JoinCelebrate National Chemistry Week during IYC 2011 with ACS
The chemistry of health and the positive impact of the chemical sciences on the world as it relates to nutrition, hygiene, and medicine will be the final theme of the IYC. The health quarter will be prepared in conjunction with National Chemistry Week (NCW), October 16–22, 2011. Visit www.acs.org/ncw to download the latest issue of “Celebrating Chemistry” in English and Spanish and to get ideas for activities and resources that can be used to support your NCW celebration.

Pennies for PUR™ Water – You Can Help
As part of the IYC 2011 celebration, ACS has launched the "Pennies for PUR™ Water" initiative, to raise funds that will be donated to the Children's Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) program. The CSDW program, sponsored by Procter & Gamble, provides communities in need with PUR™ water-purification sachets (developed by P&G and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) that can purify even heavily contaminated water so that it meets World Health Organization standards for safe drinking water. Through the Pennies for PUR™ Water effort, ACS hopes to raise sufficient funds to be able to provide more than 1.5 million gallons of safe water before the end of 2011 – reaching that goal would be a powerful demonstration of the ACS Vision, "Improving people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry." We are asking all members to participate by raising or donating funds. Visit the Pennies for PUR™ Water web page to find out how you can help.

Santa Rosa Junior College's Chemistry Department Presents:
Elements and Alchemy: Wizard to Scientist
The Santa Rosa Junior College Chemistry Department invites you to discover the "magic" of chemistry across the ages and explore the development of atomic theory. The event, which will be held on Friday, October 28, 7:00-8:00 p.m., in Santa Rosa, California, is funded by a grant from the Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation-Randolph Newman Cultural Enrichment Endowment, and will be presented by Galen George, the 2010 winner of the first ACS California Section Teacher-Scholar Award for Community College Chemistry Faculty. The event is free and open to the public. For additional details and to reserve a seat, contact Katie Parrish.

ThanksACS IYC Partner Program
Is your organization an ACS IYC Partner? If not, consider joining the growing number of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics organizations that have partnered with ACS to promote and celebrate the IYC.  Find out how to participate by visiting our IYC website.

New IYC Partners
We welcome World Water Monitoring Day™ and Penn State Berks, our newest ACS IYC Partners!

IYC Partner Highlight – World Water Monitoring Day™ (WWMD)
WWMD is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. WWMD is officially celebrated on September 18; however, the monitoring window was extended for the first time in 2009 from March 22 (World Water Day) until December 31. The deadline for submitting data to the WWMD database is December 31. The coordinators of WWMD, the Water Environment Federation and the International Water Association plan to expand participation to one million people in 100 countries by 2012. Visit the WWMD website to learn more.

SpreadIYC Dance on YouTube Continues to Attract Attention
Five months after the ACS’s IYC rap and dance debuted at the Anaheim National Meeting, it is still generating positive comments from bloggers and drawing growing numbers of viewers on YouTube. In just one 24-hour period in September, the site spiked more than 3,000 views, topping 16,000 total. The song was commissioned by ACS and written and performed by two members of the 2010 U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Team, Richard Li and Utsarga Sikder. Watch the video and read the latest blogger’s enthusiastic comments at http://io9.com/5840609/the-best-chemistry-geek-anthem-ever.

Chemical & Engineering News Features Essays by Prominent Figures in Chemistry to Commemorate IYC 2011
C&EN asked five prominent figures in the chemistry enterprise to contribute essays about the achievements of chemistry and how chemistry is improving the lives of human beings around the world. The essays examine a few of the many ways chemistry is being harnessed to meet the challenges humanity faces. In his essay, Roger L. Williams, chief executive officer of the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, focuses on quality standards for ensuring the delivery of safe drugs. Visit C&EN to learn more.

ACS IYC Virtual Journal – New Issue Now Available!
We’ve celebrated the International Year of Chemistry (IYC) for nine months, and we’re getting ready to celebrate three more.  The newest issue of the ACS IYC Virtual Journal gets in on the act by highlighting more of the ways that chemistry improves everyday life for people around the world.  Read about harvesting oil from microscopic algae; “super sand” for water purification; the safety of seafood from the Gulf of Mexico; an improved method of testing for cholera; an invisibility cloak material (for all you Harry Potter fans); and the IYC Virtual Journal’s other vignette’s on chemistry. Free access is available to the full text of the selected journal content in the ACS IYC Virtual Journal throughout 2011.

Inspire the Next Generation of Scientists during IYC
A new ACS video series—aptly named Spellbound—tells the stories of eight chemists whose childhood curiosity about everyday things helped them launch careers in laboratories, win Nobel Prizes, and make other notable achievements.  Free and available at www.acs.org/Spellbound, www.youtube.com/ACSVideoTheater , on iTunes and on DVD by request (m_bernstein@acs.org), the videos are suitable for classrooms and other audiences of scientists and non-scientists. Watch them, share them, and encourage educators, museums, science centers, news organizations and others to embed links on their websites.
