One can be completely fluent in a language despite a noticeable accent, and= =20 having attended a few jbonunsla, I know there's a variety of accents among= =20 Lojban speakers. I know a man from Brazil who came to the US at the age of = 5=20 and learned Spanish as an adult. Spanish and Portuguese are almost identica= l=20 grammatically and share much vocabulary, so it didn't take him long to beco= me=20 fluent; but he often doesn't roll "rr", nasalizes vowels, and sometimes mix= es=20 words in the two languages. My own pronunciation is like this: a, o, s, and t are as in Spanish. (My=20 mother is from El Salvador, so I know a fair bit of Spanish.) r is also as = in=20 Spanish when in any environment that occurs in Spanish, except that Lojban= =20 doesn't distinguish r from rr (Spanish does, but only between vowels), so= =20 in "slari" it may be rolled, but is normally tapped. y is a schwa, and the= =20 vowel in "run" I'd take as y too. The allophone of o is unrounded o, which= =20 isn't in my phoneme inventory. r between consonants or next to x, and x, are a bit more complicated.=20 In "fonxa" I pronounce the n as =C5=8B, and the x as [=C3=A7], resulting in= [f=C9=94=C5=8B=C3=A7a].=20 [=C3=A7] cannot be mistaken for /h/, which occurs only between vowels. rx I= =20 pronounce as two distinct sounds, but xr as a simultaneous uvular-lingual= =20 trill which starts being voiced partway through. (le xruki le ginxre xrixru= ba=20 xu xrula cu xrani?) In the contrived word "rirxrxrazdani" (is a certain riv= er=20 in Armenia), I keep the same simultaneous trill, switching the voice on and= =20 off. Vocalic r in other environments (e.g. fiprgado, but not spatrxapio) I= =20 pronounce pretty much as in English "butterfly". In "spatrxapio" the r come= s=20 out as a single tap (as in Spanish tres) followed by =CA=91 used as a vowel= . The online version of the Book uses characters that don't look like IPA,=20 unless you're using a certain font, which I don't have. Pierre --=20 When a barnacle settles down, its brain disintegrates. J=C3=A1 n=C3=A3o percebe nada, j=C3=A1 n=C3=A3o percebe nada. --=20 You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "= Lojban Beginners" group.
