I think it depends a lot on the type of text you're translating.
The more literary or poetic the text, the more you will need
to go Lojbanic, especially if you have meter restrictions,
as in song lyrics. In general, I think it's better not to force
things like word order, so for example I would translate
"I gave my friend a book" as {mi dunda lo cukta lo mi pendo},
not even adding a tense marker unless it was important 
in the context. But it's hard to give general rules, you'll just
have to find out what works better for you (and also pay 
attention to how understandable your translations are for 
others).
