioch State nor the Venery State, that?s why I?ve never hea=
rd the name Aerowyn. ?I thought Orioch and Venery were just myths.? ?Well n=
ow you know they are very real.? He said rolling his map and walking to the=
 door. ?People don?t talk about these places because they are dangerous. Ge=
t ready, we?ll be out in an hour.? Once he leaves we pack the few things we=
 have. ?You are very quiet today.? ?Don?t talk as if we were close.? Thomas=
 answered me harshly. ?We are together in this, no need to be so hostile.? =
We finished packing in an awkward silence, then headed outside where Owen w=
as waiting for us with some horses. He helped us up and we began our journe=
y through the thick woods that surround Aerowyn. After a few hours of ridin=
g, we found a small river and decided to let the horses rest. We were getti=
ng ready to continue when we heard quick gallops in the distance. Owen guid=
ed the horses silently to some tall bushes. The gallops got closer and clos=
er until we could see them clearly. I recognized them as the kidnappers and=
 told Owen right away. ?They are probably looking for you two. This is not =
good; we have to take a detour through Venery, it?s our only option now.? W=
e waited for the kidnapers to go far enough that we couldn?t be heard. We h=
oped on the horses, now on our way to Venery. Owen decided that it was bett=
er to go fast to not loose sunlight nor risk the kidnappers coming back. Th=
at night while Thomas slept I asked Owen how did the kidnappers got out of =
Briony, which had a strong border. He told me that they had an underground =
tunnel to Venery, which they use to transport children from the inside befo=
re going to look out for more around Tallis. The next day we got to the bor=
der of Venery. It was very protected, that?s why the kidnapers preferred to=
 go through Orioch instead of going straight from Ebraxas to Venery. Owen k=
new someone who helped us through. That night we slept in the outskirts of =
Ebraxas, close to the border of Aonaran, the twin city of Adiscon. Owen wok=
e us up in the middle of the night. ?We have to move, now. The kidnappers a=
re close; I?ll leave you as close as I can to Azura.? By dawn we were in Il=
ya, the town before Azura, with the kidnapers hot on our heels. ?Keep a low=
 profile and stick together. I?ll take the horses and try to distract them =
for as long as I can; you are on your own now.? He gave us his map, indicat=
ing us where to go, before galloping away back to Ebraxas. We spent the res=
t of the day looking all over town for a place to sleep and eat that night =
without much luck. ?Milo look, this house looks abandoned, maybe we can spe=
nd the night here.? Said Thomas pointing at a small cabin. According to the=
 map we were close enough to Azura that it will only take us half a day to =
get there. We went to bed that night, hungry and restless. ?Milo, Milo. Ple=
ase wake up, I think they found us, we have to move.? Whispered Thomas shak=
ing my shoulder. ?I think it?s almost dawn and I heard some men looking for=
 two kids when I went for a walk just a moment ago.? We rapidly picked out =
things and. ?I think we should go to the next city before going to Azura, w=
e might lose them that way. We were getting ready to move when we hear voic=
es outside. ?I found them!? shouted one of them the moment he saw us. We he=
ar another one scream ?Catch them!? as we run with all our might. We can he=
ar their footsteps fading. I pull Thomas to the first alley I see and we st=
ay there until the kidnappers pass by without seeing us. After a minute we =
spot an old man in a hay cart. We ask him if he was going to Azura, and he =
kindly offered to take us. We could finally rest for some hours in the hay.=
 It was noon already when the old man woke us up telling us that we reached=
 the outskirts of Azura. We thanked him and asked him where could we take a=
 train to Cianna. ?The only train that goes to Cianna is on the other side =
of town, almost in Adiscon, but the last train leaves at four so you better=
 hurry if you want to get there today.? ?I don?t think we can make it today=
; we better go as far as we can and stay in Azura for the night.? I said to=
 Thomas when the man left. We walked in the shadows, making sure to lose th=
