According to CLL13:13, "kau"

  "marks the word it is attached to as the focus of an indirect question".

"The word" isn't specified to be one of the question words like "ma",
"xu", etc., which is consistent with the usage of other discursives
such as "pe'a" and "ki'a". ".i kau ..." would be as grammatical as ".i
ki'a ...". But neither the CLL nor the BPFK section seems to have an
example of ".i kau ...". The definition above, then, leads me to think
that ".i kau ..." would be one whole sentence being marked as what is
being indirectly questioned. How would that be different from ".i xu
kau ..."?
