There was discussion on a Lojban list some months ago about the Lojban 
translation of 'philosophy'. I don't remember the outcome of the discussion, but I 
wonder if the following is a good definition:

   A philosophy is a set of principles which provides a consistent and 
comprehensive frame of reference from which to judge man and his environment.