e kidnappers every time we saw them, until we got to a small farm. We waite=
d for night to sneak into its barn. Earlier we had stolen some bread which =
we had for dinner. Leaving my things with Thomas, I went out and grabbed so=
me apples from a close tree for our breakfast. Just as I was going to get o=
ff the tree, I saw horses close by, the kidnaper?s faces illuminated by the=
ir lanterns as they galloped closer and closer. I got down as fast as I cou=
ld and went inside the barn through a back door. I woke up Thomas, who had =
fallen asleep in a stack of hay. ?They are hot on our track; we have to mov=
e now. We?ll travel all night and by noon we should be at the train station=
? We picked up our things and went out the back door, closing it silently =
behind us. ?Let?s hide here until we lose them.? I said pulling him toward =
some bushes. It didn?t take long for them to go away. We ran for no more th=
an one hour. We catch our breath for a few minutes and decide to keep runni=
ng despite our tiredness. The road was long, and our bodies couldn?t stand =
it anymore. ?Just as you said we?re almost there.? Said Thomas when we stop=
ped to catch our breath for a moment. I see the kidnappers coming behind us=
, although they don?t seem to have seen us yet. I pull us to an alley until=
 the kidnappers pass by in their horses. We can hear the train arriving and=
 under the noise I catch a glimpse of their conversation. ?They will wait f=
or us until the last train leaves. If they don?t find us they will hopefull=
y head back to the center of the town and search for us again.? ?That means=
 we can?t take the train today?? asks Thomas worried. ?I think we have to a=
t least try since we?ve come this far.? I make a pause to think about our o=
ptions. ?We should hop onto the last wagon when they get distracted.? We wa=
ited for about two hours and finally saw our opportunity. The kidnappers ge=
t off their horses and move them to rest somewhere close. ?It?s now or neve=
r Thomas, let?s do this.? He nods and we both get ready to run as the train=
 is about to leave. We get to the last wagon just as it passes in front of =
the kidnappers. ?Hey! Here they are!? ?We have to catch them quickly!? one =
of them was close enough that he could grab onto the train and hop on. We g=
o inside the wagon and lock it. As we make our way through the almost empty=
 wagons we hear him behind us. ?I?m going to catch you kids!? As we get to =
the middle of the train, we see that the train is approaching a bridge that=
 connects two mountains. ?We are entering Adiscon!? I shout to Thomas while=
 we run. ?How many hours to get to Cianna?? ?I think only two hours, but we=
 have to get rid of him before getting to that bridge!? We are almost at th=
e end of the train now. ?Milo, do you trust me?? ?Why are you asking that n=
ow?!? we get to the end of the train with the kidnapper two wagons away fro=
m us. Thomas looks at me and just when the train is about to get to the bri=
dge he grabs my wrist and jumps, pulling me along. ?Thomas why?!? I manage =
to scream right before hitting the ground and start rolling down the hill. =
We finally come to a stop. Everything hurts and I can hear Thomas grunting.=
 ?I?m sorry, but at least I saved our lives.? He says with a chuckle. ?Bare=
ly! You are absolutely crazy.? I say while I throw my head back to the gras=
s. We stare at the sky, laughing at how crazy all of this is, until we fall=
 sleep. The next morning, we climb up back to town. Luckily, we don?t see t=
he kidnappers, they must think we died from the fall. With some money Owen =
left us we buy train tickets to finally get back home after what feels like=
 years. We sit down, relieved. ?I have changed a lot during this trip, and =
I want to thank you. I realized that the world doesn?t revolve around me an=
d that I should be more grateful. I can?t thank you enough.? I smile ?I don=
?t understand why you think I helped you, but you demonstrated to me that p=
eople can change for good, so I thank you for that, and for saving my life.=
? As we laugh I realize that the person sitting across me, went form almost=
 a stranger to being as close as my family, and he realized that too. We st=
are at the sunset through the window, ready to face any problems we might e=
